Just checked out an interesting flick tonight (you know I love my cheesy 80s horror) called Cellar Dweller. It actually had Jeffrey Combs in it for about five minutes, before being destroyed by a demon-ape-monster-from-hell. Cute flick. Hope they put it out on DVD at some point.

I think MGM holds the rights to this. It was one of the "exclusive" VHS's Amazon, in conjunction with MGM, had for sale some months ago. The Burning, Clownhouse and After Midnight were some of the others so perhaps it'll be in the next batch of Midnite Movies or horror-DVD's they release. Haven't seen it myself but I hear it's decent.

Essentially, a comic book writer illustrates a creature that he inadvertently brings to life with the help of a grimoire. The creature basically gobbles up everyone in a boarding house of sorts. It's low-budget, but not without its charm. It actually reminds me a lot of Tales from the Darkside episodes. But, more interestingly, this movie represents one of those rare instances when the movie is actually less cheesy than the box cover art.

It's a good, somewhat cheesy flick. I picked up the laserdisc (fullframe, looks to be un-matted 1.85) a while ago and enjoyed it, even though I got it primarily for Combs and he's outty after 4 or 5 minutes. Decent, if not obvious, low budget effects. Definitly worth a viewing. I'd trade my LD in for a dvd for sure, nothing extra here, just the film.

Just watched an ancient vhs copy of this one. Really fun movie, i thought i'd only watch it for the monster effects and was expecting to be bored by the story, but found it all enjoyable. Much better than 90% of the high budget movies they churn out all the time. i feel refreshed.

I still have the VHS of Cellar Dweller around somewhere. I probably last watched it a year or two ago. It's a bizarre little film, mostly taking place in an "art school" in the middle of nowhere. It was an Empire Pictures release from Charles Band, and MGM almost definitely holds the rights to the title now. I'd like to see this and other old Empire pictures like Dungeonmaster and Spellcaster come to DVD... even some double feature DVD's would be sweet!

I made a dvdr from the laserdisc and watched it the other day. Definitly fun cheese. A legit dvd would be welcome.

I recall some cool gore as well. It's been ages since I saw this though ... a DVD would be more then welcomed.
I recall seeing this on the old rental shelves.... picture of a cellar staircase... a set of legs walking down... and a big giant hairy clawed monster hand reaching from between the steps grabbing at the feet! SCARY! :)
