Just bought the Monster Squad laserdisc. Love this movie...can't wait to see it again and review it. The rights are owned to Columbia Tri-Star; we definitely need to let them know there is a demand to have Monster Squad released to DVD.

Anyone else own this LD? I'd like to hear thoughts on it if you do. Given the time it was released I expect it to be slightly better than the VHS release, plus the obviously advantage of not wearing down.

I love and want widescreen as much as the next guy, but you'd assume NOT own something just because it isn't available in widescreen?

Nah...not me. I hate P&S too, but I'll take it over nothing. What I am pretty against is owning anything on VHS. My current VHS titles add up to NONE. http://www.horrordvds.com/forum/smile.gif

Also, there is a widescreen Japanese laserdisc of The Monster Squad; it's quite rare, however.

I go widescreen whenever I can (of course), but I have more than a few pan-and-scam (or most likely open matte) LDs in my collection. I mean, sure I'd like to have the remake of The Blob in widescreen, but it ain't out there (yet). So I'm quite happy with my full-frame LD.

The only 2.35:1 movies that I have on pan-and-scan laserdisc are Argento's Trauma, and the Jennifer Connelly comedy Career Oppurtunities. And since the latter one only cost a buck, and I just bought it to watch JenCon on the rocking horse, I'm ok with whatever aspect ratio they give me...

Unless it is a DAMN good movie, and i know that no widescreen print exists, then yes, i will pick it up. Chances are though I feel that if there is a LD thats only P&S I feel that if I pick it up, within a week a WS DVD will be announced.

The only NON-VHS P&S movies I own are The Godfather (i needed it for a report and I regret the purchase. It was one of Paramounts first releases of the LD and it shows. Great film though) and Zapped! (Cause it was a dollar, I miss the 80s http://www.horrordvds.com/forum/smile.gif )

I was going to add The Blob (1988) to that list but then I read it will be released sometime this year from the Studio Day reports. So I'm sure it will be widescreen.

Don't get me wrong though If i saw Return of the Living Dead somewhere, that baby'ld be mine. http://www.horrordvds.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I have a copy. Image quality is noticably better than VHS. The Start and end credits are letterbox, so you get an idea of what it should look like. Pan & Scan didn't stop me from enjoying it though. Be warned, this is a 3M pressing and apparently this title has a high rate of rot. Mine is still crystal clear, however.

My Monster Squad LD seems to play perfectly. What a tease it is with those opening/closing widescreen shots! Grrr! Maybe someday I'll find the widescreen Japanese LD. Yeah, right.

I always heard 3M pressing were terrific. But this is from 1987, so maybe there weren't back then? My only complaint about the LD itself is that there was a tiny bit of glue around nearly the entire edge of the disc. Seems as if at some point some glue seaped out from the middle of the disc. It plays fine though, so hopefully it'll stay that way until something better comes along. I got it for $35.00 shipped which isn't too bad. I've already watch it like 4 times.

Don't worry too much about that excess glue around the edge. This is typical for 3M pressings and does not constitute a defect. It is annoying when it sticks to the paper inner sleeve or a little makes its way to the disc surface. Just don't use a solvent on the edge to clean it, you may breech the bond.

My next LD review will be Return of the Living Dead Part 2. That should be up this weekend. After that I'll move onto Monster Squad, which should be up sometime this coming week.
