I wanted to hear some opinions on some Universal DVDs. I know I can read the reviews on this site but I like to hear more than one opinion. Here is the list:

American Werewolf In London
The Birds
Psycho
Play Misty For Me
The Thing (1982)

I own the first three: AWIL, The Birds, and Psycho. All are well done, and I wouldn't give them away for anything! Lots of great features, wonderful picture quality, and the films are just excellent to begin with.

I've seen Play Misty for Me, but only on VHS, so I can't say anything about the DVD.

I rented the DVD of The Thing a couple years ago, but I can't remember much about it. I really didn't go through the extras, but I remember there were tons of them and they all looked really cool. The picture quality on the movie was great, and so was the movie itself!

Although Universal has been fucking things up a bit lately, they still put out some great DVDs in the past! :)

The AWIL disc is wonderful. The video quality is stunning, especially compared to the old VHS. You can actually see what's going on in the porno theater! The sound is great too, with a nice 5.1 mix. There's an audio commentary with David Naughton and Griffin Dunne which I loved, although some thought it was a bit boring. There's a small featurette with Landis also that's interesting, as well as one with Rick Baker. There's video of Naughton getting body molds for the FX work, and also a promo from the time the film got released.

THE THING is also an awesome disc. The video quality is amazing for something non-anamorphic, and there's very little dirt or grain, and no print damage to speak of. Another great 5.1 mix here too. The commentary with Carpenter and Kurt Russell is awesome, they discuss the locations, filming, and the release of the film. There's also an 80 minute documentary on the film which is fascinating and gives tons of info. There're also some other extras, but the documentary makes this more like a 2-for-1 deal.

Both of these discs are fantastic and totally worth picking up.

Damn AndrewBBD, that was just about everything I was gonna say about those 2 discs.
The Thing SHOULD be in everyone's collection, esp. now that it's cheap. It's worth it for the commentary alone, and the 5.1 soundtrack is one of the best ever. The only thing that could be better would be an anamorphic print and/or if they find the footage from a couple of deleted scenes that didn't make this disc (there were stills somewhere on the disc, the extras are extensive).
I'd kinda like to see the alternate TV ending as well, but Carpenter doesn't like or condone it (he mentioned in the comm.) so that's a long shot at best.

Yeah, I'd like to see the stuff with Nauls kicking the bucket, even though the way it is in the film is fine, I love how he just disappears

There were also those stills of the frozen plants, ala the classic Thing movie, and some dude stuck to the door/wall with a shovel!
