This comes from Fangoria.com's news page:
Video trade ads have revealed the details of the long-awaited special-edition two-DVD release of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, coming from MGM Home Video December 16. The set will include a brand new, high-definition transfer of the John Carpenter science-fiction thriller, with fresh 5.1 audio and a pair of audio commentaries (no details on who’s on ’em, but presumably one will be the highly entertaining Carpenter/Kurt Russell track from the previous ESCAPE laserdisc). The second disc will contain what is likely the most anticipated extra: the full 10-minute deleted bank robbery scene (also with Carpenter/Russell commentary), along with a new featurette on the film and another on the SNAKE PLISSKEN CHRONICLES comic book, trailers, a photo gallery and more. The discs will come in a digipak with liner notes by Carpenter, plus a copy of a special-edition SNAKE PLISSKEN comic. All this for only $30!
Everything about this release sounds fantastic except for that damned digipak!
Now I really hope MGM announces the WILD AT HEART SE soon. I'm starting to worry it was just a rumor. :(

Yeah, DVDFile had similar details (I'll post it since there are some added bits of info): It's 1997. New York City is a maximum security prison. And Snake Plissken is your man. On December 16th, MGM Home entertainment will at last release John Carpenter's cult classic Escape From New York in a new two-disc special edition. Remastered in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround, extras include the full 10-minute deleted "Robbery Sequence" restored and with optional commentary with Carpenter and star Kurt Russell, two additional full-length audio commentaries with Carpenter and Russell and producer Debra Hill and production designer Joe Alves, the new "Return to Escape From New York" documentary, the "Making of John Carpenter's Snake Plissken Chronicles" comic featurette, a still gallery, trailers, and an exclusive full-color mini-comic inside the package. Retail is $29.95. The only thing that troubles me is the $30 retail price! This is MGM, I can't recall them doing that in quite a while (although I'm sure it's happened). Most of their SE's are $19.99 or $24.99 retail tops.

ESCAPE ON IT'S WAY BACK
"No matter how hard they tried, they just couldn't kill Snake. Even when MGM practically insulted us movie fans by releasing a bare bones DVD of it a few years ago, we knew he'd be back for more. And we were right.
MGM has specified some of the extras that will be loaded upon the highly anticipated Escape from New York: Special Edition DVD, now set for a December 16th release. The info comes from some video trade ads so we're not "official" yet, but it's looking damn good...
Disc one will feature the film in a brand-new glorious transfer that I'm sure will look pristine (they've had long enough to work on it), along with a new 5.1 surround track and two commentaries (not sure who yet, but hopefully the Carpenter/Russell one from the laserdisc).
The second disc will feature the long-awaited full 10 minute bank robbery scene, also with commentary, that never appeared in the final movie, a new featurette on the film and the comic book, 'Snake Plissken Chronicles', trailers, photo galleries, and hopefully a lot more. The disc will also feature a special edition of the aforementioned comic, and the MSRP right now is only $29.95.
Damn, you MGM, will you not be happy til I have to sell my car and my unborn children to afford all your movies?!?"

Well, I have not paid retail for a DVD, like, ever.... So $30 or not, I wonät be paying that. DDD have done MAJOR discounts on MGM stuff up until now, so I expect a much better price than that.
This is a good film, but it has to be cheap enough. $15 seems about right - we're just going to have to wait and see how close the discounters can get to that.

Phantasm SE used to retail for $35. Of course, that was way back.
$30 is still a steal.

Probably be 15.99-19.99 at Best Buy the first week of release. And it will sell out fast, only a week before Xmas.

I am guessing it is 30 because it is a two disc set, which MGM rarely does, and it will have that comic included as well. Still though, I think this is a steal. This disc sounds like it is going to be just fantastic. It has been a long time coming, but pretty soon Snake will be back in action!

Too bad the cover art sucks. Snake's tattoo is on his stomach not his arm! What's wrong with the original theatrical poster art? Oh well I guess you can't have everything. I'll still buy it, without hesitation.

Yeah, I hear you!! I love the original poster, and happen to own a copy. They should have stuck with that, but beggars can't be choosers. As long as this is the definitive dvd release, I'll be happy!!

Of course we'll be getting it for less than retail, but it'll still be substantially more than it would've been with a cheaper retail. Like I said, I'm guess around $18-22. But still more money than I'd like to spend. As I've said before, I'm a penny pincher and just surprised that they'd have a high retail. It's not that I don't understand it (the comics probably set them back a bit) just rather disappointed in it. No biggie.

Carpenter/Russell commentary and 10 min. bank robbery scene... it's worth the price! I wonder if there will be any info on the Plissken game.

I cannot wait for this release, I'm glad there's some official news about it now. Now, anyone remember the news of a possible Escape From New York anime or some shit? Someone posted news about that eons ago and haven't heard jack about that since.

This was available on one of the vhs releases. Unfortunately, not the one I own, but a complete remastered dvd, with all the goodies will make me happy.

That wasn't on the VHS, it was the same 10 minute segment from tha laserdisc that only had clips of the scene mixed with interviews, not the whole thing, and definitly no commentary (not even on the laserdisc where it could have had comm.)
I still have that VHS for trade (foolscreen unfortunatly, so I'd let it go for pennies). Maybe someone might want it for the segment that might not be on the dvd?
This disc sounds sweet, and if I have to pay $25 for it, I will with a smile!
Hope the second comm. is a new Carpenter/Russell one. The laser comm. is another good one from these 2, a new one would set it over the top!
