I literally just saw Underworld at the Toronto film fest. Unfortunately, it is not that great. It clocked in at an extremely drawn out 2 hours. The acting and the script was unintentionally comical. Considering this film had a big budget, it was the least entertaining of the 7 films I have seen at the festival so far. All of which had pocket change for a budget in comparison. Some of the audience were actually chuckling at some of the badly acted/scripted scenes. It ripped off scenes from Resident Evil and Nemesis of what I noticed. There was extremely minute gore considering the premise of the story. It makes me wonder if they were under contractual obligation to not make this film for a strictly R rated audience.

Actually, I was wondering the same thing myself as I was creating it! But really. I know the trailer looks kick ass but that is only a minute portion of the movie.

Underworld looks like every recent sci-fi film in recent release. Scenes looked ripped off from DARK CITY, MATRIX and the lesser trendy "flying-on-wires" features with overdone CGI. There's nothing about this thing that makes me want to see it. I'm getting sick of these types of films - the twelve year old in me is tired of 'em too. I can't wait for this trend of Matrix wanna-be's to die a violent death.

Matrix was hardly original btw. I dont know why ppl think it has so many rip offs, when its a ripoff itself...

The female star of Underworld was on the Daily Show the other day. She's pretty hot.

I'll see the movie just because of her. But probalby not 'til its out on DVD.

Her name is Kate Beckinsale. :p She's undoubtedly one of my favorites, and I see everything she's in.

More info:

I have seen an advanced screening of this piece of garbage at the Toronto Film festival. Now here is what I heard. It was supposed to have 2 screenings but it only had one. This is the deal. The festival was called by the company to cancel both screenings because the test sceenings before the festival went poorly (I wonder why). The festival had already sold tickets for the first screening so they could not cancel it. The film company does not want the word to get out as to how bad this film is because they want your money. They can't have your money if you know better than to spend your hard earned cash to go see this poor effort.

As for the film itself, it is very tame. The dialogue is absolutely terrible, acting is mediocre at best and only has enough violence to fill its one minute trailor. It copies off of various other movies and did not even beat them at their own game. Trust me, even other members of the audience were laughing at the film even though the director was present. There is also a game where its characters and premise were ripped of by the makers of Underworld. Now, the makers of Underworld are currently being sued by the game makers!!!!!

Please keep in mind that any information that I have written beyond my personal impression of the film is based on info others had passed on to me. I am not out to bad mouth the film, but I feel unfairly ripped having to sit through its 2 hours.

What was she wearing?

Nothing slick. A kinda off white sweater with some kind of pants. Here hair was a lot longer than in the movie and was kinda curly. On top of that it was brown. She looks a lot hotter in the movie but she is always fully colothed to what I recall.

Thanks for the info. She was wearing a modest skirt when she was on the Daily Show.

There's something about modesty in a woman that turns me on.:sperm:

No matter what, people are gonna like what they wanna like. The trailer does look kick ass but people are going to have to learn the expensive way. I have read some good reviews myself but I have a feeling that on the bigger sites like imdb, the film makers have their friends flooding it with good reviews. Just like when they pulled the second screening at the Toronto film fest. They need to cover up how bad it is so they can blindside the film going public when the film debuts across the nation. So that way, there is less people like me to warn others before the offical release date. I would like to reiterate that Karen B. is not naked or anything in this film. So even she is not a good reason to watch this.

When you look at everything opening wide this weekend, Underworld might benefit.

The only other thing that appeals to me is Cold Creek Manor.

Both movies got trounced at Rotten Tomatoes. But my prediction for big box office this weekend is Secondhand Lion, just because its family friendly.

Bubba Ho Tep is opening in limited release and has ten out of ten fresh reviews. Does anyone know if Bubba is slated to go wide? Or are most of us fated to first find it on DVD?

I'd been awaiting this film for a while, but all the negativity directed at it lately had me worrying about its quality. I just got back from seeing it, and am very happy to say that this film was quite thrilling to put it lightly. My instincts were correct yet again, and I wound up loving this film. It has some minor flaws and its gothic style is a bit derivative, but this film overcomes all that and delivers a very engrossing thrill ride with some cool characters, a groovy backstory, and stellar action sequences! And did I mention that Kate looks fantastic in black? :D

legnadibrom
09-20-2003, 01:43 PM
saw it at a 12:45am showing this evening,
basically it comes down to the negativity spread about this flick being true, i have to disagree with cujo,
this film rips off numerous films, the many mentioned before it even came out, plus "batman," "terminator 2," and "buffy the vampire slayer,"
and there is an "elder" vampire ripped almost directly from "blade 2,"
and i know someone has gone off about it before, but why does every horror/sci-fi/action flick have to have someone being sliced in some way,
this film steals directly from "equilibrium" when taye diggs' face is sliced diagonally, the exact same situation occurs here, with the person getting quickly sliced, and turns around to look at the slicer, and 5-10 seconds go by, the slicee looks puzzled, and then half his face slides off his head, and his body drops to the floor,
this movie is fairly entertaining, but the fact that almost every scene is pilfered from somewhere else makes its impact lessened,
and the hybrid that scott speedman becomes is such a disapppointment, the look of him, not to mention the fact that he almost died, and yet he has mastered his new upgraded-self to beat probably the most powerful elder vampire that exists?,
although, transformation scenes are well-directed, with quick cuts, never setting on the beasts for too long
another loud, talkative, obnoxious audience, humanity at its finest

After watching it last night, I couldn't agree with you more! This film was very drawn out, and was boring for a while. It was so derivitive. There wasn't a movie it didn't steal from, including the ending which, as legna said, took directly from Equilibrium. Unoriginal and uninspired!! Why in hell were the vampires and werewolves constantly fighting as humans with guns? Because it lowered the budget? The film did not meet my expectations at all!

I read most of those reviews and I can say that probably half of them didn't even see the movie and for the most part the reviews are just horrible. Do people actually get paid to write shitty reviews like those?

Anyway I saw Underworld tonight and I really liked it. Viktor was not the best actor but he did kick fucking ass. He killed one of the werewolves with his bare hands and could have killed Michael if Selene didn't cut half his head off. There were no major plot holes. There were hardly any cheesy lines (and you know there were plenty of chances for unnecessary, forced, cheese). The movie looked dark and dreary and had great atmosphere. Kate was beautiful. The werewolf transformations were pretty cool looking. I wouldn't complain about anything. The lack of gore was a minor point. It might have been cool with more gore but it wouldn't have changed the story or anything.

Oh and the trailer for the new Resident Evil movie was awesome.

I saw this Friday night with my girlfriend, and she enjoyed it, but I thought it was a big piece of shit. I was bored and left for a bit to go to the bathroom. When I got back, she tried to explain what I missed, but I just didn't care. Everything I didn't like has been mentioned before, but mymain complaints were the lack of a tion and it just being overly boring. I also laughed quite a few times, which I know I shouldn't have. Oh well, I can't say I was too surprised (I wasn't even looking forward to going).

Oh I heart you. I didn't know this was even online, and Underworld doesn't open here this week, if it ever does. I did have to listen to a friend back in the states bitch about Underworld for a good half hour though, so I don't have high hopes. However, I am looking forward to the next Resident Evil.

i agree that the RE2 trailor is great,
at first the trailor seems almost like a real commerical, but once the chick mentioned "the umbrella corporation" i could hear people whispering and shit, then there was some chick behind me who about halfway into that trailor scoffs and says something like "its called plastic surgery" and one of the guys she was with reems her saying "aduh, dont you know what this is? its resident evil 2, duh" or something like that, it was kinda funny

From cinescape.

Box Office Mojo is reporting that the Friday night grosses for UNDERWORLD totalled an estimated $8,550,000. Consider that industry tracking had been estimating a Friday - Sunday opening weekend of $15 million and it's easy to see UNDERWORLD will have earned that much before tomorrow's dawn.

Sequel? It's inevitable now. Time to draft a page for UNDERWORLD 2.

I have to agree with pretty much everyone...scenes lifted directly from T2, Blade, etc...the only thing I liked was some of the cinematography and Kate Beckinsale's lovely ass.

I had hopes for this because I'd heard it was part of the MM lineup at the Toronto fest. But they have a few turkeys from time to time. I agree though, that Resident Evil 2 teaser rocked. Also cool to see the director's cut of Alien arriving soon.

Here's a snip from one of our campus papers:

To put it bluntly, if you hear, "My Vampire ogre punch causes seven points' damage to your Naarvinnian Tree Elf," on a weekly basis, then this is the movie for you. On the other hand, if you don't go around telling people to call you Lord Gabriel, and your screen name has never been of Victorian origin, then you had better steer clear of this film.

It is films like these that make movie patrons fear for the future of Hollywood....

I read mine for that exact reason! That and they have a wonderful way of stating the obvious. Like:

Greens Protest!

Just last week they ran a picture story with the headline:

Multicultural Student Coalition denounces sexual assault

Which I thought was good, but I wondered what their position was on terrorism.

Then looking at their website, I see from a few issues I missed that scientists diagree on parapsychology and that there are a lot of scooters on campus.

But the entertainment editors this semester have been concentrating on horror, so there is hope. And one or two people on the editorial page are worth reading. But most are funnier then the comics page.

Most of the comics seem to be about getting drunk. And oggling women. I think oggling women is more enjoyable sober, but that's just me.

I finally saw this and found it to be bad, very bad. The rundown:

The Good:
1. The movie was really pretty.
2. The stars were really pretty.
3. The music was ok.

The Bad:
1. The love story the whole movie was based on? Totally not feeling that.
2. The vamps were really on par with Buffy season 6-7 vamps, aka, hapless losers.
3. The werewolves were only slightly better.
4. A movie can be light on story and still impress me if it has a lot of violence or cool death scenes (see Final Destination 2. No really see it, it kicks ass.). However, this had neither.
5. Kate Beckinsale could so end up on the actresses I hate list. I haven't moved her there yet because I love Serendipity so very much. However, if she messes up Van Helsing, god have mercy on her soul.
6. I couldn't escape the feeling they were trying to chick flick up a horror movie. That very idea is inherently evil, and must be stopped at all costs.

In conclusion, 5/10 stars. If it inspires of wave of chick flick horror movies, I reserve the right to drop it to 1/10 and declare this movie public enemy number one.

Just saw Underwold. Was the movie any good? Hell, I don't know... I spent the entire time staring at Kate Beckinsale. My GOD that woman is beautiful. Vampires and werewolves? Didn't need 'em. Decent special effects? Didn't need 'em. Decent script and direction? Didn't need 'em. Yet I still got my money's worth. ;)

They can keep their Blade knock-off of a script and their lame American Werewolf in Paris CGI werewolf effects, which still don't hold a candle to films made over 20 years ago. Two hours of watching the goddess that is Kate Beckinsale stroll around in tight leather, with that sexy voice and those brooding eyes and that... I'm sorry, where was I, again?

Oh, and they killed off the only guy in the movie I liked (Lucian). I also found Speedman's acceptance of his new condition to be one of the fastest and most indifferent examples of coming to terms with supernatural beings and being cursed for life in cinematic history...

"I'm a vampire. You're a werewolf -- cursed for life."

"Oh, I get it now! That explains the fangs and the flying and the furry guys and stuff! For a second, I thought I was at a Marilyn Manson concert or something."

Wow. I didn't realize Kate B. is considered to be that hot. I think she is good looking, but not a reason to spend any money on her unless if it was a date with her. But then, I don't direct movies so I don't have a chance with that high priced hooker that many actually consider to be an actress.

I'm in the Kate B. is a goddess camp! I've only seen her interviewed on the Daily Show and she seems like a really nice person to me, aside from being beautiful in an unearthly sense. Otherwise, I would suggest starting the Kult of Kate. But I don't think nice people should have cults named after them.

Its like a personal ethos, or something.
