Here is a statement that Roger Waitkins, director of Last House On Dead End Street, sent by fax ane e-mail to various DVD amd horror related magazines in North America and Europe.

"Since the age of 25, my life has depended upon my word. This might seem intimidating to some, but since I have been a man of my word since my father beat the concept of the importance of such into me at the age of eight, the reality of such has always been atmost in my mind.

I did not sign up with Barrel for the money. The amount I received from them wouldn't pay my bar tab at the Old Village In for any given three-month period. I went along with them since I had been assured that they would produce a quality release, something they have done (with a few glaring imperfections) remarkably well.

However, Barrel's contract clearly states that they are only allowed to sell the DVD in North America. And I have been assured in writing that this would be the case.

By now, we all know how untrue this is. But let me back up a moment.

The Only reason Barrel on anybody else is making money off of LHODES is due to one person and that person is Suzanne Rowe. Period. The one extra I insisted on was the inclusion of an "egg" of Suzanne... I even went to the trouble of sending videos of her to Barrel to cull footage from. This "egg" meant more to me personally than the rest of the goddamn thing collectively.

When Barrel presented me with the first copy of the DVD my very first question was, "Is Suzanne in there?". When Barrel informed me that she wasn't, my first reaction was to leave the Cinema Wasteland convention, go to my room, and stay high for three days while I wated for the airplane back to New York. But I had a deal with Ken to appear at his convention, so I did.

(Of course, Barrel had included at no small expence I would think, the video THEY DWELL BENEATH amd although I am an admirer of Jim Van Bebber, I'll never know what the hell it's doing on there. Perhaps Barrel thought it would appeal to Necrophagia's multitude of fans).

Currently, Barrel is distributing DVD's of LHODES all over Europe (even a casual search on the internet will bear this out) effectively killing any deals I may have been pending. Since they are only permited to sell the picture to US and Canada this is clearly a violation of our contract.

I offered them what both myself and my people considered an honourable way out but they chose to call their lawyers instead. They, of course, are too stupid or too greedy to realise that it was the Suzanne thing that fucked them from the beginning"

So this is it. I guess that Roger understands that you cannot police the internet (I bought my copy from Amazon) but he is pissed off about the other thing...

However, he is wrong about one thing. I mean, the DVD is coded Region 1, unplayable to European DVD players. Of course, I had mine fixed and why shouldn't I? What can I do? Sit and wait until a greek distibutor buys the rights for a film like LHODES that appeals to, what, 1000 greeks?

Barrel has not responded yet to any of this, but if Roger is true in what he says, they should have tried to include the egg he required, if the director of the film had demanded it.

Who knows...

wow---does anyone get the feeling that Roger Watkins might be a little full of himself? YOu would think he'd be grateful that at this point anybody even knows or cares about the film....

Don't know about that marcx. The film was already known among fans of undreground horror as a gritty little gem for horror-freaks! And at least he admits that the work on the DVD was really good, instead of REALLY ungrateful directors like Van Bebber...

maybe--but it seems like the treatment that that film got was rather exceptional...so i guess its hard for me to sympathize--than again I guess if I had pending deals in other countries ruined I'd be upset too...so maybe I was a little hasty there...my gut reaction may have been a little off here....

Hmmm... it would be more convincing if he had included the contract or a least the part that states the oveseas distribution rights. Is he expecting to earn enough for another three months of binging?

The movie itself is utter crappola.

Im curious about the easter egg he said they left out but his other points have absolutely no validity. He signed the contract accepting little money and the disc is R1. Does he expect them to keep people with region free players from importing it?

Heh, I figured by Barrel adding the "They Dwell Beneath" video, it only helped add more interest and fan base to this movie. Most anyone who's a Necrophagia fan would pick this DVD up being that the band are fans of it and would contribute a video in honor of it.

Hell man, if there were a King Diamond (as an example, being a King Diamond nut) video on this DVD, I still wouldn't be buying the DVD for the KD video. That's a bit insane, thrash, and I have to agree with the director. there's no reason for it being there.

I wouldn't buy a $30 DVD either for just a music video. But with the buzz going around here during the time it was originally scheduled to be released it was regarded as a great work of art by many here. So with that and the fact that it had loads of extras on there and the fact that Necrophagia had a video on there, it was enough for me to take the blind dive in ordering it.

Granted it was a blind buy but that was a chance I was willing to take and with all those extras included at least there would be something in that release that I'd like. Needless to say I didn't like the movie all that much but some of the extras had some replay value to 'em.

If the band wanted to do a tribute video to the movie and Barrel didn't object then I say it was fine to have it on there. If the director didn't want it on there then he shouldn't have signed the contract.

Sure death / black metal isn't everyone's cup of tea but lets face it, more people would buy the movie with the Necrophagia video included than with it not being on there. Having the video included is a selling point and opens up a new fan base of metal heads to this classic horror film. In turn, it also opens up a fan base of horror fans to the world of death / black metal (cross promotion). If having the music video included is an eyesore for the horror fans then don't watch it and vice versa (in my case not watching the movie, only the extras: short films, music video and other bonus materials).

The music video has nothing to do with the movie itself other than the fact that a band wanted to contribute to a horror favorite of their's and pay some homeage to the director's original vision. If the director is ungrateful then its his own downfall.

I applaud anybody with some merit to their name who feels that they would want to contribute to anything (music, movies etc.) should be allowed to do so in accordance to the restrictions made by the powers that be.
