My first attempt at a lame humor thread title.
I came across this on dvdempire, seams Universal is gonna re-cash in on Pitch Black, now know as The Chronicles Of Riddick : Pitch Black with not 1, but 4 new dvds of the now lamely re-named classic.
http://images.dvdempire.com/gen/movies/590680h.jpg
Available in WS or FS, rated or un-rated. Loaded with new shitty new features (they have to be better than the horseshit on the first disc though! ), but losing the DTS soundtrack.
New shit:
An Introduction By David Twohy
The Game Is On
The Johns Chase Log
The Chronicles Of Riddick Visual Encyclopedia
Prized Possession
A View Into The Dark
The Making of Pitch Black
Feature Commentary With Director David Twohy and Actors Vin Diesel and Cole Hauser
Feature Commentary with Director David Twohy, Producer Tom Engleman and Visual Effects Supervisor Peter Chiang

So the commentaries aren't new. The pic on deepdiscount shows a free ticket to the new Riddick movie though. I'll stick with the DTS version I have. Others have the option of being fucked if they want. Can't really call this a surprise, not even the re-naming ala' Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark :fuck: SR is $26.98, but it's only about $20 online. The milking will commence on 6-01.

--LOL-- They know no depths. Still, I don't consider this a classic, so they get to keep it. Maybe next time they could repackage with a nude chick on the front.

Now see, Universal was oh so close to a sale there Dwatts. But now I think I'll wait it out for the nude chick edition. :D

Both of the old dvds have DTS tracks. There's still copies left (Best Buy in my neck of the woods had at least 3 last week, but all at a roboust $22.99 as it never took a price cut). Look for this cover and the purple bar on the bottom (R-rated doesn't have the bottom bar).
http://images.dvdempire.com/gen/movies/17863h.jpg. Looks like it's probably out of print now, but shouldn't be too hard to find. Check dvdpricesearch, Overstock.com says they have it in stock for $10.99, but I never ordered from them so I can't recomend it.
The extra scenes are mostly character developements and I see no reason for it not to be rated R as well, except it probably never went to the MPAA. The nude chick cover would be funny as hell, since there are no nude chicks in either version!

Universal seems to be worse than AB when it comes to reissuing dvds. how many Mummy dvds did they release?

I think only 3, though it felt like more.
There was the "collector's edition" which had 2 (WS or FS). Then the "ultimate edition" which has both versions. Then the CE again in the boxset. Call it 4. They're out-doing themselves with Pitch Black. This will make 6 (unless there were FS versions of the first release I never saw).
Studios have there work cut out to reach AB's Evil Dead or Army of Darkness output  . Here's hoping it never happens!

That's exactly what it is, it never went to the MPAA, so they can't put the R on it or they'll get sued.

If I'm not mistaken some of the gore is extended. I can't remember specifics, though. I only have the VHS.

I like Twohy, and Vin Diesel was actually pretty good in this. Hate this re-issue concept though. Don't think I'll be picking up any version. It wasn't a library title as far as I'm concerned. Which is a hilarious statement for me to make actually, as I own hundreds of DVD's which aren't really anything special...but I like 'em.

Funny, when I went and saw it in the theater I hated it as well. It wasn't anything like what I expected. Then I kept hearing how good it was and tryed it again after borrowing a friends dvd, and just dug it.
I wouldn't call it a favorite, but I really like it now after really hating it the first time. After a few more views, I keep liking it more.

I saw this before on tv I think...? It was ok, but I'm sure it was chopped to hell. I may pick this new version up at some point but I'm not a big Diesel fan.

Since i have yet to purchase PITCH BLACK, i decided to pick up this newly reissued dvd. first off, it DOES have DTS! contrary to earlier posts. and i must say, the DTS track kicks ass! the video quality looks like something from a few years ago. not up to 2004 major studio transfer standards. I guess Universal is using the same video from the previous release (and audio for that matter). as for the extras, talk about fucking lame! i haven't listened to the audio commentaries (2), but i imagine they're the only things worth while on the disc. The making of is something you'd see on HBO. one of the extras is text based (animated, but still text nevertheless). Another extra has a voice over on some video, nothing exciting. The other stuff is basically commercials for the new riddick anime (which looks great IMO), video game and movie. these only last a minute or two! the new introduction has the director talking more about the new film than PB! LOL At any rate, the dvd did come with a free movie ticket.

Damn!

I meant to give you a "thanks for the heads up!" as I ordered that DVD from Overstock after you had posted that.

I have ordered from OS numerous times with no problems, so, um, thanks for the heads up. :D

The "unrated" label was a crock. It was only more talk, nothing that changed the content enough to change the rating. At least I couldn't see anything.

I may be alone, but I really enjoyed the film, except that I can't buy the fact of these creatures surviving without a food supply, even though they supposedly cannibalized each other. That was a stupid concept. Creatures do what they can to survive, but they wouldn't have developed on a world for no reason, and with no real means of survival.

The repackaging is BS, but I understand it, since a lot of people would be unfamiliar with the Pitch Black and wouldn't identify it as the precursor to Chronicles of Riddick. It makes sense from a marketing standpoint. Most of us who liked the film, already bought it. The free ticket is definitely an incentive if you haven't bought it, or if you wanted to upgrade, since it takes care of almost half the price of the dvd.

Sorry about that all. All the listings said nothing about DTS so I figured Universal was pulling a Fox and yanking the DTS track. Sucks to hear the extras suck on this as well, they have to be better than the old ones extras I would think/hope. I listened to the commentaries once each and nothing stands out as I don't remember either of them (so they aren't extra good or bad, those are the comm. that get noticed). The audio/visual is the best thing about either disc it sounds like, but the old cover is always better.
