View Full Version : Salton Sea

So how come there's never been a thread on this one? I just got through watching it and thought it was pretty damn good, if a little sentimental. Take a little meth, a little wanton murder, a little revenge, and you have a pretty good 99 minutes of entertainment. The DVD looks great - and Val Kilmer does a good job.
So how about it, anyone else seen this?
Yep, I liked it too. Been a while since I saw it, but a good flick from what I remember. Wasn't it based on a true story?
I saw it, and thought it was OK, nothing special.
Personally, I think the story of the Salton Sea itself is more entertaining! It's about 100 miles east of San Diego. What's interesting is that it was completely man-made, and completely accidental. It was an irrigation experiment gone horribly wrong, which led to the creation of the Sea. It then became a resort community, but then faded. Thus leaving the kind of seedy ghost town atmosphere seen in the film. The sea is now kind of drying up, as it was a place Nature never intended for there to be a sea. Wildlife is now dying, and the water is becoming more and more salty.
Look it up on Google, fascinating stuff if that's what you're into.

This was on the other night but I feel asleep as soon as it started and will try to catch it again. Paff is right... they tried to make it a resort town but for the most part it's turned into trailer trash. We've had a house out there since I was a kid and I still go out there at least once a year for a weekend or two. Nothing to do but get drunk, ride motorcycles and stay out of the water.

I thought the twists in the story were good - good performances all around, great direction with some nice visuals from a no-one as far as I can make out (he's made episodes for lame TV shows) A couple of scenes were pretty intense (badger in the cage, and visiting the black drugs dealer with the woman under the mattress).
For me this worked well on most levels. It's certainly better than most "drama" to come out of mainstream Hollywood, that's for sure. How about the dude who'd burnt his nose off by doing too much meth? Ouch.

I like this movie a lot. I caught the first half or so on cable one night then went and got the dvd. Lots of nice twisted characters and plot turns, highly entertaining. Kilmer keeps proving he is a great actor, and Vincent D'Onofrio is off the hook in this (despite the kinda week CGI on his nose). Also love Glenn Plummer (the dealer with the chick under the matress), I can't think of seeing him in any bad role. This was almost as good as his character in Thursday!

I think it's a great little film... I've seen it about two times all the way through, and have caught bits and pieces of it from time to time. Val Kilmer is so good, he almost disappears into the role. The story is, by turns, funny, tragic, surreal, and always fascinating. I might get around to getting this on DVD some day...
