Went to a screening on sunday and must say this is one of
the creepiest films i have watched in years but i fear thats it's
going to be a huge flop if the reaction of the mostly teen audience
is a indication. basic plot with no spoilers is that Nicole Kidman plays a women who husband is lost/never returned from the war
moves into a huge mansion and due to a rare disease her two
children can not be exposed to light. i'm not going to write anything more on the plot as i would have been pissed if anyone
had spoiled this film for me.

The films moves at a slow pace, has almost zero special effects
and gore, has almost no false scares, no huge naked breasts or
hot lesbians and no cast members from the WB or UPN (sorry
guys, katie holmes does not show up in this one to flash us
her lungwarts).

What the film does have is atmosphere to burn, a great role for
nicole kidman and a script thats both smart and scary.

The director also did two of my all time faves, thesis and open your eyes (thesis is on dvd in the USA and OYE is available as
a Japanese import on dvd PLEASE CHECK THEM OUT!!!).

I think maybe 30 people at the screening were over 20 and for
the most part the audience could not keep still/shut-the-fuck-up
during the screening with many vocally complaining that the film
was moving to slow for them while stuffing their pie holes full of
free popcorn.

I hope some of you on the boards will check it out this weekend
there is no "pay off" every five minutes but the ending is a doozy
and has a atmosphere worthy of the best of hammer and classic
horror films.

You said Hammer, so I'm there! I am a little miffed about the "no huge naked breasts" thing, but I guess I'll just have to bare with it. *sigh* lol :D

But seriously, I am looking forward to this one, definitely.

Sounds great. I'm eager to see this one. I'm kind of glad to hear the kids don't like it - maybe they won't be there yakking away through it when I see it! :D

The trailer looks great - I'm going to add this one to my viewing list. Looks scary, though... :(

"Lungwarts"?

"Lungwarts"

ROTFLMAO

That's too funny!

The Others looks like the best ghost story since the original The Haunting. Though there have been a handful of other ghost stories since, Lady In White, Haunting of Hell House and The Changling and a couple others... truely firghtning ghost tales are rare. I am at this one on Friday... with bells on!

Just tried to see this one... good news for those that thought it would bomb... every damn showing was sold out at three theatres I went to.

I don't think it'll tank.

Hope I can get in tomorrow.

I saw this last night and really enjoyed it. I am so sick of teeny bopper horror. Finally, a mature horror film in general release. It was very atmospheric and the almost total lack of effects was a great relief. I figured things out about halfway through, but I still had a great time.

I do worry about how it will do, though. People were very figitty during the first half of the movie. They got into it a little more during the last part - including the woman who screamed loudly a couple of times, but I think most were expecting just mindless action. I hope I'm wrong though.

And now, off to Session 9! Two good horror movies in one weekend - ain't life great?

I saw this last night & was pleasantly surprised. Good, spooky ghost story. I think the ending was really good, although it has been done before...

Also, I think the 2 child actors did a wonderful job. Usually kids in movies annoy the piss out of me, but these were great performances.

Bottom line: The Others is definitely closer to what I, as a horror fan, want to see than something like Valentine or Urban Legends 2. Go see it & support a good flick :)

I saw it yesterday. It was amazing. The ending was very shocking. I never once figured it out. But anyways, yeah this was a great flick and is definately worth checking out.

Wow! No bad reviews yet? I guess I'm going to have to check this one out. I'm just worried because every film I've seen this year has been a let down, with maybe the exception of KOD. That film wasn't great, but the fights were cool.

The Others is the best ghost movie I've seen in a long, long while.

I have to add a "me too". The Others was an excellent movie. I didn't mind paying out $7.25 for the non-matinee showing i went to. I'm such a penny pincher when it comes to movies. This is actually one of the best movies i've seen this year. I almost hate to say that. A story-driven flick, well acted, keeps you on the edge of your seat. It almost makes me want to see it again!

A big thanks to all on the board who went out and supported
this very good film. not a bad weekend with almost 14 million
playing in a lot less theaters then AP2 and RH2.

it'll probably take months before "The Others" surfaces here in Europe...

BTW:

If you have liberated yourself from tiranny (*) you can also get "Open Your Eyes" (Abre Los Ojos) here:

(search for the spanish title).

Mind you, though, no scares in this one, not really. Just for those interested in more from director Amenabar.
