You know, it was good and I enjoyed it--but it was nowhere near as good as its been hyped up to be. It was pretty intense, but I really expected something more frightening--
still good though..but dont go expecting the greatest thing over...its definately subject to the blair Witch overhype-another film that I really like-but not as much as hype would have made e believe...

I was watching Ebert’s review of Open Water on TV the other night. He was saying that the movie really got to him and he had to go outside afterwards into the sunlight to relieve some of the tension and stress the film caused him.
No doubt not everyone will feel the same way about the film just like in the case of BWP but I’m still looking forward to it as one of my most anticipated of the year.

Yes, but the film resonated on a different level with Ebert than just the surface shocks. His review here: http://www.suntimes.com/output/ebert1/wkp-news-water06f.html
I'm looking forward to seeing this myself. Now, if only a theater near me was showing it. :eek2:

Thanks. That review sounds allot like the way I felt about BWP. A film needs to tap into someone’s subconscious fears in order to be anything more then just creepy of jump scary. That kind of film will also not affect everyone the same way. Some are going to hate it and some are going to love it. If a film that is suppose to tap into your internal fears doesn’t hit yours then it may seem stupid or boring but if it does like obviously it effected Ebert and the BWP effect me it’s a haunting experience that last a long time.

Thanks for the heads up but I will still see this in the theater. I have always loved ocean based horror movies.
I'm seeing this in an hour. I've refrained from watching any and all TV Spots and promotional material on this. I don't want another Blair Witch.

I dont want anyone to misunderstand me--I thought it was real good---
but I had really jacked up expectations and it didnt live up to them--oh well....
actually i just read the ebert review and i think its right on--the movie captures the slow dread and loneliness perfectly--but for some reason I had gone in expecting outright terror--like the 2nd coming of the exorcist or the shining--
funny eberts review in some ways has me thinking more fondly of the film--it delivers emotions--just different ones than I was expecting...
oh and it made my wife cry...but of course she pregnant and so thats not too hard these days....

I'm excited to see this, the trailer made me very nervous. However, I still need to see Collateral, The Bourne Supremacy, The Village, and She Hate Me. Despite what others have been saying, this summer is a pretty good one for movies.

There's already a pretty recent thread on this gem, but oh well. This film was one of my most anticipated of 2004, and I had the pleasure of seeing it back in May. It is quite incredible, and much like Blair Witch (which people seem intent on comparing this to), it surpassed the hype for me. Personally, hype never effects my opinion of a disappointing film. Still, I think this film (again, like Blair Witch) deserves all the hype its getting and then some.
Its easily one of the most frightening films I've seen, and while I love Jaws (another film which many people want to compare it to), I think this film definitely beats it out scare-wise. It is truly unnerving and very intense throughout, and the film is just an astonishing piece of work through and through. Some really great quiet, unsettling tension. The director really knows how to play with the audience's emotions. The two leads are stellar, and their emotional performances are the film's main basis. The underwater photography is also stunning, all the more so because I'm so interested in marine biology. Also, not knowing much of the details of the actual events added a lot to the experience, and I'm glad I resisted my urge to read up on it until I'd seen the film. This is easily one of the best films of this year, and is already a new favorite.

This is usually the reaction I get after reading or hearing one of Ebert's reviews. It's about time he got some of his own medicine. Why listen to a guy who can't stand horror movies anyway?

Well if people are comparing it to BWP and Ebert gave BWP 4 stars and loved this film as well. Then for me it's worth listening to.

I'm going to see it in spite of Ebert's high praise review :D It's an interesting idea and so long as they don't try to fluff it up it also sounds like a challenging piece of film making. Like something Hitchcock would do.
Just got back from seeing this and Collateral. (which I'll discuss elsewhere) Anywho, I thought it was alright. I was pretty bored with the first half hour, but once they plopped the two in the water, things got into gear. I have to give the writer credit, for still being able to let us get to know the characters in such a short time. My main two gripes were the acting (which is forgiveable, I'm sure these are new actors, and they seemed to get more believeable as the film progressed) and their odd choices of music which made scenes which should've been horrifying kind of mean spirited and funny.
And one other thing Did anyone else find the chick being naked in that one scene completely and utterly pointless? I think they did that just to get some titties on screen.
