I just watch the R2 DVD last night. A great little gem indeed. Probably the best movie I've seen this year.

EDIT: I also have to give HUGE props for the A/V department. My sub was in full effect for the majority of the film (and it was very low stuff in the 20-30 hz range). The rears were used so well, that I constantly looked behind me to see if someone was at my front door (it was not though, just the movie, but it still freaked me out). The Video quality is superb too. Very natural colors and no compression or edge enhancment is evident. The blacks are black as can be and the contrast is perfect. I'd have to give the A/V a 10/10. I don't see how it could get any better.

Watched the dvd. I thought the film was kinda bad.
WAY too much humor, the horror element suffered because of it.
Basically just a group of blathering idiots standing around yabbering while zombies attack, or rather while zombies seem to stand around and not attack enough. The actors are good, they all have good comic timing and come off witty at times, but the situations, the directing and the films writing work against that.

The films ad promos are trying to hype this as a funny scary movie. Believe you me this film isn't an ounce scary. It's obviously made for people who prefer comedies and I think it doesn't respect the horror genre one ioada. Every scene seems like a mock up of either dawn of the dead, day of the dead, the evil dead, etc. The films goriest scene is ripped straight out of Day of the dead as one of the characters is pulled apart. Because of the silly comic vibe of the movie these gory scenes don't have any power. The filmmakers tried to make a funny picture, and if you like that sort of thing they probably succeeded, but it was at the expense of everything else. It basically offers the horror fan the zombie element, it's just a shame it didn't treat it more seriously or with respect.

BLAH!!!!!

KR~!
09-11-2004, 05:41 PM
But, it was always suppose to be a straight comedy! It has always been marketed as one

I never once read anyone describe it as a horror film. :eek2:

I mean look at the name!

09-11-2004, 06:14 PM
yeah exactly look at the poster!!!

"a romantic comedy, with zombies."

I dont know if you know much about the actors but there all from comedy tv shows here in the uk, after seeing the cast i had no doubts that this would be a comedy. Cant see how people could even take a film titled 'shaun of the dead' seriously!

meep
09-12-2004, 02:55 AM
Yeah I'll agree that its not being misrepresented as a horror film, but lately here in the US they have been running ads trying to percieve the film as both a laugh out loud comedy and a scary horror film. That kind of upsetted me.
I wasn't familiar with the film before watching it, and I really thought it would have taken the horror element more seriously, but it didn't at all. My bad about that, i'm sorry. I can understand why the film will have its legion of fans. But I also can't help but think the film to be made by people who were a bit careless when dealing with a genre I really care about. The main film it likes to reference, dawn of the dead is a fairly funny film at times but it's only because the comedy came out situations that were treated very real. God I love the romero zombie pictures. Sorry shaun fans!

It's a damn fine film and probably the best zombie film since Dawn 78. That's quite a statement, but I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Watched the dvd. I thought the film was kinda bad.
WAY too much humor, the horror element suffered because of it.

I don't know how you can say that, as the humor only takes up a third of the film. It is not the dumbass goofball humor the trailer makes it out to be. I was expecting a complete dumbass comedy from this and was surprised how serious it was taken.

watched it yesterday and found it quite entertaining. nothing too special, but okay. it had cool surroundeffects (with logic 7 on my lex engaged) and strong bass. for a low budget movie like this i was surprised of how good it sounded and looked. the funniest line was "i'm coming to get you barbara" :p all in all, worth a ticket at the box office, or, if you have the right equipment, the region 2 dvd (i watched the uk dvd)

Watched the R2 DVD last night. Fun stuff.
I did note the jagged lines but found them not too distracting.
One quibble: did anyone note that the picture quality gets kinda reddish/muddy towards the last 20 minutes in the pub? While I don't think its the transfer, the original elements start to look lower quality than the daylight scenes. Kinda like a work print.

I watched Shaun of the Dead on Saturday night and I thought it was great! I thought the comedy/horror element was perfect and the gore was excellent. The film was always supposed to be a homage to zombie films, evidence of which can be heard all through the film. I can see how some of this could be lost on US viewers, though, as some of the comedy relies on you being British to understand it. :p

I watched my R2 DVD last night and that was one hell of a good time. Put me in the "I fucking love this flick" category. I wish I could see this movie with a good audience. I bet it is even more fun. Regardless, I am watching it again tonight.

I didn't notice any jagged lines though. Where were they supposed to be?

I was looking up references in that movie, mainly because I was wondering if Martin Freeman, who played opposite Lucy David in The Office, had that cameo for that reason, and I found this. (http://www.moviemistakes.com/film4118/trivia) It doesn't cover every reference in the movie, but it has a few I didn't catch because I am not British.

Sign me up!

Gotta say, LOVED this movie a lot. I thought it was a great homage to the original Dawn (and zombie flicks in general) and in fact succeeded where the 2004 remake failed for me. I recognized the people from The Office right off the bat, also the guy from Little Britain. I must own this R2! This is the first thread I've checked so I'm not sure if there's an equal R1 coming out, but somehow I doubt it.

I caught that bit about Rage infected monkeys at the end, too.

Universal has set an official release date for Shaun of the Dead which stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. This hugely popular zombie flick will be available to own from the 21st December this year. The retail price will be set at around $29.98. The film itself should be presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen along with English, French and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks. I'm afraid that the extra features have yet to be confirmed by Universal, although we're pretty sure that the disc specs will be more or less identical to the region two release. Therefore you should expect four audio commentaries with the cast and crew, extended bits, makeup tests, video diaries from Simon Pegg and Lucy Davis, trailers and more. For the full specs, please refer to the region two related article at the bottom of this page. We're also hearing that the US disc will include a couple of exclusive features, although we're still waiting on confirmation. We'll bring you further details on this one, including a look at the official artwork, shortly. Stay tuned.

Finally saw this in the theaters tonight. This movie was funny as hell. The one liners and kidding in this was too funny...GET FUCKED! Too funny. The horror refenences were easy to find and the movie ran more like a comedy than a horror movie but the gore shots were pretty cool looking. The zombies maintained their slowness verses the ones that were found in the Dawn remake. Still, I like the Dawn remake more so. But thats not saying that Shaun stunk. It was a very good movie and I'm glad to have caught it in the theaters. I am more excited now than before that the loaded DVD will be released by years end.
