Hello :)

I just found out about this convention called MONSTER MANIA that is happening in Cherry Hill, NJ on August 27-29

Here is the website: MONSTER MANIA (http://www.monstermania.net/)

Well it starts today and it ain't exactly close to me but I have to admit I enjoyed the thread about the HORORFIND CON with the pictures and whatnot so I thought it would be interesting to hear about people who are attending this here MONSTER MANIA convention.

Let us know what you think :)

Damn! That is gonna be a great con. I would LOVE to meet Danielle Harris..I have had the biggest crush on her for years. Cool to see Robert Englund there also, I would like to know his take on the Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash reports.
I would also LOVE to get a Ricou Browning and Ben Chapman autograph before it is too late. Not to jinx those two men but they are getting up in age.
Please give us a full report when this over.

Consider yourself lucky that you only live an hour away.

You could still go on Saturday or Sunday.

I go to the Chiller Theatre con and that is like a good 6 1/2 to 8 hour drive from Pittsburgh, PA where I live.

Once or twice a year for that (for Chiller) is enough for me. So yes I am not going to this MONSTER MANIA con but would still like to hear comments from those that do go.

wow i just got back!! It was cool as shit! I mainly wanted to meet Candice Hilligoss from Carnival of Souls, which I did, got a signed photo, plus she signed my Criterion COS and I got a pic with her. I also met Tony Todd who took a pic with me and signed my NOTLD '90 dvd. Got pics of Verne Troyer (mini me), Caroline Munro, Gunnar Hansen and others. If anyone wants to host them for me I can post them

Well I didn't see the info you posted and it is nice to see that something is happening after 7pm other than just showing movies BUT it does VERY clearly say that the dealer room hours are 10am to 7pm on Saturday ... rather common hours for a con of this type.

How much were people charging for autographs?

The Joker
08-28-2004, 11:10 PM
Mortis,

Tony Todd - $20
Gunnar Hansen - $20
Candice Hilligoss - $10

those are really the only ones I noticed. I thought TT and GH was a bit steep? Or is it just me? They must be bringing in a nice little amount of side $$ from these conventions. Well, at least TT is, the other two rely on them I think.

Yeah I thought it was a little too much myself but to be honest, I mainly went to meet Candice Hilligoss (Carnival of Souls) and thats me and her in the last picture....for $10, she signed an 8x10 glossy, she signed my Criterion COS and I got a picture with her, you cant beat that. All in all I was happy.

I got Tony Todd, Gunnar Hansen, Danielle Harris, Sid Haig, and Betsy Palmer. They were all $20 with the exception of Gunnar, his was $15.

Did anyone go to this thing this past weekend? I talked about going with a friend of mine back in May or June but we both got too busy and never made the trip. I really wanted to go just to meet Dana Kimmell and tell her what a crush I had on her in high school. It's probably best for both of us that I didn't make it.

I actually went to this and it was my first horror convention ever. I had alot of fun, but now I'm fucking broke. How do people afford 20 bucks for an autograph for every person?!?! Its insanity!

None the less, I picked up alot of DVDs that I've been itching to get, and I met the following people:

- Linnea Quigley
- Sid Haig
- Roddy Piper (!)
- Kane Hodder
- Ken Kirzinger
- Lloyd Kaufman and the actress from Meat for Satan's Icebox

I wanted to meet Englund but his line wrapped around the building. However, during the Nightmare on Elm Street 3 Reunion, he sat about a foot away from me to watch a few trailers that went on before the Q&A session. Overall, I had a good time but I cannot believe how expensive everything was!

Linnea also told me about this Ghengis Con convention thats going down in Pittsburgh in the upcoming weeks and she gave me her e-mail address. Also, the girl from Meat from Satan's Icebox gave me her contact info as well. Awesome!

Nope, but I just moved to Pittsburgh so for me this one might be worth going to. I've gone to Horrorfind Weekend in Maryland for a few years (couldn't afford to go this year, unfortunately) and it's the only con I've ever been to. It's always been a great experience, though.

Yeah that line was outrageous. I stood in for about a half hour and then gave up when it did not move an inch the whole time. I just went inside and went to a few Q & A's and met Jobeth Williams and Kieth David. A friend of mine did wait over 7 hours. The nice thing about the big line people is that they kind of distract alot of people and keep the lines of other people who I care about more nice and short. Other than the Feldman time I spent...I think the longest I waited all weekend was about 20 minutes for Malcolm McDowell on Friday night. Friday nights in general seem like a great time to get the autographs as the celebs are not sick of being there yet.

I hear that. I stood in line with some friends as they waited for Malcolm on Friday night. The wait wasn't bad (until he left to take a dump). I was kinda drunk so I just gave him the thumbs up instead of doing anything cool.
Keith David and the Warriors didn't have anyone in their lines on Friday. I met those cats. Keith was real cool. Useless Jason Mewes had the longest line.
I was surprised at how hot Jobeth Williams was. Nice work, lady. Heather Langenkamp had a room on my floor and I walked by her making dinner plans when I was getting ice. I didn't interrupt, though.

I am thinking about going to the one in Connecticut in June to try to meet Robert Englund-have any of you guys been to the last one (11)? I was curious if the VIP passes are in any way worth the extra money. At $200 a pop, it really doesn't seem to be the case, but I am curious.

Don't buy the VIP pass! Total rip-off! It gets you one autograph from Englund and thats pretty much it. I have been to the last 4 Monster Manias...it is a really well run convention, much better than alot of other ones. Lines never last long...celebs never charge more than $25 max (and that is only the really big people like Englund or Bruce Campbell)...and none of them charge for pix as long as you are buying an autograph...so there is no need for the pass really. Englund really is great. Be prepared to wait a while...at the last one we waited about 4 hours...but it was time well spent. He is a very nice guy...and he takes the time to talk to everyone a bit. Telling little stories and stuff about all the different stuff people have brought to have signed. Even though I met him last time, I will probably do it again assuming I am not broke at the time.

02-11-2009, 02:57 AM
Thanks Eric- I appreciate the advice. It does seem like a big ripoff for that price, as I could get pretty much everything there for the regular admission and am willing to pay the $20 for the Englund autograph on my own. I guess I should try to get in line pretty early, though!

One more question- how big are is the dealers room generally? The only two cons I have been to was a Fango WOH in 2003 in Brooklyn (decent but definitely not huge dealers room) and the New York ComicCon this past weekend (Obviously HUGE and I know this could in no way match that). Sorry to be a pain with the questions, but I am thinking that this may be a better deal to go to than the Fango con at the Javits center the week before. Besides the fact that I live in CT and can easily drive to this myself, it actually seems that they may get more guests that I am interested in! I know they only have the Nightmare people listed so far, but it appears that this con looks to get more guest from the 70's and 80's horror than Fango does.

eric_angelus
02-11-2009, 03:17 AM
The dealer room is big...but not huge. I generally only go to this convention, Chiller Theater (both in NJ), and Rock and Shock (here in MA). So I don't have alot to compare it too. It is a bit smaller than the chiller dealer room, but not much...and ALOT bigger than Rock and Shock. I went to a couple of Fangos in the early 90s...and it is not as big as those were. In the Jersey events it usually fills the whole banquet room (or whatever they put it in)...plus there are a bunch of vendors in the hall just outside (usually about 12 as I recall).
But yeah, Dave...the guy who runs Mosnter Mania...loves 70s-80s horror and works really hard to have a cool theme or reunion at every event. He really puts on a great show.
For me the best part of Monster Mania is the Saturday Q an A's. They are free, and they are very cool. You can fill your whole day, and get to here from and see just about all the major people. The last 2 I have went to had Q&A with the entire surviving cast of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a huge batch of Halloween and Elm Street Alumns, The Fright Night Cast, The Lost Boys cast, etc, etc. These events are a great part of the weekend...especially if you get tired of waiting in line and working your way through crowds, or if you are trying to save a buck...but still want to enjoy yourself!

Awesome vid, man. Hope it's alright if I add ya on YouTube as a friend?

Very cool vid. I was hopin' to see the smokin' hot More twins from Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter on there, as I love the English muffin accents and of course TFC is like in my top three fave Friday flicks up with Parts 2 and 3. I'm kinda sad I didn't go, but I'm currently saving up for Europe.

This red state lad does plan to hit a north east/New England territory convention soon, in the coing years, such as MonsterMania as I hear it's roughly the best. Hopefully the More sisters will come back or make the rounds like at a more easily accessable to me convention, such as Texas Frightmare, ect. ;) Would love to hug'em and make up a lie that they're more favorite Friday victims for ol' Mr. Voorhees when I truely mean my favorite pieces of Essex County Crystal Lake ass. :D

I also plan to see one day the camp NeBeBosCo that's in NJ that was in Cunningham's original film (though I hear they can be historical pricks) and also of course the usual big genre fan's pilgramidge to the Munroeville Mall in Pittsburgh.

All in due time, my friends, all in due time ...

I've been going to these for the last 3 years and love them. I don't spend alot on autographs because I'm still not a fan of spending money on people writing their names down, but I love everything else. The dealer room is always quite good and the Q&A's are awesome. Last summer, they had one with Corey Haim and they had the original artist sing Cry Little Sister on acoustic guitar. It was alot more fun than I thought it would be.

I plan on going this summer, hopefully my new girlfriend will be open to the idea of going like my last one was.

I've always been meaning to go to Monster Mania (especially since it's like, right down the road from where my mother lives in Cherry Hill, NJ.) If anything I hope it's better than Chiller. That's always been a clusterfuck the two times I've tried to go.

At least at the last Chiller I (literally) ran into Marina Sirtis . . . still pretty hot after all these years!

Though now that I look at the guests for the next one in Cherry Hill, nobody really catches my interest other than Tobe Hooper. Might go to the Connecticut show instead . . . and see if I can throw John Saxon for a loop and have him sign my Enter the Dragon Laserdisc rather than A Nightmare on Elm Street!

It is so much better than the absolute chaos and shit that is Chiller. Unlike Chiller, you can go and have a really good time without spending a ton of cash. Everything else is better too...line management, help from staff, etc...etc...the last Chiller was total nightmare, but they seem to be learning from their mistakes and are taking steps to not overbook this time.

Monstermania and Chiller are both good but I prefer Cinema Wasteland as the ultimate. There are so many conventions now that are better like Cinevent,G-Fest,Monsterbash,etc. Monsterbash blows away Monstermania. I'm sure if you want meet Bruce Campbell for the 100th time,Monstermania may be okay but for truly interesting lineups you can't beat Cinema Wasteland and Monsterbash.

Yeah, finally, after like 10 years of an overpacked Sat. show they finally limited the ticket sales for that day to pre-order. I've been going to this thing for years and last one didn't seem any different than any other Chiller I've been to, hopefully this one won't be as bad. (Somehow I think the staff will be as clueless as ever though...) When I stand in line waiting to get in with my pre-show ticket I often wonder how many of the people behind me in the same line will get in right before they start letting the general admission people in...

Also, a general question, specifically for Chiller and Monster Mania but really for any convention, is there a noticeable difference in the number of attendee's Friday vs. Saturday? I usually go to these things on Sat. but it seems like it might be worthwhile to go Friday instead (based on the fact that you can buy Fri. Chiller tickets at the door...) but for all I really know it could be the same.

Way less people on Fridays...example at the last chiller I got to meet Barbara Steele, Linda Hamilton, Stacey Nelkin, Tiffany Shepis, Jim Krut, and Ted White... had decent conversations with all of them, and still had time to spare...all between about 6-9. Saturday alot of people where taking that much time just to wait in line to get into that main room.
The same is true at MM...at the last one I met everyone I needed to meet on Friday night, with the exception of Englund, who I met on Saturday morning.
It is much more mellow and easy to deal with on Friday nights.

NJ is a little too far of a jaunt for me, but fortunately they've decided to have one in Hartford CT this year. Hopefully they'll be adding people other than Elm St Cast Members soon. Aside from the first movie (which is great) I really don't care for any of them and I don't consider myself a fan.

Cinema Wasteland is my show aswell. Ken gets unique and original guests (how many times do you really need to meet kane, hodder, doug bradley and bill mosley), it's low key and comfortable and the show is more greared towards the stuff i'm into. i always look foward to CW.

Way less people on Fridays...

Cool, thanks! I kinda figured it could go either way so I just kept doing what I've always done (Sat. tickets). I'll probably go check out the next Chiller on Friday rather than Saturday now though.
