I'm new here but have been a horror fan just about whole life (34 years).
This is my list of the BEST of the BEST.

1: THE WOLF MAN (1941) lon chaney. jr
no werewolf movie lover can not say without dout this is the one that started it all frank priece (make-up artist) was the the tom savini, rick baker of the 30's-60's of his day just wonderful artist and the acting is great to..

2: THE HOWLING (1981)
OK some maybe asking what about AWL well that number 3 on my list.
This film kick ass for more that just a few great transformation that you only get in AWL this one has a lot more.
Rob bottin (ROBOCOP,TOTAL RECALL) made in my mind that best bar-none looking werewolves ever & has worked will rick baker new tech at time on the transformation styles.
Sad to say rob bottin is now a MIA in hollywood were is he??????

3: AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON (1981) AKA {AWL}
Yes this is a special movie not just because it's great horror movie but it's funny to.
David naughton (dr.pepper fame) is the werewolf mind it looks like dog cause is on all fours, but who cares the one BIG transformation in the apt is the greatest on film ever.
Rick baker (KING KONG,STAR WARS) was on top of his game when he work on this gem for sure and greatly give a academy award for his hard work on this film..

4: THE CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF (1961)
Hammer horror's take on THE WOLFMAN 1941.
20 years later but just as good if not better for acting the late oliver reed made you feel for the beast because being a werewolf is hard enough but being born is worst.
This is one last great hammer film's made so if you have not seen this rent if you can you will not be sorry..

5: UNDERWORLD (2003)
When i fist say the trailer for this film i was going ok CGI werewolves not bad not great i like the old make-up not CGI work on the monster's.
Then i saw the movie and say ok this look little like the HOWLING werewovles standing on upright so it little retro to me i loved the big guys
OK i just love WEREWOLVES......

Well that that it so what is you fav werewolves movie?????

1. An American Werewolf in London - perfect mix of horror and comedy - very funny, very gruesome, unsurpassed.

2. Bad Moon - under-rated little gem with a fantastic werewolf and a cool dog - excellent acting from Michael Pare.

3. The Howling - slow-moving but lovingly-made ode to werewolf films of old by Joe Dante.

#1 THE HOWLING (1981)
#2 The Company of Wolves (1985)
#3 Bad Moon (pleasant surprise and pretty effective)
#4 Silver Bullet (can it be? I found it effective when I first
saw it. Kudos for catching me off guard.)
#5 An American Werewolf in London (yes, a nice kissing-cousin to
The Howling...whatta year!)

Special Mention: The Boy Who Cried Werewolf (1973?) - when I saw this as a kid on Bay Area's Creature Features I found it scary and effective. I'd love to see it again.

the wolf man

wolfen

I'm not sure that I would include Wolfen, since they weren't werewolves, but rather supernatural wolves. At least that is what I got from the film, as I haven't read the book.

I'm holding off on my list until I catch Dog Soldiers and Bad Moon. :)

1. THE HOWLING--My Favorite Werwolf Movie of All Time! A Wonderful mix of Horror and comic humor, and with Great direction by Joe Dante. The Great cast including one of my all time favorites, the Great John Carradine, and the lovely Belinda Baliski make this one of the Best Werwolf Movies of All Time!

2. THE HOWLING V: THE REBIRTH--I know, I know, it's a HOLWING Sequel, but I LOVE this film! I love the gothic setting in he castle, and I loe the mystery surrounding the history of the castle, and just who of the group of people staying there is he Werewolf! The final reveal as to who the Werewolf is came as a surprise to me! The cast is in fine form, and the film really packs a punch for me, especially the bloody massacre a the start of the film, where the try and kill the Werewolf in the family, only to have failed! A Great little Horror film, and this one I could watch over and over, it's one of my favorites!

3. WOLF--Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pffeifer, and James Spader in a fun big budget Horror Film! A Great homage to the classic Lon Chaney JR. Classic!

4. AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON--Nice mix of Horror and Comedy, and the lovely Jenny Agutter!

5. THE HOWLING III--Most people hate this one too, but there is something about it that makes it one of my favorites. The Austrailian Werwolves make for an interesting twist on the story, and the I love the soundtrack to this film as well!

I also enjoyed all of THE HOWLING Sequels, except for the terrible PART 7, each one had something interesting to add to the series. Part 2 had Sybil Danning and Christopher Lee, Part IV had Romy Windsor, and John Hough at the helm of the film, Part VI had Vampires VS. Werewolves before UNDERWORLD! GINGER SNAPS is also one that I really like as well, an interesting twist on the Werewolf story.

Anyone ever see The Boy Who Cried Werewolf with Kerwin Matthews? It made quite an impact on me when I saw it as a child, cheesy but fun.

I never liked Silver Bullet and A Company of Wolves bored me to tears. Mission Code Z is right that Wolfen isn't a werewolf film per-se, but it is one of my favorite wolf films and would have made my top 5 if it would have been allowed.

So DOG SOLDIERS seems to be liked by some. I'll have to check it out. Give me a heads up on the plot.

It's about British soldiers on a training mission in the woods, and yep.... they run into some strange creatures. They end up shacking up in a house and that's when the fun begins.

It's a very good movie, and real cheap on DVD.

THE HOWLING is one of the worst films I have ever seen, and I really struggled to sit through it once :(

Brotherhood of the Wolf

Although I love this movie, I don't think it's considered a "werewolf" movie. It was just some sort of beast or mutated lion from africa or something.

Right, but that fact isn't made clear until the end of the movie, so I actually consider it a werewolf movie, a technicality IMO, hence I'll make that exception.
