I have the old Anchor Bay tape and I've been holding out for a better DVD than the one they released. Any word on a new one coming soon? Or is there a more definitive version from other regions than the U.S.? And what about Tenebre?

There are also some even newer versions. For example, the version from the Argento Japanese boxset is taken from a high def transfer.

I'd post in the Euro Horror forum.

Funny you bring this up.I was just thinking about ordering all the Argento dvd,s that i need to complete my collection. And that's all but Suspiria.I have had these on my wish list for year's now but have just held out.I bet the minute i do order,Blue underground will release them all.So i just dont know what to do.
On another note: I cant find a one in Best buy,Suncoast etc..The only place to get them around here is the net.

Just go for the AB DVD... while it's not anamorphically enhanced, it's still a nice transfer and will suffice until BU decides to re-release the films. Just try not to spend TOO much money on it though... I spent $30 on Tenebre at a convention because I was so desperate to have it. Needless to say, although it's a fantastic movie, I was ripped off. :(

And what about Tenebre?I have the integral and uncut version (http://www.xploitedcinema.com/dvds/dvds.asp?title=651)by Dutch company Japan/Italian Shock.Picture quality isn't that good though.Pretty sure the AB version looks better,I don't know. But it's complete and that's what matters. And the Medusa disc has Italian audio only.
For Tenebre I recommend the Dutch release by A-Film (http://www.freerecordshop.com/pages/productview.asp?productid=438783).It's complete AND uncut. It has all the scenes that were missing from other versions.Plus it has better image quality than the AB.
But being the Argentophile that I am I'll wait for the BU discs and buy them all again!http://horrordvds.com/vb3forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Ryan speaks the truth here
If you can get the AB versions at a price that is reasonable to you, go for it.
True, the releases of Tenebrae and Phenomena are not "complete", but in reality they're only missing some short scenes of dialogue. The violence is completely intact, and the cuts were made due to print damage, not any kind of editorial trimming.
If you have a Laserdisc player, you can pick up the Roan editions (which AB ported directly) fairly cheap. Since the DVDs are not anamorphic, you wouldn't be losing too much in way of picture quality.
Let's just say that these are among the favorite movies in my collection, and I have no immediate plans to upgrade.

I'd go for the cheap Dutch DVD by A-Film. Note that the Dutch 'integral version' is by Italian Shock and it stinks. The A-Film version looks better than Anchor Bay's and it's anamorphic too. For screenshot comparisons, have a look over here (http://www.cinema-extreme.com/wforum/viewtopic.php?t=184&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0).

Damn, I am so disapointed. Going through that Tenebrae link, that Japanese release looks stunning. But then, as noted in the text, suddenly the color scheme goes awry, and some scenes appear to be totally ruined :(
Close then, but no cigar. Yet it was VERY close dammit.

You are right, that Japan release is absolutely STUNNING... particularly with that screenshot of the trees. The AB release's transfer pales in comparison, IMO. :(

Creepers is the Dario Argento approved cut of Phenomena.
I believe you are wrong. Creepers is a basterdized version of Phenomena (originally released in the U.S.), with alot of cuts. Phenomena is the Argento approved version (released by Anchor Bay etc.), and the long integral version is just a longer version of Phenomena. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong please.

Any version missing any scenes is cut IMHO.
Why is the supposedly uncut version of A-Film called Creepers anyway?
Just to confuse us?

Yeah, I disagree with the idea that any version with mising scenes is cut. I want what the Director wanted me to have. Sometimes they change their minds, mostly not. But if they did change their mind, then that's the most legitimate version for me.

I really don't know why A-Film calls their version Creepers, it's the same version as Anchor Bay's. Maybe they needed another title to avoid confusion because there allready was another Dutch DVD available under the Phenomena title (the integral version). But of course it's still confusing because Creepers usually refers to another version than the one they released

The only version I have seen is the Creepers one, and I bought it long long ago at a video store sale. And yeah, I can tell its been cut. It runs at only 85-90 mins. I bought it like four years before the invention of DVD.

I was browsing eBay and apparently Legacy has released Creepers on DVD in Region 1. Fullscreen as far as I can tell and in the $5.99 area. I still don't believe that Anchor Bay's version of Phenomena is what Dario wanted. Someone made that claim on another message board ages ago and it's become accepted as fact. Phenomena was released theatrically in Italy at 116 minutes... which is why the DVD is 116 minutes. The violence is not all in tact and all of the minor cuts (which seem to be for running time alone) leave all of the transitions very awkward. I wouldn't even call them minor. Some of the things the characters do in these small cuts are truer to Argento's style than the random trimming done to the Anchor Bay version. I'd like to see Blue Underground release it (and get a hold of the full English track because it does exist...), but who the hell knows with them?
