I was lucky enough to pick up Rose Red on dvd for $6.99!!! When it was on TV, I only saw about 10 minutes of one part....so i bought it pretty much blind and DAMN was i surprised! It was a little gem in my opinion...I thought the story was great and the acting was superb. I also found it creepy, which is so rare for me because nothing really gets to me horror-wise.

Not really a spoiler, but...

the little girl ghost walking through the house with a disfigured arm was VERY unnerving especially

anyone else like this movie?

I really enjoyed it as well. Despite having Julian Sands in it I thought the cast was really solid for a made for tv miniseries. While not being the most original subject matter ever I think that Stephen King managed to spruce things up enough to make it his own and really load the thing up with atmosphere. In stores I've seen the case for the sequel, The Diary of Ellen Rimbaur (sp?), but never had the nerve to give it a go. Has anyone seen it? Is it worth a watch?

I really liked this one too. For a TV miniseries it was quite disturbing at times and the atmosphere was appropriate for a haunted house flick. I wouldn't compare it to my favorites The Changeling or The Legend Of Hell House ... but still an excellent effort.

The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer (Prequel-Sequel) isn't nearly as good. It's movie length, lower production values, the plot isn't as suspenseful, the atmosphere isn't as haunting, the acting isn't as good, etc.

They also change some facts of the story in The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer, like the suicide of John Rimbauer's partner. It was played out differently in Rose Red. They have a two pack of both films at Walmart for 13 bucks.

I did like Rose Red alot also, but i did not care a lot about the prequel. I felt everything was just explained all right in Rose Red, and they should have kept it that way. It's not that it was horrible (the prequel), but not something to remember...

I thought this made for T.V movie was quite good which surprised me, i like Julian Sands in Doctor and the Devils and Gothic.

When I was just a young lad I would watch The Warlock and, slightly later, Boxing Helena and enjoy them both, but after not having seen either in some time I revisited the two and found myself absolutely dumbfounded by just how bad of an actor he is, especially in Boxing Helena. At least in Warlock he wasn't really required to do much, and I suppose he was fairly menacing in a sort of homo-erotic eurotrash sort of way, but damn, I actually found myself laughing at just how bad he was in Boxing Helena.

I think Boxing Helena was meant to be campy.
I wouldn't say JS is the world's greatest actor, but he's been pretty good in some pretty good films (Gothic, The Killing Fields)...

I enjoyed ROSE RED.While not unlike THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE and THE HAUNTING,it worked pretty well for a miniseries.For the record,I like Julian Sands,but since Argento's PHANTOM OF THE OPERA,I can't shake the image of him putting rats in his pants in mock ecstasy.Not exactly the image you'd want on a lunchbox.A board game perhaps ....

I just couldn't get into Rose Red. The first half seemed cool, the whole back story and such, but the whole digital ghost counter was just too much for me. But if I saw it for a bit more than the cost of a rental I'd probably pick it up.

Are we talking about the same Rose Red here?? heh ....my god i thought it was one of the worst things ive seen in a long time, almost to the point of unintentional laughter...but then i did pick it up cheap in a sale too so its not like i lost out much!...No sorry have to disagree, one of the worst Stephen King based TV series!

Julian Sands IS a great actor when he's given a good part.
He is always great in every Mike Figgis movie I've seen (including One Night Stand, Timecode & Leaving Las Vegas) and he is also great in James Ivory's Room with a View.
However he appears in tons of garbage every year. Boxing Helena is a very bad movie and Warlock is indeed supposed to be campy anyway.

Rose Red ain't that bad Slinker. It is made for TV (never a plus) but it has it's creepy moments.

Bought Rose Red a few days ago and must say I was very impressed. Loved all the actors (although Nancy Travis did go a bit over the top at the end ... but I like over the top ...) and the look of the film. Very atmospheric and at times creepy.

The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer is very good. It was a prequel to Rose Red, and it came out about a year after Rose Red did. I have both Diary of Ellen Rimbauer and Rose Red on DVD. Diary I purchased used at Blockbuster, and purchased Rose Red Brand New. I recommend both of them. Watch Diary of Ellen Rimbauer first, then Rose Red.
