This does it, i hate Hollywood with a passion. A remake of one of the best horror films ever made, very big mistake. First it was the Evil Dead and now this, i hope this does not happen. Hollywood has gone crazy these days with remakes, and not with original crappy films but classics. You can never remake a classic, the original is and always will be the classic one so why remake it.

Not a huge fan of the original, so I don't feel any affinity with it. Remake away on this one..... (I wish I could more consistent with regard remarks, but hey, what can you do).

Nothing surprises me anymore. Hollywood has officially run out of ideas. Obviously Halloween’s next.
IMO The Exorcist is one of the best films ever made period. And should have won more Oscars then it did. The only way the remake would top the original is if it won best picture and I doubt that's going to happen. So why remake it.

Yes it's official Hollywood has gone down the toilet, not even a plunger can save Hollywood with these remakes. I won't be surprised if one year that Hollywood will remake Citizen Cain, Casablanca, Gone with the Wind ( hope this does'nt happen but with Hollywood you can never tell ), i wonder what these directors of the originals think of all these remakes of there own films.

Remakes have pretty much existed since the beginnings of film. My feeling is that remakes generally don't detract from their predecessors unless they're better.
DOTD '04 was a dumb idea, IMHO, but I don't really feel that it impacts Romero's original masterpiece at all. Still an all-time classic. I'd say the same for Psycho '99 and Jan de Bont's atrocious The Haunting remake.
Besides, I think films that are from literary sources, such as The Exorcist, and two of the above named, are always likely candidates for remakes. Look at Vanity Fair and how many times that story has been filmed. Hollywood is just doing what it's always done, putting it's money where there is money to be made. If the public likes a story once, chances are they might like it again.
Just my two cents. Just thought I should play devil's advocate since no one had yet. ;)

Bad idea all around, especially since Exorcist IV was really nothing special. The Exorcist is one of my top horror films, I will avoid seeing the remake for fear of ruining my memories of it. I wonder what William Peter Blatty would think of this?

Shit, why don't they just remake Star Wars? Well, I guess Lucas sorta does that on his own...never mind.
I think this one may well flop pretty badly, though, because it seems like the original just doesn't cast a spell over a lot of younger viewers.

Wasn't the Exorcist prequel a flop? What makes them think this will be a such a profit machine?
Because the studio is run by a bunch of retarded monkeys on speed.

with all the remakes in the works how much longer before a remake/reimaging of The Toxic Avenger?

Oh geez... It's one thing to make remakes of some movies that aren't exactly classics, but The Exorcist? What's next...The Godfather?
Is Hollywood that devoid of original ideas these days? Why don't the hotshots in Hollywood simply go to a bookstore, read some good horror books...and buy the rights to develop an original screenplay!

true, they been remake things in the past, but not at this rapid rate! there was maybe one or two a year, but int he last 5 years, there seem to be 10 a year! and some of the sources arent even 10 years old!

It had to happen, they couldn't resist it.
I'm reminded of a Saturday Night Live news story from a season or so ago.
"It has been announced the Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck will be starring in a remake of CASABLANCA.The producers say that they hope the new film will appeal to people who liked the original CASABLANCA but wished it had been TERRIBLE".

The Maltese Falcon (1931)
Satan Met A Lady (1936)
The Maltese Falcon (1941)
...all movie adaptions of the Dashiell Hammet novel, three within ten years, but the one considered the classic wasn't the first or only version to be filmed. Just look at how many more movies of the very same story were filmed subsequently... and I don't think anyone can dispute that the Bogart version is still king.
The Exorcist franchise may be in the toilet, but it's still a "brand name" from which the studio can still squeeze some dough. Doesn't really matter if the last one tanked, they'll eventually recoup their investment and turn some kind of profit on it because it's called "Exorcist."
A good many of the remakes suck. Let them suck... I think it will only make film fans return to the originals again and again.

"Jim *Cash*" - yes, that about covers it.
I wonder when the first Hollywood murder of a remaking hack/executive, by a film fan pushed to desperation, is going to happen? Hopefully soon.

"Titmouse! Hehehehe!"
- Look, there's a tufted titmouse.
- Really? A big titmouse?
- A _really_ big titmouse.
- Man, just look at the size of that titmouse!
- That is one humongous titmouse.
- You think I could grab the titmouse?
- Sure, it's fun to grab the titmouse.

Ahem... wait a second. I am now beginning to suspect that this is - hopefully - just a joke. Not because of Dakota Fanning (that would probably happen, in fact), but because of this:
Jim (ANACONDA) Cash has apparently already completed a first-draft script on what is inevitably being described as a "reimagining" rather than a straight remake.
...and this:
Jim Cash (I)
Date of birth
17 January 1941
Boyne City, Michigan, USA
Date of death
25 March 2000
East Lansing, Michigan, USA. (intestinal ailment)

But is there a Jim Cash II?
Maybe it'll be written by a reimagining of Jim Cash?
Oh, Hollywood!

I hope it is only a rumor, as a remake would be dumb.Talking about The Exorcist Redux version, don't tell me there thinking about putting in new scenes like that crappy version of Night of the Living Dead and the Star Wars trilogy ( we got George Lucas to thank for that ).
What does Redux mean anyways?, does it mean where they put new senes in.

Since this is being penned by Jim Cash then it COULD be REALLY good!
As MrVess pointed out (good catch!) he's dead and all, he's probably writing it from hell! He was responsible for Anaconda.
Or maybe he's taken posession of someone and can write from first hand experience...
redux?
Didn't they already come out witha crappy remix of the movie?

I think they should just give Exorcist II a theatrical rerelease. Hell, I'd be more likely to pay to see that one in the theater than I would be to pay for totally new film!
