You can retire those out of print Criterion and Anchor Bay DVDs of DEAD RINGERS, since Warner Brothers has just announced a new DVD of David Cronenberg's celebrated and cerebral twins feature for June 7th. Although still available in Canada through TVA (with all the Criterion extras), DEAD RINGERS will find its way to North American shelves through Warner in a new anamorphic transfer with additional supplements. Here are the specs:
1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen
Dolby Digital 5.1
Dolby Digital 2.0
Audio commentary with Jeremy Irons
Interviews with cast and crew
Dead Ringers Psychological Profiler
With a price tag of only $19.98, those who already own the Criterion may want to spring for this version to get the film in an improved anamorphic transfer as well as new supplemental material. It is a shame there is not a second disc with the rest of the licensed Criterion extras, as that would make the set definitive. Still, this new disc should tide over Cronenberg fans until his A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE makes its way to theaters this fall.

Excellent news. I've been wanting this title for quite sometime and now things are looking good.

I'll be double dipping for the new transfer. Cronenberg's films are more than worth it to me. Definitely keeping my Criterion too though. Now, if only someone would put out a SE of Crash already.

Even though I didn't care for this film, I'll probably spring for it anyhow. Too bad there's not a Cronenberg commentary on the disc. :(

Cronenberg's finest film IMO, and well worth buying again for a new transfer and a couple different extras.

This version probably won't be available in Canada. The TVA disc is selling for 34.99-38.99 as is the Naked Lunch.

I also will double-dip as all I have is the Region 2 Carlton Silver Collection release which contains no special features. Cronenberg is my one of my favorite directors (as he is for probably most people on this site). I wish Criterion could get the rights to distribute Crash, that would be the shit. I heard History Of Violence got pushed back to November to garner Oscar buzz.

Cronenberg + an Oscar would be too awesome :D

I'll probably pick it up for the anamorphic transfer.

Heck Yes! First a New Zealandor then a Canadian. Wouldn't life be grand?

What extras were on the Criterion one that aren't on this newest release from WB?

conceptual designs of the gynocological instruments for mutant women and a Cronenberg commentary I believe.

Yeah, I'll probably pick it up for the anamorphic print, but I won't be letting go of my Criterion either.

Hmmmmm. I'll be buying it... but they didn't go with the preferred aspect ratio, which is a pity (1,85:1 instead of 1.66:1)..... oh well, I'll have my Criterion as well.. :)

Tempted by this, but will probably just stick with my Criterion since it won't get watched much.
Definitly rent or library it to hear the Irons commentary unless a bunch of reviews and posts say it's not worth it.
