What is the difference between each side on this DVD? I finally got around to watching it last night, it's a double-sided disc, with no difference between them?

Do you mean the old Trimark DVD edition? All of their early DVD's looked like double-sided discs, but I think only one side has any actual movie data on it.

Hm, I think it's a Trimark. On mine though, it looks like a double-sided disc, and it *is* a double sided disc. I just couldn't tell the difference between them.....

Hmm... well if it's an old Trimark disc, it should have a very thin white circular ring near the center hole with the movie imprinted on it. I did recently buy an old Trimark DVD under the newer Lions Gate banner, and it still had the old type of Trimark disc presentation though. Most companies don't do that anymore unless it really is a double-sided disc...with a recent exception being Universal's Battlestar Galactica 2004 miniseries on DVD.

That's it, with the white circular ring. Both sides play though. Wierd. I assumed one was widescreen and the other 4:3, but that wasn't the case.

Weird, I'll have to pull mine out soon and see if the other side plays too. I don't think I ever even bothered trying to play the other side on any of the old Trimark discs...

I tried playing the other side on Love & A .45 back when I was new to dvd.
It said "wrong side dumbass" (or something close to that). Weird about DOA.

Love & A .45 and The Stoned Age were two of the first DVD's I ever purchased! Okay, now I gotta go pop Love in on the flip side and see this...

If you enjoyed Dead Alive, I recommend you also then check out a movie called THE BONEYARD. I think it really compares in alot of ways. :D

What's the best DVD out there on this film?

There's a R2 version under the original title Braindead that runs fully uncut, but Jackson has stated in interviews that his preferred cut of the film is the R1 edition out here. Still, if you want more gore (like myself) pick it up on Amazon UK's website or go to another supplier like Diabolik, Xploited or Flesh Wound Video.

Is there anything on the other side of The Stoned Age disc? Trimark really bunged that one up, by the way. You lose half the movie with the way the picture is framed (although, I love the commentary, and yeah, I'm thankful the film even exists on DVD).

There's nothing on the flipside of my disc, it just reads as blank.

I wondered about this when I got the Trimark dvd of Dead Alive also. I believe I tried it before and the other side of the dvd plays as well.

There are 4 cuts of this film!

The dreaded R rated US version, cut to all hell, avoid at all cost, unless you always wanted to see Dead Alive, without the gore :nervous:

The unrated Dead Alive US version, the version most of you have seen, Peter Jackson prefers this cut.

Brain Dead world version, the version most people outside of the US have seen, more gore and a different edit than the US version (some scenes run longer or shorter)

Brain Dead Japanese version, this version was release only in Japan, it is even longer than the world version, theer are some extra stuff in here that isn't in any other version.

from the IMDB:

When the film was picked up for U.S. distribution, there was a delay when another company asked the distributor to change the film's title so as to avoid confusion with another film of the same name (hence the "Dead Alive" title for the U.S. release). Director Peter Jackson decided to use the extra time to apply some additional spit and polish to the film, resulting in a new cut approximately seven minutes shorter than the original (97 minutes vs. 104 minutes). This cut premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and was eventually released in the U.S. (along with an emasculated, 85-minute R-rated version). Although the 104-minute version remains the most commonly seen (at least outside the U.S.), Jackson has gone on record as saying the 97-minute cut is his preferred version.
