It's about time Alone In The Dark gets a DVD release. I have faith that Image will give it the treatment it deserves.
I'm honestly a bit surprised this one doesn't get mentioned more often.

Any news on extras?
Last year when the title was first announced, it was said that Jack Sholder would be providing a commentary for Alone in the Dark. Don't know if they ever went through with it though.

I've been working with New Line / Image on these titles (along with others that have yet to be announced) and I'm sure fans will really be happy with them. While the ALONE IN THE DARK extras have already been mentioned, the specs for XTRO are a little unclear, so you will all be happy to know there are deleted scenes, an alternate ending, a pretty good stills collection (including never-before-seen behind-the-scenes photos) and a 17-minute featurette with the director that I produced titled XTRO XPOSED. It's a really fun watch and I'm pretty proud of it. It covers both XTRO 1+2 (which was initially supposed to be double-featured on this disc, but got postponed due to elements issues) and even briefly touches on part 3 (which is coming soon from Ventura). The new anamorphic print was pulled from New Line's negative, so saying it blows away the German DVD (which itself looked like bad VHS) is an understatement.

And here's the cover artwork for Alone in the Dark.

Shame on them for not going with the classic 1-sheet and VHS artwork. It was one of the all-time great pieces of slasher movie art.
Also, shame on them for not getting co-story writer Bob Shaye to do an audio commentary (the track he recorded for his own film Book of Love is great!) or at least an interview.
But still, a great little early 80's slasher that is a MUST-SEE for slasher fans.

Shame on them...
I can't believe you're complaining when the film is receiving such amazing treatment. You're getting a new anamorphic print from the original negative, several sound options, an audio commentary by the director, two featurettes, a big stills gallery and the trailer, all for a low price. I guess no matter what you do some people will still bitch...
They couldn't go with the original poster for the cover because a lot of chain stores wouldn't take it. Realistic blood is a big no-no. As for Bob Shaye, I don't believe he was interested. Notices were sent to the agents of Martin Landau and Jack Palance, but they never got back to us. I wanted to do a brief featurette with Tom Savini about his work on the dream sequence, but was unable to work something out. We also wanted to include the original screenplay as a DVD-Rom, but guild fees made it cost-prohibitive.
Nathaniel Thompson and I went as far out of our way as possible to make ALONE IN THE DARK and XTRO great discs for fans, and I think we succeeded. Hopefully it'll be appreciated and we didn't waste our time.

A bit touchy, I see. My apologies, Bruce. I wasn't complaining about what we have on the disc. My minor qualms (not complaints) were with the artwork and Shaye (as I'm a huge fan of Bob). Neither were make-or-break deals for the disc for me. Sorry if you mistook them as such.
About the cover...was there no way Image could've gone the reversible route? Media Blasters sometimes offers discs with reversible artwork (The Majorettes) and Critical Mass' Black Christmas Collector's Edition featured this as well. Present the new cover artwork as the "main" artwork for chain stores...on the reverse side, have the original poster art. Problem solved. Or, they could've gone the Columbia route with the Happy Birthday To Me insert being the original theatrical art.
And yeah, cover art (in the grand scheme of things) doesn't matter in the overall enjoyment of the disc. It's just nice to see the originals used whenever possible. Sometimes it matters, sometimes it doesn't. For instance, for Media Blasters' upcoming Girls Nite Out disc...I can't imagine what cover art they will use for the DVD, as that film NEVER had a decent poster/video box/etc. They'll probably just photoshop it (I mean, they can't do any worse, for sure).
I'm sure somewhere on the disc in the artwork gallery or lobby cards section that we'll get to see this great artwork for Alone in the Dark presented, though. Again, it wasn't a make-or-break deal for me in regard to buying the disc. Just wish the original cover poster art had been used. It's classic.

Do you mean the bloody axe in the foreground and the house in the background?
I find it hard to believe that this artwork was too gory for stores to carry. Maybe it was a rights issue with the original as well? I guess Bruce would know better than I. I'm still buying it regardless. I'm so thankful that these companies keep going out of their way to give us some manner of SE on these classic films.

The poster was great:

http://www.impawards.com/1982/posters/alone_in_the_dark_ver2.jpg
But it's understandable that right now it's easier to sell this movie showing Landau, Pleasance & Palance on the cover.
You know, with a couple of .jpg files, using Photoshop, and having a color printer you can make your own custom covers very easily. Add a scanner and you're set for anything.

Yeah, the original VHS cover would have been nice, I think. I never could quite understand the changing of cover art. And, with the reversible cover art now, there's really no excuse not to include it. But, at least they didn't make it as bad as Happy Birthday to Me...
I think the biggest thing about why we fans get so uptight over cover art is because with horror flicks the cover art made us want to rent/see the film in the first place way back in the day and it's a nostalgia thing. It's all part of the genre.

Has anyone tried to pre-order these on Amazon yet? Every time I put them in my cart they stay there for a bit and then an alert tells me that the item I chose does not exist in their inventory. :eek2:
