Well heres a mixed viewing experience to be sure. I saw this....what 15-18 years ago on cut VHS.
Well now it's on DVD and whilst it lookes a lot better than I remembered it's not as horrifying as I remembered. Just a lot of gooey f/x's repeated in various locations.
Mind you that one scene with the drunken girl was pretty disturbing......shades of Romero to be sure.
Some great one-liners too!! How funny was that doorman at the restaraunt???
"Suck my Dick??........it's dripping down the stairs!!!"

Do you get the feeling that any rare or non popular movie that is coming out in 2006(and beyond) on regular dvd will need to be snatched up quick. Because once Blu-Ray and HD come out thats it, they will probably never see the light of day again. I see a lot of no longer in print messages from retailers in our future.

I don't think HD will be a silver bullet to kill everything off. I get the feeling though that "rare or non popular" movies will continue on SD DVD for quite awhile. There's no real reason why companies like Brentwood or Ventura would go HD, they don't have the source material and if they did it probably would look even worse on HD.
But companies like Synapse Films and Blue Underground have been preparing for HD for quite awhile now. These companies are ready to go. But a company in the middle like Something Weird I'm not as sure about. What might even happen is that movies will be ported over to the HD era discs in standard definition. Down the road when cost become lower you may see those Brentwood 5-disc sets with 10 movies still in standard definition but on one single HD-DVD for example.
SD DVD will eventually be dropped, but not in 2006 or 2007. I'd hold off on buying movies expecting a later HD release, but I wouldn't snatch up certain DVDs because they'll be "obsolete."

I doubt HD-DVD and Blu-Ray will pick up THAT quickly. Remember, it takes a while for things to catch on. Not everyone will be able to afford to run out and buy an HD player and HD-DVDs the second they hit the shelves. Regular DVDs will be around for a long time to come.

I haven't really been paying much attention but I imagine the new HD DVD and Blu Ray players will be able to downconvert the video for TVs that are not HD just like my HD satellite receiver does. If that is true then they can convert to just putting out movies on HD discs much easier and sooner. That will force people to buy HD-DVD players or Blu Ray players to be able to use the discs even though you may not own an HDTV right now.
Does anyone know for certain if the HD DVD or Blu Ray players will be backwards compatible with regular dvds? If so then that will make it extremely easy to quit making regular dvd players and force people to buy the new HD machines.
I am 99.9% sure they will all be backwards compatible

Exactly. Although VHS is hard to find they are around. The jump from DVD to HD-DVD or Blu-Ray is not going to be as big as the jump from VHS to DVD. For me, I am not going to get into HD until standard DVD is obsolete or the prices drop dramatically.
I think we are at a point in technology where everything is changing too much and the consumers will fold. I remember a few years ago that component was the best way to hook up your DVD player and run it at 480p. Now it is HDMI is the best w/ a HD upconverter. Tommorow it will be something else. When does it end? Probably when people realize they will have to rebuy their collection to watch them in "true HD" or when they find out their new DLP tv or whatever is out of date or HDMI is not the best connection anymore so... "time to spend thousands more or you will be left behind".
I want to throw up.

don't forget guys , I'm talking about non popular dvds and rare titles. I'm not talking about Die Hard being taken off the shelf or not produced anymore for standard dvd.
Does anybody have any idea how many hundreds and hundreds of titles are out of print on dvd? , never to be seen again? And thats now with just standard dvd. (whether it be because of rights issues or not selling well)Its been going on for years. Now that Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are coming do you really think any dvd that was on the fence of becoming a dvd title will ever see the light of day? And any title out there that just came out thats not selling real well, is going to be continued to be produced. I doubt it. Thats what I meant by "needed to be snatched up quick" Even if Blu-Ray wasn't invented, there would still be titles going out of print every day. Blu-Ray and HD-dvd just make this happen a little faster.
here's an example of and 80's movie: (not horror) Rad has yet to released on dvd. 90% of dvd consumers probably never heard of the movie nor would buy it if it was available. But lets say if it was released in the next 3 months and it only sold a small amount(mostly to diehard fans) I'll bet you anything that in the next year , less and less retail store would have this title to sell, and soon it would not be produced. let alone ever see an Blu-Ray or HD-DVD release.

I can totally see baggio's point. If the "minors" can't break into the HD arena for years (or ever!), what's to say that the big studios are going to ever release the unknown gems that we love so dearly??? You think Sony is going to come to our aid? How about Universal? What if there are titles that Blue Underground and Anchor Bay just aren't interested in releasing, we just won't get them?
Of course, that's me in Panic Mode. Honestly, as with DVD, everything will get mixed up for a while before smaller speciality titles get attention, and then start to even out--just as the next level of technology is preparing to be unleashed on a salivating public.
Who knows? RAD may never see the light of day....
There are TONS of RAD dvds on E-Bay. I don't think they are legit, but there they are.

They are all bootlegs, and the quality varies. So far there's no official RAD DVD that has been released anywhere in the world to my knowledge. There was some seller on ebay claiming he imported some from Hong Kong, but they're still DVD-R's of questionable origin.
For me, RAD is probably the single most desired DVD that has not yet been released. Me and my friends (a freestyle group in the late-80's) used to religiously watch it over and over again.
There are so many crappy movies out on DVD, and movies such as this (and still many others!) that are still waiting in the wings!

I'd think some movies would be a waste on HD-DVD. Besides, like I said, VHS is still around today, so I highly doubt DVDs are going anywhere for a few years atleast. And titles go OOP no matter what format they're on.
betterdan
01-19-2006, 11:44 PM
Why would they be a waste on HD-DVD? Film that the movies were originally shot on is way higher resolution than HD, well maybe not super 8, so that could only bring it closer to being film like.
I do agree though that regular dvds probably will be around for a while but HD will prevail.
Hopefully they will force people into buying the new HD DVD or Blu Ray players and quit making regular dvd players altogether once the prices come down some. That is if they are capable of downconverting like I mentioned earlier.
Mortis
01-20-2006, 12:03 AM
They have a hard time finding a decent print of some of the more obscure shit, so I don't see how putting it out on HD-DVD over DVD would benefit them. I'd think it'd expose the shittiness even more.

So in that case would a vhs tape look better than a dvd on those same movies since a dvd would expose more shittiness than a vhs?
The film they are doing the transfer from may not look the best but it would be higher quality than dvd (maybe on some movies not a whole lot better) so HD DVD would just make it look closer to the actual film.
Mortis
01-20-2006, 12:12 AM
I never said a DVD would look better than an HD-DVD. I was saying that jumping up an to HD-DVD with those movies wouldn't benefit them enough. Look at some of the Brentwood shit. The only advantage to some of them being on DVD is the convenience of not having to have a VCR hooked up.
So in that case would a vhs tape look better than a dvd on those same movies since a dvd would expose more shittiness than a vhs?

01-20-2006, 12:24 AM
I never said that you said a dvd would look better thann HD DVD Mortis but any quality improvement is good in my eyes.
Brentwood dvds are crap because of the way they transfer them and the shitty sources they have. The films themselves though could benefit from a better transfer from any half way decent source materials. Add that together with HD DVD and the presentation would be much improved.
Now if you are talking about putting Brentwoods mostly vhs transfers straight onto HD DVD then yes it won't look any better than dvd but I am referring to film transfers here.
I hope you are not of the mind set that since some companies put out crappy transfers onto dvd then there is no sense in upgrading to a better format just because those crappy dvds won't look any better. We have a long way to go before any home video format comes close to equalling film and I would rather continue on that journey getting closer to the true source material rather than becoming stagnant and sticking with inferior equipment just because of a company like Brentwood.
Mortis
01-20-2006, 12:34 AM
No, but you asked if a VHS would look better than a DVD. Same difference, right? I'd love for all of my favorite movies to come out in super deluxe HD-DVD/Blue-ray goodness, but that's highly unlikely. Just because they have the format available doesn't mean they're going to take full advantage of it. I doubt much will change. We'll still sit around and wait for movies to get released and continue to bitch about how shitty some of them look.

Don't worry Mortis they will come out with better transfers. Hell a lot of the movies we buy now already have HD transfers just like Street trash in this thread (which has gotten off topic) A lot of people thought it was highly unlikely that some of their favorite weird horror movies would make it to dvd yet they did.
Some movies will still look shitty of course. No matter what format they are on there will always be shitty companies putting out shitty merchandise but that shouldn't deter someone from seeking the best they can get.

I don't mind it. It's not the greatest cover in the world, but the single disc cover doesn't do the movie justice.

I personally like the new cover. It's got that neon rainbow effect that the gore has in the movie.

Here's a look at the cover for the new double disc coming out in October. Not sure if I like it quite yet. The single disc cover was pretty sweet.
just curious, where did you get that cover art? Even their own website dosen't have that yet. And I can't find the cover anywhere.
Your on the inside?:D

I'm glad that my holding off on buying the single disc is paying off. I don't have a problem with the new art. It could end up being flashier than it looks on a computer screen. Maybe some reflective green goo or something. Either way it's going to be mine in Oct.

Argh, I just bought the single disc, watched it for the first time, and I have to say it's one of the best cult films I've seen.... I'd want to double dip on the 2 disc set, but maybe I'll wait for the next gen disc to upgrade.

I got the single disc version a while back and have no problems upgrading. I love this movie!!! I am on a little quest actually. When I was a little kid I saw so many horror/trash/cult movies featured on posters at the local rental place, and on USA back when it was an awesome station that played pretty much anything. Of course I couldn't see any of them because I either couldn't stay up late enough to see them on USA (though I did manage to do so every once in a while) or my mom wouldn't rent those kinds of movies for me. Then when I got to the age where I could rent what I wanted, 99% of these movies were unavailable on VHS thanks to the Blockbusters of the world.
Anyway, thanks to DVD and awesome companies like Synapse I am slowly getting caught up on these movies.
I remember seeing clips of Street Trash on a Sat or Sun morning on a show they had on USA that basically just ran clips of weird/trashy movies. They showed the penis catch scene pretty much in its entirety, as well as the scene where the bum melts on the toilet. I clearly remember the sound effects in that scene and when I finally got to see the movie it brought back a lot of memories. :D

The picture quality on the single DVD is great, and you get a couple of snazzy Tenefly Viper stickers that won't be in the 2 disc release.

I figured that it would be a good disc since everything I have from Synapse is incredible especially Brain Damage. I just put that in tonight and I am still floored over the transfer. Free stickers are always cool too.
Any date for the 2 disc release?

From Fangoria.com:
Fango got the first details on the specs for Synapse Films’ two-DVD set of the cult gorefest STREET TRASH, along with the cover art. Arriving September 26, the package will include an anamorphic 1.78:1 transfer from the original camera negative with Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and original 2.0 mono audio tracks, plus the following extras:
• Two audio commentaries featuring producer Roy Frumkes and director James Muro
• The Meltdown Memoirs, an all-new two-hour documentary on the history and making of STREET TRASH
• Muro’s original 16mm short version of STREET TRASH
• The long-lost, never-before-seen STREET TRASH promotional teaser
• Behind-the-scenes still gallery
• Original theatrical trailer
The documentary is further described thusly: “Over four years in production, Roy Frumkes’ The Meltdown Memoirs is more than a ‘making of’ documentary; rather, it is an intensely personal, expansive impression of the STREET TRASH years, and what preceded and followed them. Bolstered by a haunting score, dozens of interviews with cast, crew and other genre figures and rare footage detailing the cult classic’s evolution, this is a uniquely eccentric, sometimes shocking experience from the creator of DOCUMENT OF THE DEAD. Features an interview with director Bryan Singer [SUPERMAN RETURNS and X-MEN, and a PA on STREET TRASH], an appearance by the New York ‘subway vigilante’ Bernard Goetz and—almost—the entire cast of STREET TRASH!”
Fango got a sneak peek at Meltdown Memoirs and can attest that is indeed one of the most revelatory and surprising documentaries on the world of independent horror filmmaking ever produced. Retail price for the set will be $29.95. —Michael Gingold

Two nights ago, I saw Street Trash for the first time. I also saw the documentary Meltdown Memoirs. I really enjoyed the movie but I felt compelled to enjoy it, mainly because the writer/producer of Street Trash and director of Meltdown Memoirs sat right beside me at a screening. I really wish I had been a big fan of the movie.

Hellbilly
05-07-2007, 02:36 PM
The extended/unrated or director's cut runs about 11 minutes longer than the old unrated Lightning Video version, which I'm pretty sure was not edited for violence. I'm not sure if any extra gore was added to the longer cut though, but the shorter version certainly got things moving and had a tighter pacing.
I had to get used to the extra 11 minutes.

thought the extended version dragged abit, but other than that..i loved it! the scene with the black homeless guy in the grocery store was priceless!
