I thought Tartan in R2 were putting them out in the UK. Not sure if this is still happening or not, but if the masters are ready one suspects they're being shopped around....

to be more precise, it's the Green Cow label (like Shriek Show) that's releasing them. I was always jealous how other countries had cult labels (even Holland had Japan Shock and , sometimes, A-Film) but these peopel know how to do it. They have already released Hammer Horrors and some MGM-titles (like Kingdom Of The Spiders, Haunted Palace, Empire Of The Ants and The Premature Burial) and it's rumoured that they will also be releasing a lot of Godzilla-movies. Let's hope they continue with this! :D

Also a comparison between the VCI disc and this new one by EMS:

Most German reviews aren't really convincing but the difference between the two versions is obvious.

I just finally watched BARON BLOOD, after having it sit on my desk for over six months, and in doing so I have come to decide that this film progresses quite unevenly. The first half I found to be almost unbearably slow--snailing along at some pace perhaps deemed "plodding" in 1809--but it picks up towards the end. Bava's camera is shakey, sometimes even unsure, but in the final thirty minutes he unveils some nice tricks. For instance, I love the crucial game of Zoom Wars between little Nicoletta Elmi and the Baron's castle. The "early" split-screen shot with the medium's experience and vision also stands out. The film ended up being, to me, a formal exercise from Bava and his crew. The wagon-wheeled dollies, exaggerated zooms, and nearly-expressionistic lighting (e.g., Fraulein's run from the Baron through the city) make for a nice little presentation, especially when added to such wonderful nuggets of dialogue, like, "Come on, let's go wash up first, then you can go out and play in the garden." Ohh yeah, let's definitely be clean for a romp around in the dirt where plants are growing. Good idea.

In the end I find myself mildly impressed by BARON BLOOD, and yet not wholly fulfilled. The story is certainly not very original or compelling, but the visual flair with which the film is presented makes the latter portion an engaging watch. And a leggy Elke Sommer surely doesn't hurt the situation.

But yes, Image's R1 DVD surely could use some decent competition. The film is covered in grain/artifacts (?) and the audio is quiet in the background--I had to turn it way up just to hear the tinny, reverberated dialogue. Not too bad, but it absolutely leaves room for improvement.

Here's the first screencaps from Green Cow's Bay of Blood.I don't know if it's better or worse than the Image release though:

Apparently the audio is about the same as Image's release.Could well be they used that one as source.I hope I can find it cheap.
