Yeah these numbers are anoying really. In my oppinion the PG-13 horrors will eventually loose luster and at the same time cause the better horror movies to make less and less. People will just expect every movie to be The Grudge. I can tell the box office has somewhat gone downhill with all of these PG-13 horrors. This frusterates me because when it comes time for something potentially good like SAW2 people will be turned off and tired of horror.

I wish Land and Rejects would have been higher on that list.

The Amityville Horror was my fav out of this list.

Isn't it quite telling of America's taste when the worst movies are near the top?

this years numbers are much lower than previous years. For awhile, it seemed horror was making at least 50 million +, now it's a struggle to just make 30.

Maybe because the movies have been sucking so fucking hard that people won't shell out $8+ to see them.

I am disappointed to see so many of those being PG-13 shitfests, but anything that keeps horror alive as a viable commodity at the box office is ok with me. I do have to wonder how many people will rush back to the theatre for another dose of horror after suffering through assclown assemblages like Ring two (absolutely one of the worst sequels ever), boogeyman, and cursed. Us diehards will, but the general public? House of wax and devil's rejects should be topping that list by far.

The Devil's Rejects should've been much higher on that list. It's a movie you can watch over and over, and never get bored with. The Amityville remake, however, you can watch a couple of times or so and not worry about ever seeing it again.

Thats a pretty weak slate.I wonder if any upcoming releases are gonna make it look any better by years end

No surprises here. The crappiest shit always does the best. Case and point: Ring 2. Utter shit. Devil's Rejects fucking ruled and it didnt even break $20 mil.

*Update*

The Skeleton Key moved up one notch ... The Exorcism Of Emily Rose, The Fog & Cry_Wolf are new to the charts.
Even though not "horror" I also added Cronenberg's A History Of Violence since he's been doing ok at the box office.

Even though not "horror" I also added Cronenberg's A History Of Violence since he's been doing ok at the box office.

Actually Cronenberg had a very good run because it had a rather limited release of 1,340 theaters, much fewer theaters then even Land of the Dead (2,253). So I believe the per-screen average is very good on it ($6,047 average). Considering Universal seems pretty happy with Land of the Dead, I'm sure whoever owns A History of Violence is even happier as that has much better word of mouth that will pay off on the video sales and rental angle.

It's nice to see that Romero's straight laced horror beat of Wes Craven's horror attempt in the box office, even if Red Eye did better. Speaking of which, Red Eye had an onscreen average of $5,250. Cronenberg beat that out. :D

Yea, it's pretty cool Cronenberg doing good biz at the box office. Here's hoping New Line will give us a Special Edition of Crash when they put out A History Of Violence on DVD *fingers crossed*

In general, the one's higher on the list that made more money had heavier promotion and played more theaters than the one's at the bottom. That list doesn't take into account overseas totals either. In the end, it doesn't matter really how much a movie makes at the box office so much as how it does on DVD and how much of the production cost is recouped in the initial run. A movie like LAND OF THE DEAD can be a success making $20 mil domestically because it's Prod. budget was only $15 mil, while a movie like Constantine can bring in nearly four times as much and still be a box office flop. Success is a relative term.

*update*

Saw II cutting it's way into the top ten. $60m in two weeks, not bad.
New: Doom #13, Stay #22, and Three... Extremes #25

Looks like Emily Rose is running outta gas and won't beat Constantine. Cronenberg's A History Of Violence is still doing strong biz though :)

With an estimated budget of $4 million, Saw is cleaning up. Also, its 46 percent drop between week one and two is pretty good for a horror sequel too. I say it has a good chance of ending up as the number one horror movie of the year. We could do a hell of a lot worse.

It's all great news, imo. Sure I don't like all of those films, but just seeing all that horror being made is quite something.

Does anyone know if The Descent is gonna get a theatrical release here before the imminent domestic DVD release? It sure deserves to.
