some of the bigger index sites have horror categories. one that comes to mind is mininova.

Try www.dead-donkey.com. They're eMule/eDonkey specific, but they have a forum on their message board devoted to torrent. Updates with different titles are few and far between however.

Anyone know where there are some newsgroup tutorials? I've heard so many good things about newsgroups but never knew how to use them :(

It's a lot easier now than it used to be, 'cause there are "nzb" files which basically mean all you have to do is click and you can be downloading stuff, if you have a decent news server.

First thing you need is a news feed, your own ISP might have one, but chances are it won't be great and possibly won't carry these movies groups at all. You want one where all the multiple parts of the files are complete ("completion") and one where they stay on the server and are available to download for a long time ("retention").

I use http://www.newshosting.com/ , $14.95 a month for unlimited downloads and it has over 99% completion and about 30 day retention on all groups.

Then you need a newsreader program, which downloads the stuff for you. Usenet is basically a text only format, so binary files have to be encoded into text form and this makes them bigger. Also the max post size is fairly small so big images (like DVD's) have to be split into 1000's of small parts, so without a newsreader prog to make sense of all the bits + group them together it's almost impossible to do manually.

I use Grabit from http://www.shemes.com/ , but there are others. Grabit has a built in usenet search which can be handy for finding stuff.

What we used to have to do was update the headers (which could take HOURS, for a busy group on a server with good retention) from groups we wanted to download from, eg. alt.binaries.multimedia.horror, then browse through all the stuff and download the parts we needed. Say for a divx movie maybe 40-50 parts of 15MB each. Then you use winrar or winzip or whatever to unpack it and finally you'd have your avi movie or iso dvd image or whatever.

Due to how usenet posts spread ("propagate") sometimes a few small parts are missing from your news server, so PAR (parity) files were created to allow you to re-create the missing bits by download extra .par files. If your download is complete and unzips OK then you won't need them, but otherwise you have to download a few extra PAR files as well, enough to make up for the bits you've missed. Then you use QuickPAR from http://www.quickpar.org.uk/ to repair the complete download.

Anyways, nowadays it's a bit easier are there are sites with NZB files which basically mean you don't have to update all the headers and browse for the stuff you want, they work kinda like torrent links and once you click to open them it'll start up grabit and go straight to your news server and automatically start pulling down the correct files.

I use http://www.newzbin.com/ as it's the best source of nzb files + usenet post listings I've found. You have to subscribe to download nzb files but it's really cheap (50 cents a week!), then you can just browse the movie listings for what you want, click the "Get message id's" button and it all happens automatically. If you have a decent news server like news hosting then 99% of the time the stuff comes straight down with no missing parts, but sometimes you have to use QuickPAR to repair some missing bits.

Sounds complicated, but once you've done it a few times it's pretty easy...

Newsgroups take a little while to figure out. But once you get the hang of it, you'll see that it's much better than torrents or P2P.

OMG! "Let's Scare Jessica to Death" was posted on Sept. 27th but I can't see it in my server application. Does anyone know how I can get stuff from that date?

BTW, this film needs a DVD release but it's never going to happen.
