Uncut -- Or is it really???

The question I have that in these days are all these "uncut" movies really uncut? Aren't you tired of just about every DVD out on the shelves says uncut , unrated, etc... And what I mean by that is that just about every horror movie or even comedy for that matter has a unrated dvd. Take a look at American Pie #3 for example. They had a "unrated version" which all it added was (hold on to your hats kids) a couple more minutes of nudity. Breast shots to be exact. Big fn' deal. They could have easliy put that in the theatrical release. Its more like like they wanted to shave off scenes to reduce running time. Or cut scenes because they were too stupid.

And how about Saw? How many versions are they going to put out. There is really nothing new to show. Just a marketing ploy to promote the new film.

Just about every movie today the companies cut scenes on purpose so they can say they have a "special edition" version on dvd to sell. Nobody is making anything shocking to try to be different. Years ago films got away with a lot more then now. But in the 80's there was a big crack down on what they could show. Just about everything gets thru the MPAA now a days because film makers have been "trained" for years to know what they can and can't get away with. They don't even try anymore. They goriest film out today is tame compared to yesteryear. Lets see some filmmaker with balls get a theatrical release with a scene with a decent throat slit. Not gonna happen. So they don't even try. If they did, it would get trimmed down, THEN they could put it out on dvd.


My opinion is that a true uncut films are the ones that have been on VHS for years as rated R. Then they are finally given a uncut treatment on DVD. Showing things whether it be gore, nudity, sex,.... that would give it a X rating. Funny how big stores like Best Buy have shelves full of these "X rated" dvds that just about anybody with cash can buy. I think its bull. these movies aren't really "rated X", they would never sell them. Think about it its not ok for the theater but any 15 yr old with cash can buy it easliy in the store. These movies just have a few extras added in that they "call" unrated to make them more enticing. Give me "My Bloody Valentine" uncut, now that would be an uncut film. Aftermath uncut DVD dosen't thrill me because that movie was always totally "uncut" for years on vhs. Actually all these foreign films like that and Haute Tension have almost no restrictions while making them. So it isn't really right to call them a uncut version. Only if they added scenes because of long running times. (and by scenes I mean, talking... not gore shots)

Heres a good ex. of an uncut movie -Texas Chainsaw #3 The uncut version definitely shows gore that no way would make it past the MPAA. And I'm not talking about different endings or stuff like that (thats called Extras)

-Current movies should be called Special Editions (which some do) not Unrated and Uncut. Because I think its bull. These scenes that make it unrated wre cut just because of running time cut down.
-Any "straight to video" releases should have NO extra titles attached. Considering they have just about no retrictions or a theatrical release to compare. Any extras should be obvious, like behind the scenes interviews, storybords, etc... So no need to call it "Special Edition"
-But older movies that had a theatrical and vhs releases wtih gore, sex, ... cut out. to avoid an X rating. Should be given the honor of Unrated. So you now what your getting.

I think I'm going to make a concerted effort to do so. I know I'm missing out on all of 6 minutes of footage, but I'll live. Whoops sorry , I never saw that thread. A least there are some who agree. I just was getting an idea from another thread, wishing for dvds to be be released. And just about every one (including the one I added "My Bloody Valentine") was uncut. I think execpt for a few movies there really isn't any real uncut versions, in the sense that I'm was talking about. Gore, nudity, sex.... Just wishful thinking that there is such versions.

Its an idea. But like you said how many would do it. I liked it when Unrated versions were rare and special. I once thought my Unrated Texas Chainsaw #3 VHS not DVD was kinda special. or any bootleg versions from other movies like Friday the 13th.

Plus the unrated version has: Unrated DVD Exclusive: 2 1/2-hour documentary on the making of the film. Umm, I am not going to pass that up. Plus, they are coming out on the same day, so that release seems fine to me. Gimme gimme.

Other releases that come out with BS unrated releases after I have the first dvd, like Dodgeball (shut up I loved it), I didn't get though. It was like almost the same running time so I saw no need to get it. Like most things in life, I decide on a case by case basis.

Heh, the way I deal with this is that I almost never buy the first release of big films. Like you said, it's a given they're going to release an unrated/uncut version down the road, I can usually wait.

I'm not big on extras though, I just want the uncut film, so I guess my method wouldn't work for people who want all the featurettes and stuff since they are usually split.

Since BB had the 2 for $20 thing going, I got the Fly and Don't Be A Menace To South Central (I've been waiting for a cheaper/better dvd).
Anyway, the runtime on the Unrated is the same as the old dvd. I wonder if anything is even different, esp. since this was R to begin with.
Got Dodgeball unrated in a trade and watched that the other day. I noticed NOTHING different, maybe one extra "fuck", but that might've been in the pg-13 version (I've only seen each version once).

Said it before and I'll say it again. The Alien Quadrilogy discs are what all dvds should be like. At least a few get it right, the rest leave us stuff to bitch about. :)

i need FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2 uncut , it's missin 48 seconds of just gore , which doesn't sound like much , but that's 48 seconds of the effects , not scenes leadin up to.. also Friday 2 had to be submitted 8 times before it was able to recieve an R rating which , was the record until the sharon stone film Sliver , was submitted 9 times in 1993..............

from what i understand every murder was trimmed............

I have been looking for the uncut version of Friday the 13th Part 2 for YEARS! Actually, two death scenes did not have to be trimmed to receive an R-rating. 1) Terri's death - not trimmed because it was OFF SCREEN to begin with and 2) Vicki's death - not trimmed as we only see her reaction and a small amount of blood. As for every other death, they were were either heavily trimmed or edited out completely (Alice, Crazy Ralph, the Cop, Scott, Mark, Jeff/Sandra). To make matters worse, the director Steve Miner, who did not appear on the Friday the 13th boxset whatsoever, doesn't seem interested in restoring any of the missing footage (I wrote to him about it and got no response). Friday 2 remains the most heavily edited film of the entire series which is such a shame considering it's been 24 years. I, too, would love to see both Friday 2 and My Bloody Valentine restored to DVD in their FULL UNCUT VERSIONS!

I read an interview with the director of MY BLOODY VALENTINE.He HAS an uncut version of the film and offered it to Paramount so that a new remastering could be done,cleaning up the studio negative and reinserting the gore that was cut.He also offered to do an audio comm. for free.They turned him down flat,stating that Paramount would not release an"unrated or NC-17 rated film for home video".What a load of crap !

I'll agree that every film should include the theatrical and unrated/uncut version when applicable. Great examples of this are the Alien Quad., Terminator 2, Gladiator and a few others I'm too lazy to think about. Bottom line is, most of the time a new cut of a great film is made better with extra footage that was worth cutting to begin with. By that I mean extra gory bits, violence and sex. If its 30 minutes of character development, thats when the theatrical version needs to be there too. I'd kill for uncut versions of my favorite horror films and when you really think about it, those are the films that should be uncut. Horror fans watch these films for the blood and ubiquitous nudity, so why not give us every frame of it available now that technology allows it?

here's another great example the movie "Jacqueline Hyde" (not that I'm geting it) from a Fangoria ad. it says completely UNCUT, UNRATED version. But here's the question , how the hell can you state that when its released straight to video. Of course its uncut, what other version is there to compare to? :confused:
