I got a chance to see Eli Roth's Hostel yesterday as "a work in progress" at the Fantastic Film Fest in Austin. How was it? Good gore scenes (that may or may not be excised once the film gets rated) and plenty of hot naked women, but overall, I was disappointed. Gone are the 70's horror homages and strange humor (pancakes!) of Cabin Fever. The film seemed too polished and "Hollywood" and actually reminded me of Saw with the dungeon type rooms of torture and mutilation. Not very imaginative. If anyone wants any spoilers posted, let me know.

Hmmm... I might like this one! Those two things kept me from fully enjoying Cabin Fever. Thanks for the review!

I saw the film last month at the TO film fest and pretty much loved it. Was going to write a review, but there were just so many posted all over the place. I think a bit more character development might have had us invested more in the three main guys, but that may slowed down the film--which has a great pace. The final third of the film is the kind of gutsy revenge stuff I hoped we'd see in Kill Bill 2. This was satisfying on all levels. The film also maintains a cool creepiness all the way through. The humor is still there, but a bit sicker. I really felt like I was in a new unforgiving world. Like the characters, I was seduced by the beautiful women (no lie, these are the hottest girls I've seen in any film in a while. One of them was present at the screening) and the promise of endless sex. The concept behind the film is scary because I find it quite plausible. Although, this film is purely a rollercoaster and the coincidences etc. are fun but at times have a kind of dream logic to them.

I think those who hated Cabin Fever should still approach this with an open mind. It's quite a different film. I agree some of the middle part of the film is reminiscent of Saw, but that's a good thing as far as I'm concerned. Ultimately, I think Saw was quite a different film, but maybe a bit more unsettling, although Hostel probably contains a bit more violence.

Can't wait to own it on DVD.

I'm trying not to hype myself up too much, but the overwhelming majority of the reviews I've read have been positive. I'm very much looking forward to catching this in theaters and it comes as no surprise that Lion's Gate is releasing it. I'm a fan of Cabin Fever so I'm hoping to enjoy this just as much.

Despite the backlash against it, Cabin Fever is one of my favorite films, and I'm very excited to see this because of that. On another note, I read that Roth had a darker ending for this film (this ending was spoiled for me), but after a test screening, it was scrapped, and replaced with something a little more safe. I really wish there were no such things as test screenings.

This film was already given a R by the MPAA by the way. I think Roth had to cut 16 frames if I remember correctly. Hopefully, unlike their Cabin Fever release, LG will actually release this one uncut when it hits disc. I did read that Roth said the original ending will be presented as an extra, so that's a plus.

The film will now be released on December 21! From Fango:

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lions Gate has moved Eli Roth’s gruesome HOSTEL from its January 6 release date to a nationwide debut on December 21—just in time for Christmas! No explanation has been given for the change, but we suspect it has something to do with Dimension’s recent shift of WOLF CREEK, a similarly hard-R horror film, out of its original November 18 berth onto the 6th.

Whatever the case, Roth (pictured with HOSTEL’s Jan Vlasák) is thrilled with the switch. “We’re a Christmas movie!” he raves to Fango. “I can’t wait to find the family that got sold out of FUN WITH DICK AND JANE and went into HOSTEL not knowing what it was. I’m really, really excited. We’re going out wide on the 21st, which I think is a great date. All the college kids will be home for break, and everything else out at that time is all family stuff and pretentious Oscar films. Plus, I heard the Academy’s adding a category called “Most Sex and Violence Combined Into a Single Motion Picture,” and I believe we have a real shot at getting nominated. I honestly am amazed at what the ratings board let us keep in. They’re really changing; they seem to get it.”

Look for an extensive, exclusive set-visit feature on HOSTEL in Fango #249, on sale December 6.

Wolf Creek and Hostel would've made for one hell of a theatrical double feature, but the sooner, the better!
