i picked up the lions gate disc today, i notice that when you select the original french language track with english subtitles, there are two scenes in the movie where subtitles appear while nobody is talking. not really that bad, but kinda annoying. On both of the english dub tracks, there is a new piece of dialogue that isn't spoken in the french language audio track, where Alex says to Marie in the car "we're almost at my parent's house sleepyhead". alex is offscreen while saying it so it's alright on the english track, but when u select the french audio, the english subtitles show that line even though no voice is heard. this happens again later when the girls arrive at the house, when alex warns marie on the english track "my family just moved here 6 months ago so their french is worse then mine". again, when u select the french track w/ subtitles, the subs appear for this line yet no dialogue is heard.

That's probably because subtitles are never the same as an English dub, they always differ. Sometimes in a dub, for God knows what reason, dialogue is added that is spoken off screen, I guess to make it more interesting?

Or cuz they think the audience is stupid and want to try and further explain things. Probably happens more in forgein film translations.
Of course some languages like German never translate word for word, and it comes down to meaning which doesn't always come out right.

The lines you mentioned were never in the French version. They were added to the English version to (theoretically) allow for the seamless use of French in some scenes where dubbing probably wouldn't have worked--or maybe just as a twist, I don't know. Either way, the subtitles appear to just be dubtitles and not actual translations. I can't be sure though unless I saw the disc.

I've determined that Lions Gate is run by idiots.
I popped Amityville 1992 in tonight only to discover that they had covered the 1992 in the title credit with a black box--in an attempt to not date the film...

In a way that's very comical. :D
In another way it's horrifing. :nervous:
I haven't seen the movie, I at least hope the black box is on a black background and doesn't stick out like a bad matte. They should've at least gone digital if it does stick out. :D

I don't care if they took the title completely off Amityville 1992 as long as the movie is on DVD.
I noticed the subtitle problem tonight while watching High Tension, it was a bit annoying cause I had to explain to my sister who hadn't seen the film why they stuck the stupid lines on there.

That is undoubtedly one of the stupidest fucking things I've ever heard! I bought the disc earlier this afternoon, and haven't had the chance to watch it yet, but that just pisses me off because its so incredibly ridiculous. I always knew LG was run by morons, but damn...
I have three different DVDs of Haute Tension, so while the subtitle thing is stupid, it won't bother me.
Kind of weird but doesn't seem like a big deal.
English subtitles and English dubs are generally different creatures. Subtitles should more accurately reflect the original language, while dubs need to be more or less synced up with the original dialouge. Something that might only take six or seven syllables in French might need ten or fifteen to get the same point across in English, so nuances are more easily lost when dubbing. Subtitling doesn't present these problems as much.
I remember a few years ago, with the second "La Femme Nikita" release (the first one from MGM) that the subtitles were just a straight transcription of the English dub, whereas on the previous DVD release (and previous VHS/LD releases, too, I believe) the subtitles were a more direct translation from the original French. If you have the original Trimark Nikita DVD (with the shit transfer) or the MGM SE, watch the English dub with the subtitles on. There's a huge difference.

Same here! That blows. I understand them altering the title for the outer package, but to entirely cut it off in the actual title opening is just lame. Guess I'll just keep my old VHS, and try to burn it to a DVD-R.
I think it's the idiot leftovers from Artisan doing this crap. Many of these DVD's even still resemble the old Artisan packaging right down to the fine print!

here are screenshots of the sub problem. see, in both english audio dubs on the disc these appear if u watch the film with the subtitles, but in the french language dub, no one says these lines even offscreen so thats why it looks funny and out of place

no the R1 has a full brand new commentary thats not on the R2 disc and a select scene commentary from the R2. but the R2 has a making of featurette that is partially included in the making of featurette on the R1. so both discs have exclusive extras. the R1 really is a great disc, it's just that it has a few, so far atleast, minor problems. maybe lions gate will reissue the disc or have an option to send it in for a new reissue like universal did for their Back to the Future set.
