Funny thing is that The Rock's character is not really the main guy. But yet its marketed that way.
From what I hear people say its pretty good, kinda a Resident Evil quality.

It's weird. Every time I see the trailer for this movie, I keep thinking it looks like a Uwe Boll film.
I won't be seeing it in theatres, but I'll probably watch it on TMN or maybe even rent it.

I like the part of the trailer that goes "Holy BZZZZZZZZZZZ!".

I had a chance to go to a screener last Wednesday because of my work, but decided not to. A co-worker went however and said it was "retardedly awsome". Now the credibility of someone who uses 'retardedly awsome' as a descriptive, questionable.....but made me interested none the less

The reviews I've read have not been incredibly possitive as far as the overall plot and script as a whole go, but that the action is very great and the first person scene is awesome. I'd say this is def. a movie I will enjoy as a guilty pleasure type of thing, like Resident Evil.

I don't care if the advance reviews have been positive or not. I'm still going to see it. I like The Rock. He makes movies fun even if the plot is light (e.g. Walking Tall). The movie itself looks cool enough in previews and knowing Winston did all the effects already sold me on seeing this. I'll post my thoughts after I get a chance to watch it.

I'm probably going to go tomorrow because I haven't seen a movie in the theatres since Venom (I'm one of the proud 10 or so that saw and fairly enjoyed it), and I feel like seeing a flick as a warmup to Saw 2 next weekend. I'm not expecting that much, but I do like the Rock and think it might be decently gory if nothing else. i don't know much about the game as I have too much trouble figuring out these new games with all of the codes and puzzles to figure out to get to the action. I'm an atari child who last got into gaming in college with the sega genesis system.

hey guys sorry to report back so late. I was getting on my Madden 06 on.
Well I went to see it and I actually enjoyed it.
Not scary at all. Monsters were ok. Shit load of zombies. It really did remind me of resident evil type move. If you like RE... check this out. You will not be dissapointed. And yes THE ROCK is the main character.

Definitely better than Resident Evil, but you're still better off watching a recorded play through of either the pc or Xbox version of Doom 3. Both versions are far scarier and evil than this movie.

I thought it was solid brainless fun, and agree that it was not in the least bit scary. It did have some decent gore, and was not thankfully overloaded with CGI. On a side note, I went to the 1:50 showing today and showed up around 10 minutes late. When I arrived in the theatre, I was surprised to se that the movie was already going, as the commercials and previews are always good for at least 10-15 minutes. Afeter sitting there for a few minutes, it became clear to me that the movie seemed to be a good way into the action. I walked out and saw that they had sold me a ticket to the 1:00 show! Glancing around, I saw another theatre with a 2:40 Doom and another that was halfway through a showing of The Fog. I decided to kill the time before the next Doom showing catching the second half of Fog. For a little while, despite the heavy CGI, I thought the harsh reviews here were a little off base, By the time it stumbled to its absolutley pathetic "romantic" twist ending conclusion, I was dumbfounded by how terrible it turned out to be. Thankfully I didn't pay for the "pleasure" of watching this abomination! I hope Carpenter at least is laughing all the way to the bank at this defiling of his movie.

Why did I just get the ending of The Fog spoiled for me in the Doom thread? Spoiler tags are your friend.

I wanted to add that both my son and I thoroughly enjoyed the first person perspective segment. He swiftly looked at me said, "Daddy! It's like he's playing a videogame!" I found it to be the most entertaining moment of the entire film.

Well, I guess you told me Mr. Man.
Take heed all, don't get sick and miss your movie OR ELSE.
Some friends went out and saw Doom last night, sans me due to said illness, and they all seem pretty keen on it as a mindless action flick. I have moods where I just want to see stuff get shot so I want to get out and see it eventually. Hopefully, it will do well enough to stick around for a few weeks at the local theater and I can go see it before it is spoiled for me in an unrelated thread.

I caught a matinee this afternoon. I agree that it's mindless fun. Not as good as Resident Evil, IMO, but other folks' mileage will vary. I went in not expecting much and came out enjoying it more than I thought I would. Whoever used the phrase "retardedly awesome" hit the nail on the head. lol.
And yes, the scene with the first person shooter action kicked major ass. Maybe I'm just sentimental since I used to play Doom in my parents basement til 3:00am when I was a wee lad, but that scene rocked my world.

I'll also say that the film took a decidedly strange turn at one point. I was taken aback by it at first but after I thought about it, I think I see what they were trying to do. A weird plot twist, I thought, but I was okay with it.

I liked it alot up until the end scenes. It was basically 'buy when the dvd comes out' quality for me up until they busted out the horrible wire-fu during the end fight scene, so awful...at which point it was downgraded to 'glad I didnt spend the money' ; P

I been sorta wanting to not see this... the first ever trailer hooked me, then it looked shitty. Went to see it today and this movie is fucking awesome fun. That first person scene was the greatest ever! So brutal... definite DVD buy for me. It entertained me for an hour and 45 minutes. Good shit!

What a let-down. Doom had the potential to be the greatest sci-fi horror epic ever conceived. Instead, we were given another pointless sci-fi action flick the likes of which Paul Anderson craps out on a monthly basis. And, after 30 years, it's good to know that Hollywood still hasn't gotten tired of the whole "genetic mutation" angle for conjuring up monsters on-the-fly. Bunch of fucking hacks.

Thought this was pretty good, but not without faults. There was too little action with the monsters. And the plot thing about chromosome 24 was unnecessary and typical (agreed with dmeister that Hollywood really could drop the genetic mutation angle already...the last word on that subject was the Thing anyway!) and stupid, i would've preferred just Hell breaking in. But it looked nice, moved along pretty well and had a nice atmosphere.
Resident Evil is better, though.

This certainly isn't the greatest film of all times, but whatever. I like the Rock. I like Karl Urban. I like the Doom games. I like blood shoot em up action flicks, so basically, I was on board with this movie all the way. It was a lot of fun. The action was moving at a good clip, and there was a lot of quality gore. You just don't get many quality head explosions these days, so they are always appreciated.

I like the Doom games.
I grew up on Doom. Which is why this movie really pissed me off. The whole storyline of Doom -- that set it apart from any other FPS game or Sci-Fi action movie -- revolved around unleashing Hell, which these chuckleheads just completely ignored. I guess their budget just wasn't big enough. I'm hoping Gans does a better job with Silent Hill.

I totaly agree with you, it does have that Owe Boll feel to it. I thought this movie was beyond crap, it has nothing to do with the video game as the PC game was about demons from hell.

This sounds like fun. I wanted to see it for the mindless fun before, but now that you guys are throwing around my favorite name I am definately renting this, like now.
I have not been looking forward to writing about this film, but if people are drawing Bollian comparisons I can't wait.

It does have the Boll feeling to it but a bit more competent.
I rented this movie on the weekend and really enjoyed it. You shut off your brain and just go for a ride. Fun flick.

I liked it. It's fun to watch movies where you don't have to think a lot. Only thing is that I had loved it more if there where more creatures in it. didn't really felt like doom in nightmare mode....

I saw this last night and thought it was pretty cool. The FPS segment ruled.
We rented this yesterday, but I found the knitting I was working on the be much more interesting. The movie wasn't bad, just didn't have anything really all that new or exciting. If The Rock spent more time on screen in MUCH less clothing, I would have paid more attention.

On the topic of the film, I watched it last night. I wanted to write a review of a film that didn't require me to use all parts of my brain, something light-hearted, headed, and dumb. Turns out it's all of those things - but there's nothing to write about.
I didn't mind the cardboard characters really, it's Doom after all. However, it's just too long. At 1:45 there's just no reason to keep going on and on with the same thing. Half hour of this one should have been hacked out - at least half hour did nothing but repeat what had gone before.
The choice of location was poor - everything looked the same. This is easy to forgive in a game, since things can jump out at you, and you're interacting with the thing, but for a film it just gets visually boring. Endlesly running down corridors just doesn't make good cinema (to an extent this is one of y problems with Alien 3 too).
The portion of the film that switches into "game mode" was just appalling. Such a bad bad idea. Not since House of the Dead have I been so sucker-punched into laughing. Just awful, and it too goes on for far too long. Why pay such a homage to the game, when you're ignored other aspects of it?!?!
And then there's the problem that it's just too dark, imo. So damn dark - all the time. It did a good job of hiding what was going on much of the time, but it just got on my nerves.
