Film critic Robert Ebert has just published his latest Great Movies essay, this time for 1998's tremendous Dark City. At the end of the piece is this little blurb:

"Note: Ebert did commentary tracks for the original DVD of "Dark City" and the forthcoming 2006 Director's Cut."
I just watched Dark City the other day and really love that movie. A Director's Cut would be quite interesting.

This is one of my favourite movies, too...incidentally, the DVD has one of the most boring commentary tracks i've ever heard (but i've not heard the Ebert one, the one by the crew or whatever).

I love the movie, so a Director's Cut would be most welcome...as long as it doesn't make the movie worse (i.e. The Warriors).

I'm a little concerned as to what this could possibly mean... I feel like Proyas had a lot of say in how the film turned out from what he's said on his website's forum. He also said very little was cut/unable to be filmed due to budget constraints.

In theory I'd certainly be interested. I'll have to give some thought into it after some reviews come in though. I only just managed to skip the Warriors bullet.

Like others, I loved this movie but am also going to be careful about getting excited about the Director's cut. I'll check out the reviews first and if everything sounds cool, then I'll definitely buy it.

btw, they're practically giving those The Warriors:DC dvds away at Wal-Mart. They're like $12 Canadian. Might pick one up for the features.

The extras are worth it alone if you're a big fan of the movie. They run a little over an hour in total, including some new interviews with some of the main cast. But, for the movie itself...stick with the old DVD! The new intro with the Greek myth narrated by Walter Hill is just laughable. Perhaps if it was narrated by someone else it wouldn't be so bad, but Hill isn't exactly what I would call a great screen narrator.

That is one movie I just could not dig at all.

Pretty simple really - the new DVD version of this coming out. It's being marketed as "Director's Cut". Anyone have any details?

The critically-acclaimed triumph from visionary director Alex Proyas (I Robot The Crow) is back with a brand new directors cut featuring enhanced picture and sound never-before-seen footage and three commentary tracks that take you deeper than ever before into the world of one of sci-fis most exciting and revered tales. When John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell) wakes with no memory at the scene of a grisly murder he soon finds himself hunted by the police a woman claiming to be his wife and a mysterious group of pale men who seem to control everything and everyone in the city.Starring Rufus Sewell (The Illusionist) Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind) William Hurt (A History of Violence) and Kiefer Sutherland (TVs 24).System Requirements:Running Time: 111 minute

This was announced awhile ago, but basically the DVD and blu-ray will have both versions of the film on the disc so everyone is happy. I'm not sure what's been added or changed, though.

I'd forgotten that Proyas did I Robot. That was such a disappointment.

The DVD release only has the director's cut version. It's not too big of a deal though, because the director's cut rocks. Not only is the unneeded narration gone, but more character development has been added that especially helps William Hurt's character. The bonus features contain all the old documentaries as well as updated commentaries. Well worth picking up!

This DC is pretty awesome. I was shocked at how amazing the movie played out. A classic.
