I was thinking picking these two Canadian slashers up on Deep Discount. I heard there both cut though. Are they worth purchasing or is it better to wait for uncut releases?

Might as well pick them up. The likelyhood of both, especially My Bloody Valentine, seeing an uncut release is practically zero. Unfortunate for My Bloody Valentine since the cut footage has been found but Paramount doesn't give a shit.

Yeah Paramount will never release an uncut My Bloody Valentine.
There is supposed to be a sequel though and all the cut footage is going to be put into it via flashbacks.
That's if it ever gets made.

I heard Happy Birthday To Me is getting discontinued. It is through my job, anyway, as we pulled all of our copies and DDD has it for so cheap. I'd say nab it while you can.
Haven't seen MBV yet but I've wanted to for quite some time.

This is why Paramount gets nothing from me. I won't even rent their titles, but will check out what I can from the library then dub it if I like it, or buy used. Fuck them motherfuckers!
An un-cut Friday boxset would end the boycott. An un-cut MBV would break the picket line for me.

The chances of Paramount releasing an unrated cut of My Bloody Valentine any time soon is extremely low. You're probably more likely to get pummeled by a berserk pink elephant.
I'd say there's even less chance of Sony releasing an unrated cut, with the original score intact of Happy Birthday To Me. My original email to them and their response pretty much convinced me that they have no desire to obtain the correct score, which is supposedly absent due to legal/clearance issues (Sony's own words).
Buy both now, because you'll be waiting years otherwise. As DrHerbertWest mentioned, you can still purchase HBTM for under $6 at Deep Discount DVD (http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=COL006014). And MBV can easily be had for around $10 or less.

I own both movies, and when they do, if ever, become available Uncut, I will be buying both copies.

Yeah, great link. Terror Trap is a great site for classic horror, IMO.

I picked up VALENTINE as it has always been censored in the U.S. cut,but I surely wish it would be restored. The music thing bugged me on HAPPY BIRTHDAY though, and I passed on it.There was a musical snag on the DVD of RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD PT. 2 as well, there is some different music used on the disc that was not in the theatrical release.

I haven't updated this recently (as, sadly, nothing much has changed), but for more background on what is missing from MBV (and some more photos of what's missing), see here:

I love Happy Birthday to Me but have never thought much of My Bloody Valentine aside from the awesome Canadian atmosphere it has. I was always disappointed in the lack of gore in that one; I know that sounds shallow but it's not like the story and acting were that great, so there should at least be some good gore, right? At any rate, I do like the idea of a killer miner and some of the murder set-pieces were rather inventive (if not fully realized in the version that was released). The pictures of the uncut shower impalement are painful to look at and I wish those shots had ended up in the film. If Paramount would ever release an uncut DVD of this film, I would buy it in an instant.

I hear what you're saying, Ryan. But for me, there's just something about this movie that I really enjoy. The atmosphere is great, IMO, and even the death scenes, which aren't overly gorey to be sure, still have a intensity that works really well. And it doesn't hurt that the miner outfit creeps me out.
Plus it has that Crazy Ralph character in the bartender!
One of my guilty pleasures, to be sure.

There is no reason to feel guilty for loving My Bloody Valentine, so mark that right off YottNik's Guilty Pleasures list.

Just to play devil's advocate here - why would you want to see it "uncut"? Unless I am crazy - the version Paramount put out was what was shown in theaters - that is the movie we all love. 99 times out of 100 when gore/nudity is added back in to a film that I love and know well - I just find it distracting...!

If, and I say IF, Paramount was going to put out HBTM and MBV, uncut, I would rather that they put the Uncut and Theatrical versions on 2 separate discs, then you can compare both versions, and decide which version you like.

In my opinion I really want to see an uncut version is because it was a highly cut up film. It was almost as if this film was used as example by the MPAA of what could be allowed to show. Now a days its a different story.

Needing a straight answer, if one is out there...
Was anything ever cut from Happy Birthday to Me? I've heard so many conflicting stories over the years, I truly don't know what to believe.
I'm not sure if the DVDs are cut or not. I've got both of these movies up on eBay for the LaserDiscs versions -- anyone know if they're cut or uncut too? I really don't know. That's certainly an option though if anyone's a collector. I plan on getting the dvds for the 16x9s soon even if they are edited.

I know that the DVDs of each are the standard DVD R rated versions, however I'm questioning if anything was EVER cut from Happy Birthday to Me to start with.
I've heard rumors that footage was cut from the "brain surgery" sequence. Other rumors state that everything J. Lee Thompson shot was in the film and that nothing was ever cut.
My Bloody Valentine is very obviously edited. However, Happy Birthday to Me ...if anything was cut...they did a great job at hiding it, as no particular sequeneces stick out as "Oh, there was probably more to that death". The only one that had me scratching my chin at a possible cut was the "motorcycle death". That one could possibly have footage missing, but it's not an extremely obvious part. No missing or awkward music cues like in My Bloody Valentine.
So, the question remains...was anything at all cut from Happy Birthday to Me? Or is the R rated version the version that J. Lee Thompson intended for us all to see?

I know that I have seen pictures of gorier footage from the motorcycle scene, and I am almost positive that I read that at least the skewer scene was cut as well, if not others as well. I am 99% positive that this movie was cut.

I wouldn't get rid of your Happy Birthday to Me laserdisc if I were you... the soundtrack is different on the DVD.
Too late - a fellow from Europe just bought it. :)
But.. I guess I'll copy it to DVD-R before I mail it..

I actually remember the gorier version when it played theaters in spring of '81! I loved the motorcycle scene the most. I also remember David's death being much more than quick flashes as they are now on the DVD. When the film came on Showtime the following year, even my mother noticed that those effects were cut.
