I adore both of these films to death, but Picnic at Hanging Rock is as perfect a mixture of suspense, mystery, and foreboding atmosphere as you're likely to find. Indeed, the atmosphere of the film is unequalled and the story's multiple layers are fascinating to explore again and again.

I'm certainly not taking anthing away from The Vanishing though. That film really unsettled me when I first saw it, and is still just as effective on repeat viewings.

looks like i'll have to watch picnic at hanging rock today so i can vote. i love the vanishing, though.

The Vanishing scared me witless when I first saw it. I was scared for weeks afterwards. It's a great visceral movie. I hate voting against it, but I think Picnic at Hanging Rock is a bit more of an accomplished film. It didn't scare me for weeks on end, but it stuck with me just the same.

Oh and once again, damn you billy for making me choose.

Both of these are among my all-time favorite films...I hold Picnic in just a bit of a higher reguard due to the fact that every viewing is like a new experience, in picking up new nuances and such. I voted for it also because I figured it wouldn't have any votes...and to my surprise it has ALL the votes so far :eek:

Probably the best Vs. thread so far though, considering the amazing quality of both films :)

After watching them each once I would have gone for Spoorloos but now that I have watched them a few times Picnic at hanging rock wins it. That film stays with me for days after each viewing.

Picnic's rep is maily based on being technically very well made. I have never taken to it though.
