I fucked up bad today by going and seeing Touristas in the theater. I emplore all of you to avoid this horrid pile of shit and not have to suffer like I did. A straight Hostel rip-off would have been so much better than what this was.
Characters I couldn't possibly care about. Quite possibly the worst cimematoghapy ever, so much was so dark I couldn't tell what was going on. Plot holes and assorted other shit tthat made no sense. Just all bad all around, please don't waste your time, you have been warned.
By the way, I loved Hostel. Like I said, a Hostel rip-off would've been much better than this. There's maybe 5 minutes of film hear that isn't a complete waste, the rest had me pissed off and flipping off the screen.
I won't even bother with an unrated dvd as I never want to see this crap again.

I appreciate the heads up...and I liked "Hostel", too. Sounds like one to wait for the cable premiere.

My buddy, who generally doesn't like horror, really enjoyed this. It also got a pretty decent review on the Fangoria website... Hmmmm. I'll probably rent it.

Thanks for the warning! Maybe if we ever get through our current Netflix queue, we may give it a chance...but it sounds like a waste of time.

Is it not even funny bad? The trailer was so embarrassingly awful that I thought it was the trailer for Hostel 2. After a trailer that bad, I hoped I could at least have a laugh at it. However, this and a friend's dire warning to avoid it at all cost has me worried that it won't even be worth some guffaws.
However, this review (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=25374) made me laugh, especially the "That not a filmography, my friends. It's criminal intent."

Yeah, it's not even close to funny bad, just outright annoying. It showed some promise in the first act, but quickly turned to absolute shit.
That review definitly hit it on the head, esp. the "paint it black" comment about the last act. After groaning my way through the second act, this just made it all worse.

Maybe I mis-worded it, but I don't feel it's a Hostel rip-off at all. I wished it was since I like Hostel.
It shares a few elements of Hostel, those of Americans lost in another country, but that's about it. It's not a torture film (although it was tortute to watch).
I guess people think my my opinions are crap or something :(

Well, wasn't planning on spending money to see this one anyway so it doesn't really matter.
Edit: the Bloody-Disgusting review (http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/review/976)
I may have to see it because of one line:
"there are numerous cave scenes that are underwater…"

I read that ridiculous Bloody-Disgusting review with amusement. I wonder if we watched the same movie...?
And that bullshit about the brilliant screenplay... It would take a full day to list all of the plotholes.

I just saw this tonight. I had heard good and bad things about this movie so I tried to go in with an open mind. I thought it was pretty decent. Not great, but not bad. Two of my friends who are not big horror fans enjoyed it and my other friend who is a horror fan really liked it. I would say it is a suspense type of horror movie. It had its slow moments and some questionable plot situations (but what movie doesn't have shortcomings), but did have some cool underwater cave footage and some good chases/suspense scenes in my opinion. There was some very cool scenery and the isolation of the jungle was a good setting. I don't want to spoil anything so I'll refrain from commenting directly about things, but I would say it is a definite movie to at least rent and check out. Just my opinion...

"A better and scarier film than Hostel"?
Me calls bullshit on the quote. For 7 extra minutes I might download it, but probably will just stay away as the theater version annoyed me to no end. I'll just watch Hostel again when this comes out.:D

I usually don't pay attention to what other think of a movie. If I think it deserves a look, I'll take a look. Although I haven't yet seen this film. I probably won't buy it, but it might be worth a few bucks to rent it. You know what they say...Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.

saw it. Its not bad, but its nothing compare to Hostel in anyway or form.
I though this movie was going to be hunting the gringos, but it was something else. No big violence or kills, had some gore effects, but nothing like descent. Movie is great if you have a open mind and don't expect much. I give it 2 3/4 out of 5

I rarely expect much anymore. That really comes in handy with some movies.
I'll definitely be putting this in my queue.

This movie was kind of frustrating. For the longest, it played to the director's sole strength in shooting water and beautiful people in an incredibly beautiful manner. I could watch some of his shots independent of a plot, which served me well for most of the movie as not much was going on let me tell you. The problem started when the sun went down and.... they didn't light the damn movie. I don't know if darkness and confusion was the director's intent. However, I like to know what the hell is going on so it irked me.
The big cave chase was actually quite effective in that it made me feel claustaphobic and really nervous, but again, they didn't light it well so.... I didn't really know what the hell was going on. Did I mention I hate that? I felt like it was thisclose to really working, but alas, it forgot to illuminate the movie so it had to settle for being slightly better than your average horror release.
Still, it was a worthwhile rental and the time flew by, even if I was annoyed at times.

Everyone is free to have their own opinion about the film of course, but one criticism I keep hearing of it just isn't true. The film is not a ripoff of HOSTEL,it was,in fact in production at the same time as HOSTEL.Eli Roth was even aware of TURISTAS as HOSTEL was shooting. They cover some of the same angles, but it seems that it was largely coincedental. No doubt, though,as HOSTEL hit theaters first,TURISTAS did mention HOSTEL in some advertising, though that too is common practice.

Either way Hostel won on it's early release and then the movie was better then Turistas also

It was okay, albeit somewhat annoying in parts. Plus, my rental skipped like crazy for some reason, even after buffing and cleaning it ... so that was annoying in and of itself!
I enjoyed the underwater cave footage, but some of the film was a bit ridiculous.
Remember the dude from My Science Project? He's the one who directed this.
I decided to try this one after seeing the mixed responses on this forum.
I actually liked it somewhat. Some nice suspense, great locale, adequate performances. Violence-wise it was Hostel-lite, but this film had more tension, was more plausible and lots more entertaining.
I do agree on the dark-cinematography, especially near the end. It didn't annoy me as much as some of you have complained about, but it was noticeable.

Finally saw Turistas this past weekend and was pleasantly surprised after reading so many negative reviews. I thought the cinematography was gorgeous, most of the characters were likeable and that tense feeling of impending doom drove me crazy. I didn't notice it being too dark near the end as others have mentioned, maybe because we didn't see it in theaters and watched the DVD with all the lights out? Not sure, but didn't have any problems there. The chase scene toward the end got a little ridiculous but was still enjoyable enough. If you weren't that impressed by Hostel, you might really like Turistas.

I had no idea that was the same dude. Awesome. I love My Science Project.
In the video store where I first saw the VHS box as a kid, some politically-minded clerk had pasted Ronald Reagan's face over Fisher Stevens'. With that big ol' gun in his hand, it cracked me up.

I did end up downloading this and almost enjoyed it on a second viewing. It's definitly not cuz it was unrated, I'd like to know where the extra 7 minutes were as I noticed maybe 2-3 of them.
I completely agree with onebyone's comments about the lighting, which was a huge part of what made me hate this so much in the first place.
BTW, are any of the deleted scenes worth seeing? The dl I found was the dvd files, but just the unrated side so it doesn't have them.

Just watched this the other night, I thought it was pretty decent.
Like others have said, there were problems with the lighting in some parts.
One thing I didn't see metioned yet was that all the violence was quite real looking and brutal. I was actually mouth opened on the first two deaths. Which I immediately rewinded to watch again. It took me by surprise, because I didn't think the film was going that way from the first part of the movie. The vibe didn't feel like a horror movie to me, just some suspense film then wham those two deaths appear. Maybe it was the cinematography that added to the realistic feel of the violence. So that was a good thing I guess.

And winner for most underrated horror film of the year goes too....
I really do not get why anyone would have a problem with this film. i really enjoyed it. Great shooting locations, nice buildup and tension and it didn't feel like an excuse to show torture at all. Really my only complaint was the cast was a little to pretty. Other then that what is their to complain about?
Someone needs to rename this thread to Turistas = Good!

In my circle of friends, most of us think Touristas (for what it's worth) is better than Hostel because there's more of a plot to it.
I liked Touristas, but I thought some of the "chase" scenes in the underwater caves towards the end went on a little too long. All that sucking up the airholes stuff.

It was OK, I guess. It was kindof pointless, but there are worse ways of spending your time. The girls are hot and the underwater stuff was different. I haven't even seen Hostel or any of the other clones, so I can't comment.
