I just turned on SciFi to watch Army of Darkness. I caught the end of a wrestling match and they were advertising more to come. This is the same bunch of idiots who cancelled MST3K.

Who the F*ck handles programs for stations like this?

What is this world coing to? What next MTV will stop playing music?......;)

Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous, isn't it?

Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous, isn't it?

I gave up on them 99% when they cancelled MST3K and at the same time were advertising their broadcast of BIG (The Tom Hanks movie). I saw really no reason to continue watching their crapfest.

The only reason I ever watch Sci-Fi these days is when Doctor Who is on or if they have a Twilight Zone marathon. They really pissed me off when they cancelled MST3K.

Oh, what happened to Tales From the Darkside? It hasn't been on the past two weeks that I've seen anyway...

is this an old thread or what?

Luna
12-06-2006, 05:11 AM
No. The other thread was actually a fairly positive response to wrestling returning on Sci-Fi. In fact it was nearly all about the wrestling itself. This thread title merely expresses the sentiment of the post I made a few pages into that thread which not too many people seemed to share.

Long ago my sister and I called our cable provider just about every month asking about the Sci-Fi channel before it got offered. We even saw our cable company's booth at some function or another and asked for Sci-Fi channel. Since we had watched MST3K religiously on Comedy Central we were shocked when it went over to Sci-Fi. One of my sister's friends had to tape every show for us.

It was a long hard battle but finally they picked it up. I remember the first time I ever saw the channel they were showing Evil Dead for Halloween, this must have been close to the very birth of the station.

It's very sad for me to see what Sci-Fi channel has become. Not even a hollow shell of itself anymore, it's use to be a promise of a grand future for cable TV. Now it's pretty close to being the worst station on TV. Wrestling on the Sci-Fi Channel? That's like live action on Cartoon Network, another station going straight to crap. What's the world coming to?

Darkside is only run at midnight and / or 12:30am. They ran it Monday night. No more marathons though! I've taped every one so far. That, Dr. Who and Battlestar are the only reasons to watch that station anymore. They've really gone downhill with wrestling and reality shows. Any good old scifi, they run at hours most working people can't catch. Fortunately I have most of the good stuff on DVD already! It's too bad! Used to be my favorite station!

Yeah, they really screwed up, except for the shows you mentioned. Really, the only channel I couldn't live without right now is BBC America. Doctor Who (2005) is currently being run on it (last night was "The Unquiet Dead") and it has other great shows too, from new comedies, dramas and miniseries to older stuff like The Avengers, which is aired every weekday. :D

Sci-Fi has been killing themselves for years attempting to get into the realityTV bizness and for the most part they've all failed. Crossing Over, Scare Tactics, and numerous other bad ideas for the network that I can't even remember. All have been hyped for months before premiere only to fall flat on their ass. Ghost Hunters is about the only one that has ever had anything resembling success. I really wish they'd get the hint that the realityTV/Wrestling audience is not the demographic they should be catering to. It doesn't take a genius to realize that realityTV and science fiction is a contradiction in terms.

Crossing Over With The Biggest Douche In The Universe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Biggest_Douche_in_the_Universe) seemed like the beginning of the end for me.

I have to share this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Edward#Controversies)...Terri Schiavo

On the March 24, 2005 episode of the FOX News Channel morning show FOX & Friends, Edward said that he could read the mind of the braindead Terri Schiavo, who was in a hospice in Florida, hundreds of miles away from the FOX News studio. Edward said "[Schiavo is] definitely clear on what's happening now around her."[12]The problem is that reality television is cheaper than getting a show with an actual story. There's so much stuff they could air but they choose not to. They're basically huge bastards.

Okay, there was Crossing Over and Scare Tactics. Can anybody remember any of the other non-scifi original shows the channel has introduced? We should compile a list. I recall some sort of lame-assed Regis-style talk show a few years ago that they hyped for like 5 months that was hosted by a man and a woman and which disappeared like virtually the next day. I forgot the title.

Oh hell, that sounds awful. I didn't even see those ads but I bet a friend of mine did. I'll have to ask around.

Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sci_Fi_Channel_%28United_States%29#Non-science-fiction_programming) has more fun info for this thread.Non-science-fiction programming

In 2006, Sci Fi began showing some non-sci fi programming. These have included:

* Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, shown on May 4, 2006[7]
* WWE's Extreme Championship Wrestling, started June 13, 2006.[8]

In the past, the network also aired films like the Mel Gibson classic "Braveheart", as well as films like "Cape Fear" & "Dante's Peak" which have nothing do with the medium of science fiction or fantasy which had many viewers asking why are these movies on the channel. Also, during a weekly morning cartoon block, the animated series Rambo, based on the Sylvester Stallone action series about a Vietnam War veteran, aired. They forgot to mention Passions (http://soaps.about.com/b/a/225672.htm). I'll have to rectify this.

i blame survivor.

Ultimately, I think, it's the fault of MTV. The Real World starting the realityTV ball rolling, but if you go farther back you can blame the success of Remote Control which proved that there's far more money to be had in screwing the original core fanbase and targeting the middle of the road audience instead.

Oh, MTV is a subject I can rant on at length.

I just find it weird that such a large portion of their programming isn't actually science fiction but they still haven't changed the name of the channel. I mean if they want a schlocky horror channel, a science fiction channel is the wrong place for that... but then again I'm the type of person who alphabetizes her CDs so maybe I'm just a stickler for categorization. Really, I just think that woman who runs the channel ought to pull her head out of her ass.

They used to care about, and cater to the sci-fi audience. Now they don't give a damn, it's all about making more money. If they could increase their market share by showing college basketball on weeknights and cooking shows in the morning, they'd do it in a heartbeat.

I feel somewhat dirty, but I still watch a lot of their movies (I love so-bad-they're-good movies), and I like Ghost Hunters. Stargate and Stargate Atlantis are good too, but they're in reruns now.

Agreed. Or, maybe have a specific timeslot in which it is solely the Sci-Fi Channel. That way, fans can safely turn to the channel and not be surprised by shitty crime dramas or other shitty things that are not a part of shitty Sci-Fi programming.

As far as MST3K goes, I think the creators of the show were ready to move on anyway. They didn't bother putting up much of a fight when the cancellation was announced.

That being said, I haven't really watched Sci-Fi since the show was canceled.

Oh ok. Sorry. I was just responding to the fact that the original post was unaware that this wrestling show has been on for months now. So I figured I send them there, where people were talking about it.

P.S. - speaking of MTV -- MTV will begin to air Wrestling Society X on January 30th at 10:30 p.m. To go against SCI's ECW show.
