There's already a thread on the best movies that were released this year, so I thought I'd start one with the best DVDs of the year. 2006 had alot of great releases on DVD, with most of them being in September (a huge month for horror DVDs). Here's my list:
1. Emilio Miraglia Killer Queen Box Set (awesome set with a great figurine)
2. Street Trash 2 Disc (I'd never seen this movie prior and I loved it. Not to mention the documentary was one of the best I've ever seen)
3. Class of 1984 (great movie and great release, hadn't seen the film before this release either)
4. Texas Chain Saw Massacre 2 Disc (this is a movie that deserved a special edition)
5. Dust Devil (wasn't a huge fan of the movie, but all the weird documentaries and audio disc at a low price made this one of the best this year)
6. Luciano Ercoli Death Box Set
7. Nightmare On Elm Street
8. Maniac Cop (great transfer and audio track, awesome movie)
9. Pet Semetary (finally a good edition of this movie)
10. The Roost

Dazed & Confused: Criterion Collection
Great transfer, great sound, great bonus material. And it's about time.
The Emilio Miraglia Killer Queen box set was pretty cool and I'm really interested in seeing/getting Dust Devil, especially with such a cool DVD release.
Otherwise, I really can't recall which DVDs came out this year. Was the Kingdom of Heaven DC from this year? If so, then that was also a brilliant release.

Just saw that IGN DVD (http://bestof.ign.com/2006/dvd/1.html) has a Top DVDs of 2006 list. Some nice pics, although no Horror.
Dazed & Confused won for "Best Double-Dip":
Why It Rocked: Having burned out two VHS copies, two DVDs and even an old Betamax tape of Dazed and Confused, IGN's DVD staff was perhaps understandably enthused about the prospect of a new two-disc edition of Dazed and Confused. Then, of course, we found out it was being produced by Criterion Collection, that repository for all things great and small when it comes to DVD; thankfully, they lived up to their reputation for greatness, producing a set that not only surpassed all previous versions of Linklater's film, but overtook virtually every other major DVD release in 2006. Remastered picture and sound? You got it. A commentary track? It's there. Audition tapes, interviews and documentary footage? You get that too. In fact, it's safe to say that there will not even be a more comprehensive collection of Dazed material than what is found here, including the 72-page booklet, which offers an additional wealth of comments and observations from cast and crew members. All that said, of course, we're not saying you absolutely have to buy this edition of Dazed and Confused - but you'd be a lot cooler if you did.
They also have a fun 2006 DVD Year in Review (http://dvd.ign.com/articles/751/751646p1.html)

For me as a music fan and musician, the dvd release of the year is: KISSOLOGY with the Largo 77 bonus disc.

I am going to have to give this some serious thought!! There aren't any DVDs that come to mind, so there couldn't have been much to WOW me!
