It's a bit surprising that with the remake of "The Hitcher" hitting theaters, nobody will capitalize by re-releasing the original starring Rutger Hauer as a special edition DVD.

I watched the old DVD from HBO Video the other day and man could it use a new transer plus I'd love to hear a Rutger commentary "It was my idea to put the switchblade to his crotch. Kinda came up with it on the spot. C. Thomas took it in stride."

I like the original film alot and would definitely pick up an SE. It is kinda odd that they haven't done so to capitolize on the new film.

There was a 2 disc special edition released in the UK a few years ago packed with a director/writer commentary, screen specific commentary by people involved in the film including Rutger Hauer and documentaries etc.

Yeah - the R2 is the way to go for this one. I think it's quite cheap now too.

Probably the best part of the special edition is Harmon's excellent short, "China Lake"... in many ways a little precursor to "The Hitcher".

That's the one that I own, a very nice presentation indeed.
