From Variety.com
Relevant Entertainment has acquired rights to and will remake the 1980 cult horror film "Cannibal Holocaust." It's aiming for a summer start.

Relevant partner Michael Menchel and associate Steve Whitney will produce. The project is fully financed by Keith Previte of Scorched Earth Entertainment and Catherine Williams, who also will serve as producers. Paul Mason, Jordan Rush and Larry Joackim will exec produce.

The original, directed by Italian helmer Ruggero Deodato, has been banned in dozens of countries due to its gore and violence. Pic centers on a professor traveling to South America to find out what happened to a film crew that disappeared while shooting a documentary about reputed cannibal tribes. He eventually discovers the remains of the crew and several reels of undeveloped film, which show the disastrous consequences of the crew's decision to provoke the natives.

Deodato shot the pic in documentary style and was jailed briefly after the Italian premiere until he could prove the actors were unharmed.

Whitney, who spent six months securing the rights, previously partnered with Previte for the 2005 remake of "The Amityville Horror." Whitney and Previte also exec produced "Borderland" for Lionsgate.

Relevant's in pre-production on "Haunting in Connecticut" for Gold Circle/Lionsgate and is developing "The Tortoise and the Hippo" for Walden Media and "Pledged" for Paramount.

Gotta admit, I laughed out loud when I read the title. This isn't a film that really screams "remake" and I'm not really interested in seeing one. New ideas, studios.. new ideas!

You just gotta ask why? Other remakes have been done under the guise of "re-imaging"........but this is just lazy.

They cannot possibly make it any more relevant than the original except having a jive black character, it cant have more sex or even more violence...especially the animal stuff.

Yeah I'm gonna go ahead and predict there won't be animal violence for this one...

I'd say this is the best one to remake or perhaps just base a new film off of. Cannibals could make for a cool and scary film. I've deliberately not seen the original because it used animal violence.

There's an animal violence-free option on the Grindhouse DVD, if you're interested.

There's also the "I don't support films that have purposly hurt animals regardless of any back-pedalling DVD options" option. Thanks though ;)

The sheer concept of remaking the single most un-PC film in motion picture history in this era of suffocating political correctness boggles my mind. No matter what they try it's bound to come off looking like Disney's version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame compared to the original.

Just thought it was worth a try. ;)

I also have not seen this movie due to the animal violence - maybe ill see the crappy remake since im sure they wont actually torture and kill any real animals in it- but this has already been discussed in another forum....<:

worse case scenario you could show this "trailer" to someone that normally wouldn't watch CH and convince them that the movie really isn't all that bad. talk about evil deeds.

UPDATED: No longer a remake according to Bloody-Disgusting

Back in 1984 Ruggero Deodato created quite a stir when his film Cannibal Holocaust (pictured inside) was released into the world. Over 20 years later it is regarded as one of the most brutal and convincing horror movies ever released. We received official confirmation this morning that Deodato will be returning to franchise he created with a "companion piece". It is very important to understand that this is a companion film and NOT a sequel, NOT a remake and NOT a reboot! Time to get excited! Cannibal Holocaust has been banned in dozens of countries due to its gore and violence. Click the title above for more info on the original film.
