Are there any plans to make a new Dracula movie?

By the way, I am currently launcing a new Dracula site and am seeking copyright free Dracula photos, articles etc.

I think your site sounds like a great idea however, what isn't a great idea is a new Dracula movie. Or any new vampire movie for that matter. Based on the drivel that's been pumped out over the last few years (hell, the last decade!) I think the vamp genre needs to slumber for a bit before making a (hopefully) triumphant return.

I would agree. Don't get me wrong I love zombie movies thoroughly, but the concept is so overdone this decade that my excitement level for new zombie films isn't quite what it used to be.

You're quite right. One can become somewhat jaded through seeing some mediocre vampire movies. It's just like reading too many substandard vampire novels.

I think the problem with Dracula isn't the original source material so much as the current whoring of vampires within our society. Every 14 year old girl has a copy of Anne Rice or some other melodramatic rag of a vampire novel. And they're all "psychologically complex" vampires that readers empathize with.

Every society creates the type of vampire it needs, whether it be the Orientalized reverse-imperialistic Dracula (Stoker's Dracula), the plague ridden Jewish-esque scapegoat Count Orlock (Nosferatu), or the suave '70s female liberating Dracula (John Badham's Dracula). Unfortunately, the AIDS/homosexual rights vampires of the late '70s (created and perpetuated by Anne Rice) has hung around because it allows readers to tap into forbidden, subversive ideas/sexuality. (Safely from their living room, of course!) These vampires are no longer symbols of evil or ruin, but flawed super humans and anti heroes. They've basically become a hyper-sexual incarnation of the Tolkien elves.

I'd like to see a third wave Feminist Dracula film. (For the love of god, if you don't have a strong understanding of Feminism as a historical-political movement, do not respond to that comment!) One where vampirism doesn't equal sexual liberation of either gender, but rather enslavement to/complicity with the patriarchy. Nix Stoker's band of "good men" and put Mina alone against Dracula. Then I think movie makers will have something ideologically interesting to work with. You'll have vampires that are deliciously evil and cruel, not mopey wuss vampires who want to sob into a handkerchief about their regrets.

Last I heard George A. Romero had a finished script for an adaptation of Dracula that was being shopped around. It was going to be a mini-series with ABC but got dropped for Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital instead. C'est la vie.

There's a new movie coming out called "Dracula's Guest" (assumingly based on the Stoker story) that is starring Andrew Byrnarski (the new Leatherface) as Dracula. I have a very hard time picturing him in the role, but we will see how he does. As far as Dracula movies go, it seems to me the well has pretty much run dry. I mean, how many different adaptions of one book can there be? I think vampire movie is more realistic as far as what's still to come, and I think there are still plenty of great vampire movies that have yet to be made. I am a die-hard Dracula and vampire fan, but the "Dracula" title should really be put to rest.

But hey, you never know what the future holds so I'm open-minded to any film that may come along.

Straying off topic....I only caught part of the first episode of Kingdom Hospital but it seemed to be really bad. Von Trier's original The Kingdom was great though. Oh wait, am I turning this into another "Uhg, another remake" thread? Sorry.:D

I was really looking forward to Romero's take on Dracula. Shelved indefinitely or permanently: who knows?

I cannot see Andrew Byrnarski as Dracula. This has nothing to do with my dislike of him as Leatherface. Just sounds like miscasting to me.
