Fangoria scored some big scoops on what's coming up from Synapse films, in two articles:French chiller RÉSONNANCES to DVD via Synapse
Fango spoke recently to Don May Jr. of Synapse Films, who revealed that the DVD company has picked up the French horror film RÉSONNANCES for U.S. release later this year. “We were at the Fantasia film festival in Montreal when it played there last July, and Jerry Chandler, my business partner, just fell in love with the movie right away,” May tells Fango. “I was seeing something else when he saw that, and he came out of the theater and said, ‘Look, we’ve got to figure out who owns this thing, we’ve gotta know who these people are’; he just loved it.”
Describing RÉSONNANCES, directed by Philippe Robert, as “a cross between ALIEN, TREMORS and THE HITCHER,” May demurs from revealing much more about the plot, but does say, “On the surface—or below the surface, as it were—it’s about a bunch of people who are attacked by these creatures that burrow up from under the ground and attack them. That’s all I want to say, because there are all these elements that kind of tie in together, and if you pay close attention. there’s a really interesting twist at the end of the movie. It’s a DIY, low-budget movie, but it’s very ambitious; I believe it has close to 500 digital effects shots, with helicopters and ghosts and all kinds of crazy things, like a sequence with this thing ripping through a lot with cars flying up in the air.
“What appealed to us about it the most,” he continues, “was that these guys didn’t have any money at all, and what we saw on screen was a labor of love. These guys just went out and made the movie they wanted to make, and busted their butts to get these digital effects to work; it’s just unbelievable what these guys did. It’s a lot of fun; it’s a perfect popcorn movie for a Saturday afternoon, and it just impressed us very, very much. We don’t know exactly when the movie is coming out; we’re working on that right now and only finalized the deal in the last few weeks, so as more items come in, we’ll have a better idea what’s going to be on the disc.”
As for Robert’s personal contributions, May reveals, “We e-mailed him last week and said, ‘Whatever you’ve got, let’s get it together.’ We’re going to shoot for a audio commentary—his English isn’t so hot, so we might have to do that subtitled—and we’re going to try to put as much on this disc as we can. We believe this is one of the cooler horror movies to come out in quite a while; we spent two weeks at Fantasia last year, and this was one of the first films we saw that we really wanted for Synapse.” For a taste of what to expect, click here to go to the RÉSONNANCES page at Robert’s website, which is in French but contains a very cool trailer and a photo gallery.http://www.fangoria.com/news_article.php?id=4106
And the rest of their slate:
After giving Fango the scoop yesterday about Synapse Films’ acquisition of the French creature feature RÉSONNANCES, the company’s Don May Jr. filled Fango in on what’s up with some of its previously announced titles and shared a couple more surprises. Regarding the special edition of Frank Henenlotter’s BASKET CASE 2 (pictured), May tells us, “We’re waiting for [FX creator] Gabe Bartalos to turn in the making-of featurette. The HD mastering is done and it’s ready to go, and once the featurette is done we’ll be officially announcing it. I don’t know how long the documentary is going to be, but its gonna be like a substitute for not having an audio commentary. Frank is commentaried out at this point; he told us he hates to do them because he doesn’t like to listen to himself talk, and I can respect that.”
Synapse is also wrapping up work on John Fasano’s heavy-metal horror flick BLACK ROSES, to follow up its release of Fasano’s ROCK ’N’ ROLL NIGHTMARE last year. “We’ve got a commentary on that one, and the newly remastered picture from the negative is insane,” May says. “Vinnie Pastore is going to hate us when he sees how beautiful he looks when he’s sucked into the demonically possessed woofer.” In addition, the finishing touches are being put on a re-edit of Adam Wingard’s HOME SICK, starring fright fave Bill Moseley. “We’re adding opening and closing credit designs to the movie right now, and maybe a few more sound effects. We just submitted it to the Fantasia film festival two days ago, and are hoping we’ll get programmed there. If that happens, then we may have HOME SICK out in October for Halloween.”
And in a fresh bit of exciting news, May reveals, “We’re doing new remastered special editions of THOU SHALT NOT KILL…EXCEPT and RUNNING TIME with [writer/director] Josh Becker, Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and all those guys,” May says of the killer-cult bloodbath and real-time crime thriller. “And right now—fingers crossed—we want to put some of their famous early short films that you never get to see on these discs.” One of them may be STRYKER’S WAR, an early 45-minute version of THOU SHALT NOT KILL. “We did transfer that,” May reveals, “and how we’re going to use it is still up in the air; it’s got some music issues we have to figure out first. You know, when these kids were making these movies, they didn’t care where they got their music, and sometimes it came from real composers with real songs that may or may not be usable. But we’ll look into that and see what we can come up with. We’re going to do new transfers on the two features, and Josh is working with us on putting extras together. As a matter of fact, Bruce is being filmed right now in Oregon for them.”
In the meantime, you can look for HORROR OF MALFORMED MEN and SNAKE WOMAN’S CURSE (see previous item here), the first two of several Asian shockers in Synapse’s future, to street August 28. The company has also been serving as the U.S. conduit for Impulse Pictures, releasing a series of softcore titles that will include 12 of the German SCHOOLGIRL REPORT films and 1973’s ANITA, starring THRILLER: THEY CALL HER ONE EYE’s Christina Lindberg and a young Stellan Skarsgard. In a more explicit vein, the company recently put out 42ND STREET FOREVER: XXX-TREME SPECIAL EDITION, a collection of vintage adult-film trailers. And finally, May reports that you can definitely expect a follow-up to SMALL GAUGE TRAUMA, last year’s collection of short genre films from the Fantasia festival. “We’re working on that right now,” he says, “and I can let you know that Robert [THE SEPARATION] Morgan’s THE CAT WITH HANDS is going to be on it, along with [Luis Berdejo and Jorge C. Dorado’s] LA GUERRA and maybe, maybe, maybe something from Nacho Cerdà.” —Michael Gingoldhttp://www.fangoria.com/news_article.php?id=4116
Not sure if I'm going to pick up the single disk versions of Schoolgirl Report because I'm wondering if there's going to be an eventual boxset. Not sure how long I can hold out once the 4th entry of the series is released.

Don announced he was working on BLACK ROSES on his DEADPIT interview a couple of months ago. I know this because I creamed my jeans upon his mentioning it.
Thou Shalt Not Kill... Except, I think my current DVD will hold me over for eternity :) Crap movie, but that's what makes the commentary so fun. A remastered Stryker's War (which is actually better than Thou...) may be tempting. I already have a copy of Stryker's War in Crap-O-Vision.

I guess this is as good of place as any to post some updates from Don May:- The website redesign is almost there... the webcart/shopping section is still a bit buggy. Once it is fixed 100%, we'll continue to add the rest of our product (and other studios product) to the site for sale.
- Today should be the last day of QC for 42ND STREET FOREVER: EXPLOITATION EXPLOSION. A few last minute menu nav fixes (and my SUPER paranoia about things playing correctly, progressive scan, etc.) have dragged this on a bit longer than expected, but it should be going to press by the end of the week. The commentary is so informative and fun, I've listened to it about 4-5 times now. This one is on schedule for the January 29, 2008 release.
- We are finishing up the audio on HOME SICK right now. There was a bit of a problem when the audio mix originally got lost and Adam Wingard had to redo everything. Now, we got the restored audio and the levels are a bit uneven (I noticed this during the July Fantasia screening) and, unfortunately, the audio was mixed in 24fps instead of 29.97... so that's the delay. I had to go back in and re-EQ and re-sync everything. BUT, that being said, it's almost done. I'm a perfectionist and I want some things fixed, so it's taking me longer than expected.
- We are currently in authoring on PARTY 7 and KARAOKE TERROR. They should be done soon. MADAME O is headed to authoring this week. P7 and KARAOKE TERROR should be out April 29, 2008.
- SCHOOLGIRL REPORT #3 is finishing up the subtitling right now... and, yeah... in NTSC it's 95 minutes so this one IS uncut compared to the Japanese 79 minute release. We've checked it against the previous release and it is much longer than the Japanese DVD. So, no fears on this one. It's schedule for a February 26, 2008 release.
- Early next year, if I can get to LA at the end of January, we hope to start our high-definition restoration and mastering on THE KINDRED.
- We have quite a line up ready for SMALL GAUGE TRAUMA 2 and plan on releasing that in June or July '08. The last possible submission just came in on Friday...
- We have to AMAZING film from Argentina in the works right now, too. Look 'em up... ANIMALADA (horror film about a man in love with a sheep... it's insane) and ROSARIGASINOS (GANGS OF ROSARIO... a GOODFELLAS-like crime drama that is pretty amazing). These are getting prepped for release now and will be available in the Spring.
- Besides the SCHOOLGIRL REPORT series, we have some upcoming goodies coming from IMPULSE PICTURES. The one finishing up now, THE SECOND COMING OF EVA, is amazingly sexy!
- As soon as Josh Becker is ready (he's working on a new movie right now), we'll be starting the restorations and HD mastering on our new THOU SHALT NOT KILL... EXCEPT and RUNNING TIME releases. We were able to get some fun stuff from Bruce Campbell for these.
More to come... Jerry and I are hard at work! Right now the DVD market is in the shitter, so we're moving as fast as we can! All I can say is to support all us indie-DVD companies right now. We can use the support.
Our August releases did... ok.... not great, which was a shame. HORRORS OF MALFORMED MEN and SNAKE WOMAN'S CURSE could've done better. Honestly, these are two of the best titles we've ever produced, so it's a shame they didn't catch on as we'd hoped. The November POISONOUS SEDUCTRESS titles did even worse... I know these aren't for everyone, the economy is in the crapper and the DVD market is pretty bad, but we really need your support on these three! There was something in the NY POST about them on Saturday, so maybe this will help the sales somewhat. Eh, ya win some, ya lose some, ya know?
http://www.nypost.com/seven/1209200...icks_638230.htm
We'll keep you posted on any new developments... once the paperwork comes in, I'll have another horror classic to announce (hopefully soon).
:(
Malformed Men, Snake Woman and the Poison Seductress series is what it's all about for me so it's a shame that others aren't picking up on them. I'd like to reiterate that HD remasterings and bountiful extras are a privilege, not a right.
Reading that makes me worried about Mondo Macabro all over again. We've had good news with Panik House / Casa Negra so I'm hoping they're good too.

Personally, I can't wait for THE KINDRED. I love that crazy , corny little monster flick. I seem to remember some time ago that Synapse was going to release THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN, but I guess that isn't going to happen. Anybody out there know anything about this ?

The producer to MELTING MAN apparently sold the rights to MGM in perpetuity, only to turn around and double-sell them to Synapse. Don May discovered the deception and got his money back.
Hopefully MGM will give us an INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN release in the Midnite Movies line.

I like Synapse. They are an enthusiastic bunch, and their releases are almost always intriguing to me. I haven't had a DVD from them yet that didn't impress me. And, unlike Barrel and Grindhouse (who also do stellar work), Synapse will give updates on a range of titles, not just ones that are right around the corner.
In June, Synapse posted on their blog about an upcoming DVD of Patrick:
So, I'm sitting in a production facility today working on PATRICK and I figured I'd give you all a bit of an update. We have remastered PATRICK in anamorphic widescreen and we will be releasing it in October or November of this year. The remaster looks fantastic and our new transfer seems to have more picture information on all four sides when compared to the older out-of-print Elite version (just so you know).
A few of you that have heard about this release have asked us about the "Goblin" score version. The version we are releasing is the original uncut Australian version without the English dubbing. The "Goblin" scored version of PATRICK is indeed shorter and does not represent the original version. I did inquire about this version with the licensors and, while they didn't give me all the details, they said that the "Goblin" score version was problematic for them and that we wouldn't be able to do it. For those of you who WANT the "Goblin" score, you could certainly buy the excellent CD soundtrack that's currently available and listen to it along with our version of the movie! :)
Also, their latest batch of upcoming releases were mentioned:
We are also working on re-releases of the following films (to come out within the same month or so of PATRICK): SYNGENOR, DARK FORCES, THIRST and STRANGE BEHAVIOR. And, as Synapse Films, we absolutely PROMISE to have better cover art on these than the previous now out-of-print Elite versions! :)

Cobbled together from very recent posts by Don May Jr. over on AV Maniacs:This just in... we JUST signed the deal a few minutes ago...
Coming in 2010 from us on both Blu-Ray and DVD. Details to come, as soon as we know what we may be adding.
http://www.gomorrahy.com/images/embodiment_of_evil_poster02.jpg
There is a high def master done for it, but I really want to do something with the 2K scan... and we also will be programming it in select theatres before the release. Our version is gonna rock harder than any other version out there.
An to answer the question regarding the digital or 35mm of EMBODIMENT. We are looking into getting a 35mm print. Hopefully the same one they showed at the Fantasia Film Festival this year.
Mojica and his son are coming to the USA in early December on other business and they may stop by our offices, so we'll ask him if he's up for [convention appearances].
Blew my mind, and it really shouldn't have because he'd been talking a lot with them during the whole productions. I always assumed anyone else for some reason. This will probably be my most anticipated release and I'm glad I've held off from the ABUK Blu-ray despite how tempted I was.
Also:
OK, I can spill...
We are also doing... (this one many people will find out of left field, but we had a million requests):
THE VIOLENT SHIT FILMS (a possible box set of all of them)
27 NIKKATSU "ROMAN PORNO" TITLES + A NIKKATSU TRAILER COLLECTION DISC (this will not be a 42ND STREET FOREVER release, though). These are absolutely CRAZY movies... so perverse, offensive and nutty. See some title details here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nikkatsu_Roman_Porno_films
The titles are, uh, certainly odd and Nikkatsu's translations aren't all exactly correct (but quite funny). Here are some that I can remember off the top of my head.
PEARL DIVER: TIGHT SHELLFISH
RAPE!
The NURSE DIARY Series
SHE CAT
ZOOM UP: BEAVER BOOK GIRL
LOVERS ARE WET
FAIRY IN A CAGE
We also just signed a GREAT docu we saw at The Fantasia Films Festival this year called GRAPHIC SEXUAL HORROR. http://www.graphicsexualhorror.com/
We are currently translating/subtitling the DIY French horror film, RESONNANCES, as well as ASYLUM (aka I WANT TO BE A GANGSTER)... a great little gangster/surreal/horror film we just picked up.
That's all I got as far as new stuff at this time (there are other things, I just can't talk about them yet).
We just finished the HD transfer of THE ODD ANGRY SHOT and are awaiting materials for DARK AGE (as well as some other clearances for it before we get started).
We also have at least two more 42ND STREETs coming (in the planning stages), including one on Blu-ray... and BASKET CASE 3, THOU SHALL NOT KILL EXCEPT, and a bunch more I can't seem to remember at the moment.
[THUNDERCRACK!] Next year is the anniversary, so we're shooting for October 2010.
Which again blows my mind. I love Japanese porno so much it's not even funny.

I saw a Nikkatsu flyer at the American Film Market this year announcing that they had created new masters of the Roman Porno titles and they were now available for international sales. Anyone gonna get or seen RESONNANCES?
Looks and sounds kinda fun :)
A perfect getaway for a group of friends turns into a nightmare in this amazing French micro-budget horror/sci-fi film! Thomas, Yann, Vincent and three female friends hop into their cars and travel to the French mountains for a relaxing weekend trip. On their way, a dangerous psychopath escapes from prison and there’s even talk of a ghostly female apparition haunting the area. After picking up a suspicious hitchhiker, a thick fog envelops their cars and sends them all over a steep cliff! Barely surviving the fall, they soon discover something even more horrifying. An ancient creature lives under the ground… listening and waiting. It’s ready to devour anyone and anything in its path and this group of friends is very much on tonight’s menu!
Shot on non-anamorphic standard definition video with a very limited budget, RESONNANCES is filled with great performances, inventive ideas and some pretty amazing low-budget special effects. Mix one part TREMORS, a heaping helping of THE THING and add a splash of THE EVIL DEAD’s directorial inventiveness you get this ambitious love letter to independent DIY genre filmmakers everywhere!

There's a decent sale on Synapse titles going on at DVDEmpire right now.
I've got Embodiment Of Evil in my shopping cart, but I need one more title for free shipping over $25. I'm hoping to avoid any titles Synapse may be double dipping on blu-ray in the future.
So far the contenders are:
Effects
Nail Gun Massacre
Blue Sunshine
Thriller: They Call Her One Eye
Also, can anyone enlighten me on the differences between the two editions of Thriller. It looks like the limited edition runs 3 minutes longer. Is the limited edition worth the extra $5? Or is this movie a possible blu-ray contender?

Thriller is great! The limited version has (I believe) a hardcore sex scene and maybe an extra scene of gore, but it's been a good year or so since I watched it, but I do distinctly remember loving the movie.

Spoke with Synapse about the unrated Intruder A.K.A. Nightcrew:The Final Checkout disc...a few things of note (taken directly from email conversation):
"The transfer and audio work are done, but we are waiting for Scott (Spiegel) to finish his commitments with HOSTEL III before we record the audio commentary. Red Shirt Pictures is putting together some cool supplements. We have a bunch of additional footage. Not just gore, but dialogue, too... We found an entirely different version of the film too, so we’ll be utilizing some of the extra footage found in that for supplements.
I wanted to have it out by Halloween, but I’m not so sure we’re gonna make it. Maybe November?"
An entirely different version of one of my top five slashers? I'm so in.Thanks for making my year, Synapse! :)

Yes, but looks like we´re not getting two versions of the movie as they say "so we’ll be utilizing some of the extra footage found in that for supplements". Looks like they´ll show the extra bits as extras.
Either way that´s cool.

I see your point, but I 100% trust Synapse.. if it is worthwhile,it will be made available. Think of the soundless dialogue scene they went to great lengths to restore in "Death Dorm",simply because it was there.
I'm thinking the second version would end up being comprised of a lot of the same footage as the one we've all seen, with some bits Spiegel evidently didn't feel the need to include.
Since this edition has the director's involvement,(and apparent approval),I'm thinking these extra scenes must not have fit in the unrated DC,and therefore made better alternate/deleted scenes to be watched separately.
Either way, any footage not seen on the crummy Dragon/Wizard video releases will be a welcome treat...fingers crossed for extended meat slicer lobotomy (as seen in the digipak workprint footage).

Nothing major, but there's a small bit of alternate footage in the trailer for the previous Intruder DVD.
Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Gb_jROtuBQ) (0:24 in)
When Renee Estevez says "This creep keeps calling here, he's driving us nuts!" the shot in the movie is slightly different. In the movie, it was shown through the rotary dial of the telephone. It is probably even the same video footage, just shown without the rotary dial overlap. So it is nothing substantial, but something that I found interesting.
bloodthrill

Yeah, there is definitely some alternate footage between the Intruder/Night Crew trailers present on other editions. One that comes to mind is Elizabeth Cox's character screaming when she realizes her ex-boyfriend is staring at her through the window while she changes. In the finished film, it appears she isn't even aware he's peeping her,and is seen calmly leaving the restroom. Also, Renee Estevez screams in the trailer when the killer grabs her by the throat, in the release version, she barely gasps before the knife falls, (and its noticeably a different take, not just a scream inserted over the same footage, like the Wizard Video re-edited trailer).
As I told Synapse,I would have thought with this being a lower budget project, every piece of film would have been on the screen, minus whatever effects turned out poorly,or the Motion Picture Idiots Of America made them snip out...but clearly there was a lot filmed, and for some reason unused, (perhaps Spiegel's commentary will shed some light on this).
Very excited to see this stuff, even if a lot of it ends up in a deleted scenes section, ( though hopefully not gore,as all of that belongs in the movie).
Am really looking forward to seeing what they do with The Intruder. Sounds like they're going to do it right.

I had thought Hands of the Ripper was coming first for some reason but in a new interview on Fangoria shows I've got them flip flopped:And the extras for TWINS OF EVIL are being completed by Ballyhoo Motion Pictures’ Daniel Griffith; I know a lot of people are waiting for that one, and we’d like to have that out in November or December, also as a Blu-ray/DVD combo.

Via Fangoria:May confirmed that Synapse has picked up COUNTESS DRACULA, the 1971 erotic vampire opus directed by Peter Sasdy and starring the late Ingrid Pitt. “We just got the HD master from MGM,” May tells Fango, adding that the COUNTESS release will follow TWINS OF EVIL, coming this November or December, and HANDS OF THE RIPPER, out mid-next year.
In addition, May reveals to us that Synapse has acquired AT MIDNIGHT I’LL TAKE YOUR SOUL and THIS NIGHT I’LL POSSESS YOUR CORPSE, the first two films by José Mojica Marins featuring his Zé do Caixao/Coffin Joe character. Having previously issued the Coffin Joe revival movie EMBODIMENT OF EVIL, the company will bring us new releases of those earlier features with extras ported over from the previous Portuguese DVD boxed set.http://fangoria.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5234:dracula-and-more-coffin-joe-coming-from-synapse&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=167
Excellent news. Hopefully for Countess Dracula they'll transfer the alternate Network UK commentary with Kim Newman, Stephen Jones and Ingrid Pitt. I recently watched it again soon after Pitt's death and enjoyed it much more that before. That it will come sooner rather than later is also a boon. Synapse has gone from frustrating me with a lack of releases to frustrating me with a girth of releases for which I must splurge.
I also hope Coffin Joe will be on Blu-ray. I know it was shot on trims, that there's no negative to speak of, and what remains is perhaps more adhesive tape than film stock, but damn it I would love to have that as film like as possible.

From what I've read, while MGM handled some distribution, it was licensed from Rank which also has Vampire Circus, Twins of Evil and Hands of the Ripper. So it would seem to make perfect sense and would cast doubt on Vampire Lovers getting the Synapse treatment.

• “Three Minutes with Danny Hicks” featurette
• “MANIAC COP Memories” featurette with Z’Dar
• Motion still gallery
• Additional Japanese TV scenes
• Theatrical trailer
• TV spots and Spanish radio spot
Michael Felsher of Red Shirt Pictures, producer of the COP supplements, is also putting together the extras for Synapse’s upcoming releases of Scott Spiegel’s supermarket-slasher opus INTRUDER and Josh Becker’s killer-cult shocker THOU SHALT NOT KILL…EXCEPT. “For INTRUDER, we have an audio commentary with Scott Spiegel and [producer] Lawrence Bender,” Felsher tells Fango, “and a making-of documentary with Scott, Lawrence, [actress] Elizabeth Cox, Greg Nicotero, Howard Berger, Robert Kurtzman, Burr Steers, Craig Stark, Ted Raimi and others. There will also be trailers, audition footage, outtakes from the original NIGHT CREW short film, deleted and extended gore scenes from the workprint version, and more.
“For THOU SHALT NOT KILL, the previous commentary [by Becker and Bruce Campbell] will be there, plus a new one with me and lead actor Brian Schulze. There will also be a documentary featuring Josh Becker, Scott Spiegel, Ted Raimi, Robert Rickman, John Manfredi, Tim Quill and others.""

I finally watched Frat House Massacre. It was maybe a little too weird for my taste. I enjoyed Camp Slaughter much more.
The big problem here is that the movie is nearly two hours long. And the "frat house massacre" doesn't begin until about an hour and a half into the movie. There are some interesting ideas here and there, but I didn't think it all really came together in the end.
They definitely captured that 70s/80s vibe though. The gore is pretty comparable to Camp Slaughter, maybe a little bit more here. They really amped up the sex and nudity this time around though. Actually, I don't think there was any nudity in Camp Slaughter, but there is quite a bit here (both male and female).
It reminded me quite a bit of Gutterballs. If you enjoyed that one, then Frat House Massacre might be worth a look.

I like this film but I´m not too familiar with it to speak for myself but some reviews state that the Arrow colors are more natural and accurate.
Like you said, the Synapse edition wins in the Audio but loses in the extras.
For me, Arrow it is, I like better extras over a more potent audio.
It seems that all Arrow editions have a weaker audio when compared to the Synapse/Blue Underground releases.

Synopsis
Celebrating 100 years of NIKKATSU PRODUCTIONS, Impulse Pictures is proud to present THE NIKKATSU EROTIC FILMS COLLECTION, a continuing series of critically acclaimed, classic “eroductions” designed to shock and titillate fans of erotic cinema.
The sexy Ryôko Watanabe stars as Ami, a jaded housewife who pitches herself, body and soul, into the Tokyo decadence of the decade in an attempt to pep up her marriage. She secretly joins the elite “Madame Machiko Society Club” to experiment with discrete sex games and the thrill of making love to anonymous men. The sexual perversion and sick depravity she is subjected to, by her clients, is much more than she bargained for. Bondage, beads and whips are only the beginning! Can she escape this secret life she has chosen, or will it destroy her forever?

Synopsis
Our series of films from NIKKATSU PRODUCTIONS continues with one of the most unusual and controversial “women in prison” films of all-time!
A group of young women is thrown into a horrible juvenile hall, due to their illegal acts. They soon wish they were back on the outside, as a gang of inmates subjects this “fresh meat” to the horrors of being locked up. Mayumi, a new inmate with a mysterious past, stands up for herself and fights back! NO ONE is going to push her around, and she hatches an escape plan to seek revenge on the person who had her incarcerated.
TRUE STORY OF A WOMAN IN JAIL: SEX HELL is a sleazy, sexually graphic and surprisingly violent entry in the “women in prison” genre. The opening uniform changing, nude medical examination sessions, communal scrubbings in the bathhouse, nimble-fingered lesbians and vicious catfights are all here… and more!

Twins Of Evil details!:
http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=8629
"Independent distributors Synapse Films have detailed their upcoming Combo Pack (Blu-ray/DVD) release of John Hough's Twins of Evil (1971), a Hammer horror classic, starring Inigo Jackson, Judy Matheson and Peter Cushing. The preliminary release date set by the distributors is July 10th.
Two beautiful orphaned identical twins, Maria and Frieda Gellhorn (Playboy centerfold models Mary and Madeleine Collinson), move to the village of Karnstein to live with their uncle Gustav Weil (played by Hammer horror favorite, Peter Cushing), a fanatical puritan and leader of the local witch-hunting "Brotherhood." The village Count (Damien Thomas, Never Let Me Go), an evil man who secretly practices Satanism, uses black magic and transforms into a vampire. Unhappy with her new life, Frieda seeks escape and tragically falls under the spell of the Count. Now overcome with an insatiable hunger for human blood, Frieda has to hide her secret from her sister, and escape her uncle's killing grasp.

MSRP is $24.95--but we don't do list prices at Hamiltons so expect a lower price on release. Street date is a tentative June 5th.
While I like Blu-ray--and own many myself--I thought it was crazy that this flick was ONLY widely available on blu (unless you want to pay ridiculous secondary prices for the old, inferior dvd release) so we jumped at the chance to do this. http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/601201-frankenhooker-dvd-exclusive-release-hamiltonbook.html

I have seen some of those little dots on some Blu-rays before however. I've heard that it's not actually going to affect the actual layer with the data pressed on it, it's just a manufacturing thing that happens once in as while...and shouldn't cause any playback issues.

If I tried selling this oh hell yeah the person would notice it. The dots and light scratches that look like rot are very visible. Not sure what to make of it just wasted my cash on this junk. Ow well live and learn when it stops playing it just stops life goes on. Will probably not be so quick buying Synapse products any time soon. I would have never noticed if not for the big ass finger smudge in the middle ring. That's what originally caught my eye and made me flip the disc. I also have no idea how to contact Synapse at all. Not sure I want the hassle nor do I want to invest anymore cash.

See this kind of attitude kind of irks me.
It's entirely possible you just got a bad disc, not necessarily that they all are bad. I'd see your point if this was say, you're second or third copy and they all shared the same problems; but this is the only one you have, and I can bet money that Synapse would replace it for you free of charge.
I got a copy of MANIAC COP back when the DVD came out and the disc was actually cracked from the middle to just near the edge. I actually didn't go to watch the movie till about two weeks later which meant I could no longer return it. All I did was mention this to Don and how I had to go get another copy and he offered to send one out to me right away, all I had to do was send him my defective disc which is the standard practice for any company.

Whoa, whoa, don't get your panties in a bunch dude. Stop for a minute. I'm not a Synapse-hater. I just wish they were a bit more creative with their packaging choices, that's all. Some of us appreciate when our favorite films come in steelbooks, digibooks, whatever - it just makes the release a little more "special".
EDIT: Many people "don't give a shit" about packaging - that's fine. Some people won't even blink twice if their discs came in sleeves made out of toilet paper - that's OK too. But some of us like special packaging. That's not a crime.

I'll wait till I see what special features the Second Sight release has before I condemn the Synapse release. I love what Synapse has been doing with obscure films, but I want a release with the most interesting special features. Once I know which release that is, then I'll either grab the Second Sight trilogy or Synapse BC 3 (along with their previous BC 2 release that I don't yet own). And I, for one, don't give a shit about packaging. Packaging is not even a factor in whether or not I buy a release. I'd rather things be in a standard case for uniformity.

BC3 was on Synapse's release schedule ever since BC2 was released. Sucks they are now finally releasing it...I'm sure they would have released it sooner but they ran into a few roadblocks...now they are peobably going to lose out on a bunch of sales due to the Steelbook...nature of the biz I guess.

The Definitive Document of the Dead is coming in November! Roy Frumkes has been working on an updated version of his original Dawn of the Dead documentary over the last decade and it's finally hitting the streets. I've been waiting for this thing since I ran into Frumkes in 2007 at a convention where Romero was a guest and he was filming a lot of interviews and such there.
THE DEFINITIVE DOCUMENT OF THE DEAD is a re-edited, remastered edition of Roy Frumkes’ portrait of George A. Romero, framed as a behind-the-scenes look at his 1979 classic DAWN OF THE DEAD. This version contains a wealth of new, exclusive material, including additional interviews with Romero’s family and friends, candid on-set footage from TWO EVIL EYES, LAND OF THE DEAD, DIARY OF THE DEAD and SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD and other surprises, plus a fresh audio commentary by Frumkes.
Plus another new Synapse release: Asylum (aka I Want to Be A Gangster). All the rest of the info in the link below:

I´m really into this recent wave of horror docs, but like you, I´m interested to know the upgrades as bonuses of this edition. The original "Document Of The Dead" and the doc of the Anchor Bay ultimate edition were great docs so this will have to be something enormous to make me get this.

Episodes include PROPHECY, TOBY, HERE COMES THE MIRROR MAN, THE MAN WHO DIDN'T BELIEVE IN GHOSTS and NUMBER SIX.

I just finished watching this. The blu-ray is great. They did a nice job in restoring the original documentary. The DVD is a mixed bag. There are some pleasent suprises, such as Judy O'Dea, Lori Cardille, Greg Nicotero and Tom Savini among many others. Frumkes is on the set for Land, Diary & Survival. Then there is needless footage of the classic "Night of the Giving Head." It's safe to say this isn't a documentary that you will want the kids around when you're watching it. The addition of Romero's daughter was the best part of the new addition. To sum it up, it's hard to sell something as the definate version when you need to obtain the Arrow Dawn Blu-ray since this new DVD doesn't have the Lost Interview. The Arrow Dawn Blu-ray also has deleted scenes which were placed within this new updated interview. Bottom line, you need both.

Am I glad I got the exclusive Blu-ray for Definitive Document of the Dead because the new cut of the doc, the so-called "Definitive" version is pretty bad... All of the new footage is shoddily placed and really doesn't offer too much insight other than cast members re-uniting and some funny family stories from Tina Romero. So having the Blu-ray of the School of Visual Arts 16mm version more than makes up for it because if I just got the stand-alone DVD of this "Definitive" version it'd be going up for sale.

Gotta agree, the "definitive" version is pretty bad. There's no transition between the various time periods of the documentary so it may be confusing for people that aren't hardcore fans. I haven't seen the Blu version of Document yet, but I've always liked that documentary so I don't mind that I picked this up.

Synapse Films update on Facebook:You know, I'm in a REALLY great mood today. Knowing what I know now, and the giant release(s) bomb that Synapse is about to drop, I have to do everything in my power to not just blurt out the names of a couple awesome titles we just acquired. Soon folks... very soon. But not soon enough for the speculation to get wildly out of control. Hahah!
Let the speculation begin, shall we?
I'm going with NotLD/Dawn. Maybe. We know Dawn and Martin are up for grabs. I don't know the true state of Night. I'm confident about Dawn, someone has to have that one and I'm sure Don would go all in on it. (Not so much on Day) Night would make an obvious pairing. I may be focusing too much on "a couple."

Oh yeah I totally forgot about that...shit, that was like 2-3 years ago that Don posted that...something about having footage of the young Myers POV shot's without the eye-hole filter? I can't remember all the details.
It would be awesome if it was Halloween with a color correction. Not sure how I feel about having an entirely new cut of the film, but seeing the footage as a bonus feature would be mind-blowing!
The Kindred would be pretty cool as well, but not quite sure it would garnish the kind of giddy tone as evident in Don's recent post. It sounds like its gotta be a big time name here.

The true state of NOTLD is that it's Public Domain. Anyone can own it (ANYone).
I'll take you up on your suggestion with Dawn Of The Dead (1978) however since that does look likely; it's not with Anchor Bay anymore (I checked the site), Synapse just release The Definitive Document Of The Dead and that seems now like a possible clue.
I wonder though if the annoucement will be the 3 secret titles that Don announced long ago. That said, my choices are Bad Taste and Meet The Feebles (with Bad Taste, seeing is how this year marks the 25th anniversary of the film, Peter Jackson's filmmaking career and his newest film The Hobbit, a new release is definitely in order).

Synapse wouldn't release NotLD without the involvement of Image Ten who produced it and still have the original negative. Don's had a lot of involvement with Image Ten on the Elite release and the Weinstein release. I'm sure he's been working towards that goal of getting it under the Synapse banner.
I'd forgotten about those "three titles" which I was shocked to learn WASN'T Vampire Circus, Twins of Evil or Hands of the Ripper once announced. "What could possibly be bigger than that?" I wonder if that fell through. I don't think it's anything else Hammer on his mind as the big titles like Dracula and Frankenstein are out of the question.
Bad Taste and Meet the Feebles has been in the back of my mind as well. They're not as "huge" but to actually work with Peter Jackson would be huge so I could see him being as excited about that as anything else.

Awesome. I love me some Roman Porono.
B.) Synapse just released The Definitive Document Of The Dead. A possible clue no less.
Synapse had that from the start and Anchor Bay's release was a special deal as far as I know.
But I actually suspect now that there may not be a Dawn of the Dead release from Synapse because they re-released Document. It seemed like a natural pairing and Synapse doesn't usually do a lot of tie in re-releases (unlike say Blue Underground). In fact they'll often delay things to finish out a pairing (like Street Trash) and be upfront about it. So I almost feel that when Don May knew he wasn't getting Dawn he just released Document without it.
But then again it makes a lot of business sense to make as much money from Document as possible and then release it with Dawn. Or release Dawn stand alone and then a few years later pair it with Document to tie up a few loose ends of cash.
It seems though Demons 1 and 2 were the titles he was most excited about. I'm not expecting anything "bigger" than those any time soon from Synapse anymore.

For a while I've thought of Synapse as the most customer friendly of all independent DVD labels, but something happened tonight that sealed it. I had ordered Six Days in Roswell from Amazon during Black Friday last November. I finally opened it today to find the disc bouncing around in the box, this caused a small scratch on the disc. The movie played fine, but when I hit special features on the main menu, the movie just started up again. I'm friends with Don May on Facebook and asked him if this was a known glitch of the disc (which was one of the first Synapse released). He responded that he had never heard of it before, but if Amazon wouldn't accept the return (as it had been a few months) that he could set me up with a new copy of the disc. I was able to process the return at Amazon, but the fact that he offered, let alone responded to a PM on Facebook from someone he doesn't know, shows how much Synapse cares about their customers.

The Blu-ray would be the way to go, as you'll likely get more enjoyment out of the 66-minute School for Visual Arts version of the original Document. The "Definitive" version isn't very good... All of the new footage and tie ins to the new films is rather mediocre...

Holy shit! One of the strangest and long sought after films from Canuxploitation's past is being erected from the grave via Synapse's erotic imprint Impulse Pictures!

nice review. i guess its because i've only seen their Nikatsu Roman Porno releases, but i didn't realize Impulse released hardcore stuff as well. i'm still interested, but the fact that its hardcore makes me hesitate a bit. call me a prude, but i don't actually own anything hardcore (In the Realm of the Senses and The ABCs of Love and Sex don't count, do they?), and it feels like i'd be crossing some kind of line by doing so. kind of like Jerry having to get orgy friends, or something like that....

Trust me Dave, you already have "Hardcore DVD owning" friends. ;)
But seriously, I wouldn't pop your cherry on these Impulse titles. Look into something like THE OPENING OF MISTY BEETHOVEN, or AFTERNOONS WITH PAMELA MANN for your first hardcore purchase.
That said, I understand your compulsion to keep going with the Impulse line. Due to the Nikkatsu series, Synapse has bought a enough good will with me I will be blind buying just about anything from the Impulse line for the foreseeable future. So much so I plan on getting both the DVD the BD of FAIRY IN A CAGE.

My thoughts exactly. And I'd define any movie as hardcore when you actually see the penetration of an orifice. :sperm:
So Synapse still hasn't announced the three titles?
I wanted to touch on this before but forgot. As far as I'm aware those three titles remain a mystery. It was many years ago, so maybe they trickled out over the past few years but I've never heard what specifically he was talking about. All I remember was it was teased just before Vampire Circus/Twins of Evil/Hands of the Ripper were announced but then Don followed up that Hammer wasn't what he was teasing.
Don has already dropped four worthy titles since his original remark about a "couple" of titles for us to speculate on. So it's hard to get a read on what exactly he means which I guess it the point.

i didn't realize Impulse released hardcore stuff as well.
The very first Impulse release (JUSTINE & JULIETTE) was hardcore, followed by another Swedish adult title THE SECOND COMING OF EVA. Then there's the pair of oddball hardcore docudramas REFINEMENTS IN LOVE and APHRODISIAC: THE SEXUAL SECRET OF MARIJUANA, and the recently released early '80s U.S. adult films SAME TIME EVERY YEAR and SERENA: AN ADULT FAIRY TALE.
The SCHOOLGIRL REPORT films, the Nikkatsu pinku eiga titles, and the three Brazilian pornochanchada releases (THE CHICK'S ABILITY, VIOLENCE AND SEX, and PORNO) are all softcore, along with the Christina Lindberg titles (MAID IN SWEDEN, WIDE OPEN, and ANITA, though hardcore versions of ANITA do exist around the world).
A pretty interesting variety, when you look at the label as a whole.

So, I've just reviewed Sexcula (http://the-manchester-morgue.blogspot.com/2013/03/sexcula-impulse-pictures-dvd-review.html) for my site, and I think I have the first Sexcula DVD review out there. Such an odd movie, I'm not sure I liked it (I'm not big on porn like this) but it's pretty fascinating nonetheless. My review is a bit spoileriffic but there isn't much to the story to spoil anyway.
