Awesome news as it was just confirmed that the MGM Midnite Movies line is indeed returning this September 11th. More title are coming our way in addition to Witchfinder General and Food of the Gods.
Much of the Midnite Movies dvd releases have been from the AIP vaults. The two aforementioned titles are no exception. There are a lot more films that MGM has the rights to that would perfectly fit the bill as part of the Midnite Movies line.
What are some of the films you would like to see MGM release as Midnite Movies?
Here are a few AIP films that instantly come to mind for me:
THE CRIMSON CULT (a.k.a. CURSE OF THE CRIMSON ALTAR): this stars Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee, and Barbara Steele. Loosely based on HP Lovecraft.
ABBY: blaxploitation ripoff of THE EXORCIST directed by William Girdler (GRIZZLY, THE MANITOU) and stars William Marshall (BLACULA).
SUGAR HILL: voodoo, zombie, blaxploitation hybrid featuring Robert Quarry (COUNT YORGA) as the villain.
THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN: this movie has been brought up by others recently on this site. Based on a real life Texarkana serial killer wearing a hood.
THE SAVAGE SEVEN: bikers versus Native American Indians. Directed by Richard Rush (PSYCH-OUT, HELLS ANGELS ON WHEELS, THE STUNT MAN).
SAVAGE SISTERS: shot in the Phillipines. Stars Sid Haig and Gloria Hendry (LIVE AND LET DIE, BLACK CAESAR, BLACK BELT JONES) along with other ass kicking babes shooting up the tropical scenery.

Hospital Massacre. It's long long overdue. MGM also suppose to own Jennifer which needs to be on DVD as well.

MGM probably has the rights to Hospital Massacre seeing that it was a Cannon Pictures release
I'm pretty sure that MGM owns the AIP film Jennifer. I've never seen this, but it sounds like a great late 70's reworking of Willard done with snakes.

It's more like a Carrie rip-off with snakes instead of telekinesis :D
Fun flick though. I used to own the old Vestron tape but it's long gone.

The best part is that MGM won't run out of films anytime in the near future to include in this specialty line. They currently own a lot of horror, science fiction, cult, and exploitation films that fit perfectly into the retro Midnite Movies roster and have never been available on dvd.

Great movie! This double feature was supposed to be released about three years ago if I recall? Another AIP gem long overdue on dvd!
I regret that I no longer have my widescreen vhs of Burn Witch Burn. It was an import release, not a bootleg.
Have you ever seen this movie as Night of the Eagle? Not sure how much different the film is? I've only seen it as Burn Witch Burn.

I've heard good things about The Town That Dreaded Sundown so I've been wanting to see that. I suspect, as I postulated in the Burning/Beyond/ROTLD thread, that if history repeats itself they'll pair unreleased catalog titles together with the now OOP single disc editions.

I wouldn't mind seeing some of the OOP singles paired up with unreleased titles, as long as we still get a decent number of films making their debut on dvd.
I'm still missing a lot of the OOP dvds and would like to pick up Planet of the Vampires, The Beast Within, Island of Dr. Moreau '77, and Dr. Goldfoot & the Bikini Machine.

Who owns the MGM vault now? Before it was Sony but now is it Fox? And if so, do we have any Fox titles that merit crossing over to the Midnites (Frozen Dead, Hammer's The Nanny, Curse of the Fly?) Just being silly here, but it would be wishful thinking on my part now that Anchor Bay is with Starz, and I'm unsure of their current Fox affiliations.

I tried hard thinking of Fox titles that could be released on the Midnite label but damn, that's a tough one. One that came to mind is Spellbinders (1988) which CBS/Fox released on tape back in the days but it was actually a MGM/UA production. Same goes for Still Of The Night (1982) I guess.

Sony only owns 20% of MGM and while at first they had distribution of MGM the other 80% of the share holders voted to have Fox become the distributor. Fox does not "own" any of MGM, they just distribute. Just like, ironically, Anchor Bay distributes those select Fox titles. ;)

I'm hoping some more Midnite Movies will be announced.
Glad to see The Bat People (1974) is coming to dvd. This AIP movie was shot at Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico (amazing place I visited for the first time last year) and the creature f/x were done by Stan Winston. The only film Winston did before this was Gargoyles (1972), which was also shot at Carlsbad Caverns.
I never did get The Beast Within single feature from MGM, so that double feature will definitely be a purchase.

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.
Konga caught me by surprise, lucky for me I never got the single disc although I wanted to. They're also doing a couple of public domain movies like Phantom from 10,000 Leagues, Curse of the Faceless Man and Yongary. I wonder if they're doing what Fox (their distributor) does with some other public domain titles and colorize them? Not sure what they could do to Yongary, which is already in color, besides releasing a different cut. Seems like the easiest thing to do would be pair Konga up with say Reptilicus (OOP) and leave it at that. Very odd.
I'm hoping some more Midnite Movies will be announced.
What? The seven Midnite Movie sets, 12 movies total, and four other horror movies from MGM aren't enough? Come now.
I think the release schedule already is insane enough when you combine what we know, and more's to come too. I think I'm quite satisfied for awhile thank you.

Didn't mean to sound greedy or demanding. :o I'm just disappointed that some of the titles I was really looking forward to didn't make it this time, especially Sugar Hill. Every time Midnite Movies are announced, my initial reaction tends to be "Why wasn't this released?" Sooner or later they will I'm sure.

Movies Unlimited posted from listings for the boxsets:Roger Corman Collection
Ray Milland's fear of "The Premature Burial" (1962) becomes real when he is buried alive. Roger Corman's Edgar Allan Poe shocker co-stars Hazel Court, Alan Napier. "'X'--The Man with X-Ray Eyes" (1963) finds Milland experimenting on himself, only to find that too much vision is dangerous. Co-stars Diana Van Der Vlis, Don Rickles, and Dick Miller. Corman then corrals "The Young Racers" (1963), who "treated beautiful women as if they were fast cars...ROUGH!" Filmed on real Grand Prix tracks, this action-packed drama stars Mark Damon, Luana Anders, and Patrick Magee. "The Trip" (1967), written by Jack Nicholson and directed by Corman, stars Peter Fonda as a movie producer who sees LSD as the escape from his problems. Co-stars Dennis Hopper, Bruce Dern, and Susan Strasberg. Corman's "Bloody Mama" (1970) boasts Shelly Winters as gun-toting Ma Barker, and Robert De Niro, Don Stroud, and Robert Walden as her sadistic sons. Corman's last film for A.I.P is a "Gas-s-s-s" (1971), an offbeat look at a world where no one lives past 25. Cindy Williams, Ben Vereen star. Also includes "A Bucket of Blood" and "The Wild Angels." Soundtrack: English. Four-disc set.
Vincent Price Gift Set, Vol. 1
Five-disc set includes "Tales of Terror," "Twice-Told Tales," "Witchfinder General," "The Abominable Dr. Phibes," "Dr. Phibes Rises Again," "Theater of Blood," and "Madhouse" (1974).
MSRP for both is $39.99.
I'll have all the titles in the Vincent Price one but they've got the Corman one split split things I want and things I already have, so I don't know if I'll wait for some possible single discs or if it's cheap enough buy it anyways.

What I want to know is, where's THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN? For Pete's Sake it was part of the Midnite Movie line way, WAY back when they only produced VHS. It's taking an eternity to get to DVD!
I'm almost certain that MGM still has the rights to AIP's The Incredible Melting Man. Another long overdue release.
Witchfinder General (a.k.a. Conqueror Worm), Master of the World, and Burn Witch Burn were all released on vhs back in 2000. Witchfinder General is the only film among this group making its Midnite Movies dvd debut later this year.
I'm sure there are other films that were available on vhs in the Midnite Movies line that still haven't gotten the dvd treatment.

OK, it looks like it's the MGM double features were the ones delayed from 9/11:
RETURN OF DRACULA/THE VAMPIRE
THE BEAST WITH A MILLION EYES/PHANTOM FROM 10,000 LEAGUES
PHARAOH'S CURSE/CURSE OF THE FACELESS MAN
THE BEAST WITHIN/THE BAT PEOPLE
KONGA/YONGARY
MONSTER FROM THE DEEP
So we'll be having a round two of Midnite Movies this year. Softens the blow a bit. ;)
Splitting it up into two rounds is fine with me. It was nice when MGM used to do two rounds per year, typically in the spring and late summer.

^Yep, here's the latest from DVD Drive-In:MGM's batch of new Midnite Movies double features have now been confirmed for a September 11 street date, making this one of the biggest Septembers for classic horror/sci-fi DVD releases ever! The following four double features have been confirmed: RETURN OF DRACULA/THE VAMPIRE (John Beal) (new hi-def transfers), PHANTOM FROM 10,000 LEAGUES/THE BEAST WITH A MILLION EYES (new hi-def transfer for PHANTOM), THE BEAST WITHIN/THE BAT PEOPLE and KONGA/YONGARY, MONSTER FROM THE DEEP. We have added the covers for these to the MGM/Fox Halloween page, so you can check them out by clicking HERE (http://www.dvddrive-in.com/features/mgmfox07halloweendvds.htm). You'll also find some additional art there for MGM's upcoming Vincent Price and Roger Corman box sets!http://www.dvddrive-in.com/index.htm
Seriously, even for the rich this has to be a killer month. I've lost count of all the discs and boxsets coming out in September.

Amazon usually ships my pre-orders a day ahead of the release date (a couple times it was two days ahead). I was never fortunate enough to get a dvd from Amazon before the street date. Usually they arrive on the street date or a day later.

They did, but they were all older OOP single feature discs and I think most of them had since been released as double features. Still, it couldn't hurt to wait. Here's something about the disc that's been posted and agreed upon in the ABUK forum (http://www.anchorbay.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=1753&page=12):
Yep, this would be the completely original version - the 'director's cut' if you will.
The other versions are:
- the continental cut, all the violence + gratuitous nudity
- the trimmed BBFC cut, with the violence missing.
- The US version, re-titled, re-cut and with a different soundtrack.
Would have been nice if MGM had included some of these alternate scenes on the DVD release, but I think a pristine print of the 'director's cut' is something worth celebrating on its own
The R1 disc is the "director's cut" as originally intended, but if you want the "continental cut" you'll still need to have the R2 release...but apparently the new R1 disc has an awesome looking transfer from all reports.

Thanks for the information Katatonia. That makes me feel better about the release. I have a decent version of the the continental cut, so I guess I should be happy to have the director's cut looking seemingly awesome. I haven't actually seen it so, who knows, maybe it is better than the version I have. I wish it would hurry and get here come on amazon!

The Food of the Gods
Tales From the Crypt / Vault of Horror (Double Feature)
Chosen Survivors / The Earth Dies Screaming
The House on Skull Mountain / The Mephisto Waltz
Devils Of Darkness / Witchcraft
Gorilla at Large/Mystery on Monster Island
Two are MGM and four are Fox. Why these ones I have no idea but never look a gift horse in the mouth. There are reportedly other older MM titles also at this price. Not all of the new ones or old ones are. Here are some of the older ones:

I think people just went crazy buying up all these discs because Amazon.com sent me an e-mail early today saying they'd be unable to meet expected delivery dates and that I should get it between 09/27/2007 - 10/04/2007.
Then later I got an e-mail saying it all shipped and should be here by the 24th, so I'm guessing they re-ordered a boat load of these discs. Hopefully that means they'll be coming back to B&M stores in larger numbers as well.
Which may also mean that MM's not only meeting but beating expectations and that they'll be plenty more where that's from I'm sure. Sony has also recently put the word out that they'll be digging deeper into their back catalog. Since they have direct access to MGM's sales numbers I'm sure they'll be taking a close look at MM's new found success. If Fox, MGM and Sony are all going to jump on this bandwagon we've got some good things coming I'm sure.
