In 1983, four acclaimed directors combined to put Twilight Zone: The Movie into theaters. John Landis, Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante and George Miller each directed one of four separate segments, bridged together into a single movie via bookend sequences that feature Dan Ackroyd and his classic quote, "You wanna see something REALLY scary?"

Unfortunately, a tragically scary thing occurred during the filming of this movie: actor Vic Morrow, the star of the first segment, lost his life in a helicopter accident on the set; two child actors also died at the same time during that incident. Nevertheless, the 101-minute feature went on to appear in theaters to great fan acclaim, with a cast that included (in roles both large and small) Morrow, Ackroyd, Albert Brooks, John Larroquette, Scatman Crothers, Selma Diamond, Priscilla Pointer, Kathleen Quinlan, Nancy Cartwright, Dick Miller, Bill Mumy, John Lithgow, Donna Dixon, Carol Serling, and narrator Burgess Meredith. Lithgow was especially praised for his reenactment of William Shatner's part in the remake of "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet".

Fans of The Twilight Zone have been anticipating a DVD release of The Movie for many years, and it is our policy here at TVShowsOnDVD to stick to the DVDs of the actual TV shows, not the films that either come from a show, or inspire a show. For example, we don't have listings here at our site for Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, or the original Kristy Swanson-starring Buffy the Vampire Slayer film which the television show was spun off from. Or even The X-Files: Fight The Future, a feature film that was in theaters between the fifth and sixth seasons of that series. However, for every rule, there is an exception, and we feel this is a good exception to make. Fans have been waiting for this for a long, long time!

We have learned that Warner Home Video will release Twilight Zone: The Movie on DVD, Blu-ray Disc, and HD DVD formats on October 9th. The DVD version will be $19.97 SRP, as you can see below with the early cover art (subject to change). The hi-def format, Blu-ray and HD DVD, will sell for $28.99 SRP each. Extras, if any, are not available yet. More info *might* come out of the San Diego Comic Con this weekend, so stay tuned.

I hope there are some good extras!! A couple of years ago I found a VHS tape and made a DVD from it. If I buy the DVD, I want some bonus materials!!

I would imagine so, if it's coming out on all 3 formats.

Here's the pre-artwork, as long as the link works:

I've been wanting this on dvd for a very long time. I don't like the Nightmare at 20,000 Feet segment remake with John Lithgow nearly as much as the original with William Shatner, but overall I thought this was an excellent movie.

Great news and thanks for sharing! :)

It has to have extras, or else I'll just stick with the HD2DVD version I have already.
It's nice to see all these titles that have been on everyone's wishlist for years finally getting released!

Wait... I have to ask, is this for REAL? Somebody pinch me. I think I need it.

I don't remember the movie very well. In fact, it's supposed to have 4 sections, right? So, the one about the old folks came right after the one about the jerk who hated all the other races?

Anyway, the thing I'm excited about is the part directed by Joe Dante. All the other parts, I have to admit, bored me. But that part from Dante was worth sitting through the movie all by itself. And the opening with... Dan Aykroyd, was it? The "Midnight Special" scene. That was one of the coolest things I've seen in any movie ever. Does anyone know which director directed that sequence? Since it technically was a 5th part of a 4-part movie. Yeah it was an intro, but it was so memorable... You know.

Landis directed the "Midnight Special" intro. The conclusion to that one made me jump!
I wonder if they'll try to downplay the controversy surrounding the movie. There was a special about it on E. It would make a good extra if included.

Now, where's the street date for the Poltergeist SE? :D

Hahaha... have you ever checked out rotten cotton's "on the road" pictures?... they have one of John Landis and under it they wrote "murderer?"

Haha

I do know. It's definitely my favorite part of the film! You can check it out here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08YxwTzPwBQ).

Thanks. I jumped too. I totally wasn't expecting it. And now that I know this, by the way, I'm so going to use it the next time people go on about Landis not being a Master of Horror. :p

That must have been some kind of retribution for Landis, though. In that interview with Mick Garris (on Criterion's Videodrome DVD), he mentioned cutting out a big scare in American Werewolf and never putting it back into the movie.

The Spielberg episode kind of sucks, IMO it's rather boring, so I always skip it. The rest of the film is terrific, and Quinlan is a very hot woman.

Oddly, not my favorite flick in terms of quality but it has a special place in my heart so I kind of have to buy it for my collection.

The first movie my family ever rented the day my Dad brought home our 1st VCR! :)

Joe Dante's segment and the intro wih Ackroyd and Brooks in the car are by far my favorite parts of the movie. This is one of those movies that I've seen a billion times, and I've been awaiting a dvd release forever. It's totally a classic in my mind. Can't wait!

If there are any extras, my guess is that they'll mention everything about the movie except the fact that three people died due to the negligence of Landis. You can bet the death footage won't be included as an easter egg, that's for sure.

LUCIO!!!!
