So, I had an idea for a thread, or maybe series of threads etc. Maybe people can weigh in on whether this is worthwhile or not, or maybe the moderators can...If it's a bad idea, I won't be hurt if this thread is closed...

The idea is that whenever there are waves of genre releases, people could weigh in on what they've found, what stores are stocking, and for how much etc. For this particular thread, for example, it's Wal-Mart...There could be other threads for say, Circuit City, or Borders, or (cough) Best Buy etc. I dunno...maybe it's stupid.

Basically, the impetus for me creating this was that I happened to go to Wal-Mart this evening, and was surprised to see the following titles in quantity on their shelves:

Deadly Friend 9.96
The Hand 9.96
Eyes of a Stranger 9.96
Dr. Giggles 9.96

Eaten Alive 2-Disc Special Edition 14.96

Cujo 25th Anniversary 14.44

and their price on "Bug" was 16.99

I live in Oregon, btw, so I also think that if this thread continues, maybe folks should also weigh in on what region their reports come from.

Anyway, like I already said, perhaps this is a waste of forum space, so if these kinds of things are better off reported elsewhere, not a problem...Otherwise, if it ends up serving the intended purpose, then YAY!

This thread is a good idea. Its nice to be updated on great deals. I'm all for it.

But maybe put this in the For Sale/Trade, Coupons/Bargains forum

Just a suggestion. :)

My WM had the exact same list and prices MrKate has in the first post, plus The Ferryman for $17.96 or so. Unfortunately they didn't have or ever had the Twisted Terror boxsets, just the 4 indiviual discs (which would cost more than getting the 6 disc box at Best Buy, who amazingly did have it. Normal price at BB is $49.99 but it's $35.99 this week only.)

Like I said in another thread, it's sad but true that WM has the best horror selection of any store in my town.:(

So I think it is safe to assume that you guys, like me, still like going to stores to buy films, even though many online retailers often have them cheaper?

Because as much as I enjoy shopping online - the low prices, the comfort of not having to do anything but pay - there's just something about being in the store, taking your time, browsing around, maybe seeing titles that you hadn't thought about, or even titles you never knew about ... Ah, the joy of real shopping :)

I like being able to pick a copy that doesn't have a ripped or bent slipcover, and being able to see if I'll be able to take security labels off without ripping normal cover. Plus the finding something that looks cool I've never heard of is fun and can't be replaced by clicking on a website.

Also with real shopping comes the joy of having your product WHEN you buy it not days later.

That is also a big factor. Even though most online retailers are reliable, it always seems the discs I want to watch right away are the ones that get lost or take longer to arrive. Murphy's Law, chapter 75, verse 12.

I used to LOVE going to stores, perusing their selection, seeing old favorites and then finding things I didn't realize were out. Whether or not they "get it" anymore, many addicted DVD buyers (myself DEFINITELY included) would end up spending much, much more than originally intended that way.

As it is though, and a major reference to Best Buy, that is not the case anymore...Bad service, uninterested clerks, and shitty selection has literally almost wiped out my presence in stores 100%. I'm sure that stores will not go bust by me not making appearances anymore, but I know I'm not alone...

I used to really care about patronizing local stores, figuring that the more business I throw in the direction of local merchants (even if they be chains) the more reason there is to have employees etc. That is the same reason I used to avoid shopping at Wal-Mart, just because of their history of business practices...

As it is anymore though, with the continued bullshit attitude I get when I try to give my business to local stores, I no longer give a shit whether I'm giving them my business or not. I go to WalMart first these days, because it's easy enough to see if they have something or not. If they don't, and I happen to find myself in the vicinity of another retailer that may have something, I'll try them. I will no longer drive to these stores specifically for a movie...I will also no longer call them.

Pretty much everything else I just get online and do the wait. It sucks, but it's better than losing the rest of my sanity or going ballistic on yet another retail store, exploding my blood pressure any further.

Fuck em all, and they deserve to go out of business, as far as I feel.

Haven't watched The Hand yet, but Deadly Friend is 80's cheese fucking gold! Get it unless you have no sense of humor. I hadn't seen that in forever and it just cracked me up to no end the other night, highly recomended.

I haven't seen Tha Hand since I was a kid, but still pull my arm in when driving and someone's coming at me, so I think it's fair to say it left a lasting impression on me. Was going to watch it the other night but grabbed Eyes of a Stranger instead, which I also recomend in a serious slasher way.

Dr. Giggles might be the quickest price drop in history, although they were still $9.96 here.:D I'll give this flick one more try as I should love it in a cheese way, but have always just hated it. Maybe the widescreen version will show me something I've missed in the past.

Do any of you here know if this has happend at ALL the wallmarts?

This is a prime example of what Tower Records used to do with they're inventory. Which is one of the many reason they went out of bussines. I can't understand why wallmart would do something this stupid. I had $60 to burn tonight at wallmart. I was more then ready to buy some of those paramount horror dvd's. Instead all wallmart got from me was the finger. I drove 30 miles for nothing. To me this is poor bussines practice. The guy I spoke with told me they packed up all those DVD's and shipped them back. Now that was real freaking smart.

Nothing like ending the Halloween sale just as October starts.
I swear the world is run by morons. They did the same shit here with the "Dreadtime" double feature dvds from Sony. They all had a ticket for Resident Evil 3, but they pulled them off the floor and sent them to God-knows-fucking-where a week before the movie opened. Now it might just be me, but I would think to leave them there until the movie played a week or at least opened, as you'll have shoppers probably planning on seeing the movie anyway who would jump at a chance to get 2 movies for a couple bucks factoring in the ticket. Even better, the WM here is just a mile or so up the road from Showcase Cinemas!
If I was managing it I would've set up a booth outside Showcase to sell the remaining dvds with tickets. I'm sure the theater wouldn't care as they just write $10.50 (max value) on every movie cash ticket even though the real ticket price is $7.25 day and $9.25 at night.

I had the unfortunate experience of working as an overnight stocker at Wal-Mart for almost two years, and I can say that every week they get a shipment of special event dvds which they only have for a week. Most of the time, after a week they tore down the display and and shipped the discs back. Every now and then they'd throw them into the five dollar bin if they could. It pissed me off when I could only buy 10 of the Midnite movies because I had to wait for my next check to get more, which two days before I got it they shipped them out.

Yes they been changing the halloween section per week. If you scroll up PAGE 2 there was a good discusion on this. So it does in fact appear WM is going to change that HALLOWEEN shelf every dam week. Which is pretty fucking stupid in my opinion. I was ranting a while ago about that $5 sale. I don't think it's too late though depending on what movie you wanted go to FYE. They have a nice section of $5 DVD's the had about 80% of the same titles WM had last week. There was also few others like Return of the living dead part 2 etc. etc. All $5!!!!!!!! Yeah they're prices are shit. The only thing I like about them is the fact that they have USED dvd's!! The FYE I went to had allot out of print dvds. For example they had Sleepaway Camp box set with red cross cover, Scream box set, John Carpenter 4 dvd box set, The old original Halloween dvd from anchor bay and alot of older "brand new" anchor bay tittles for $7. So hopefully you will find what you want.

I may be the odd man out but I think it's a great idea to change the Halloween section every week. The first selection they put out on the shelves I either owned every title already or wasn't interested in. At least this way there's a greater probability of Walmart putting something on display that I'll actually want in my collection.

Does anybody know if the new Pumpkinhead release is a remastered edition, or is it identical to the old release but with a new cover?

Just a new cover, but it is badass.

Just like with the Terminator Holohgraph cover MGM did...i guess it's a limited edition cover because i never knew that a Pumpkinhead holo cover exsisted, same with the Carrie DVD.

I think MGM just gave up on Child's Play, it should've been revisited by now. I have a custom dvd made from the MonstersHD version which puts th existing dvd to shame even in it's down-converted state. They can't say that a great print doesn't exist, cuz MHD has one that's fucking perfect.

Well I went to walmart tonight. I'm officially done with walmart. Once again same old shit they have not changed the horror section. Despite having 10 walmarts near me I'm starting to realize when it comes to DVD selections walmart sucks. I must have easily seen 13 empty shelves at the store I went to. Shit and to think I went to SUPERWM. Anyway even if this thread continues getting updated I won't be bothering going to walmart for DVD's no more. They hardly ever change any of the inventory. The one time they had the paramount DVD horror section they robbed me of buying any. The following day I went back they got rid of all those DVDs. I also just blew $20 driving to a shit hole. So If I come off pissed off don't take it personal.

There's a Fry's electronics about 50 miles from me that is newer. They have about a MILLION DVDs. No I am not lying they have HUGE as hell DVD stock. I'd gladly take pictures but Fry's prohibit the use of any cameras. Which of course I am aware of sense I used to work for them. The store I went to is recently opened so I'm going to do more of my shopping there. Plus I don't know nobody who works there so I don't have to annoyed with people bugging me with nonsense.

They had about 2000 DVD's in the horror section. Of course when I went I was strapped for cash!!! So I'll hit them up this weekend!

Seriously dude. You don't like Wal-Mart, yada yada. Enough with the bitching. This thread is to let us know what deals are going on at the store and the availability of certain new releases. This isn't a thread to flame the store.

one of the walmarts here got rid of the "$5 bin" and made it a $5 4-sided shelf! That is very nice and I've found stuff I normally wouldn't have.

This week, Walmart has (I'm rounding up the price amount):

Hostel 2 ($20 unless your store has it on sale, also two pack with Anatomy)
Hostel DC ($19)
Fido ($20)
The Tripper ($20)
Saw 3 DC ($20)
Saw Trilogy ($30)

I don't recall seeing any other horror sitting out. The halloween dvd promotion shelf hasn't changed yet either. lol

Yep.
You can also get the Saw 3 DC for $17.99 with a ticket for Saw 4. I think the Trilogy was $34.99 in BB's ad, but also has movie cash.

Not yet, but I'm sure I won't be able to pass it up with the ticket. I looked at cover scans and it's listed as 7 minutes longer. Can't remember how long the deleted scenes on the unrated ran, but since there's no d.s. listed on the D.C., I'd guess they're added back in.

DTS 6.1 audio, a new "villains" commentary track, muisc video, and SAW IV preview. Not certain what else is different... Here's what the back cover lists though: http://images.dvdempire.com/gen/movies/1359040bh.jpg

The video seems to be a tad brighter in the beginning, and the brand new 6.1 dts-es sound is amazing. The beginning is ridiculous in 6.1 surround sound. There are two new major scenes and a new ending, and just a little bit more gore than the unrated single disc version from last year. It is a definite upgrade from the single disc unrated version. Also the commentary with Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith is amazing.

I picked up "The Running Man" Special Edition a two disk set for 5 bucks yesterday, I had never seen it, and god damn, its a freak'n awesome 80's action movie if your into that sort of thing. I was total unaware that the Smash TV Nintendo game was based on a movie. Strange extras on the disk as well. A documentary called "Lockdown on Main Street" about how Americans are loosing their rights in a post 9/11 world. Well worth 5 bucks.

O.K., I can't count.
The DC is 8 minutes longer than the old unrated if the runtimes on the boxes are correct. I haven't watched the DC yet, but refreshed my memory of the old disc's deleted scenes today. There's 2, one where some dude tries to pick up Amanda in front of an apartment building asking her to come see a friend's band, and one where Amanda and the nurse get into a fight near the end of the film. Both of these run a total of 5 and a half minutes and the fight seems like an extended clip.
Not sure if I'm watching this or Hostel 2 tonight. Definitly one or the other, followed by Rottweiler!:D (I know Rott will probably border on sucking, but the trailer on the Cujo disc just looked too fucking fun. I've always enjoyed Yuzna's films too so I doubt it will be a complete bust.)

HoldenMcNeil

The fight is in the DC, and another scene, Amanda's nightmare, which makes sense why she did what she did. Also there is a new ending.

A new ending? Hmmmmmm, now I want to pop it in right away.
New ending sounds like reason to keep the unrated disc after all. I was tempted to for the different extras anyway, but man my collection is getting out of hand. I need more bookcases and a bigger room to put them in.

Speaking of new endings, I did check out the "Director's Cut" ending on Hostel. It was cool to see something so completly different, but I like the original ending at least 10X more. I also like how they have the option to watch the unrated version (with all the comms from the old disc) or UR with DC ending (or DC ending on it's own). For Hostel the old disc is now completly worthless as the DC has everything it does and more, then a second disc on top of that.

Cheapest I saw it today was $12.99 at CC, although it's $14.99 stickered price everywhere else (not sure about Wal-Mart). Within a month or 2 it will lose the slipcover and drop to $9.99, then shortly after that will end up on sale for $5.99-7.99 some week at one of the chains. That is if it's like every other dvd that comes out.:)

Wal-Mart has some Warner "4-Packs" out for $10.96 each. The Horror titles were:

Wolfen/Body Snatchers/Coma/Bad Moon

Horror of Dracula/Dracula Has Risen from the Grave/Taste the Blood of Dracula/Dracula A.D. 1972

Both sets have every film presented in widescreen. Two flipper discs in a standard keepcase. Same disc content as the regular individual disc releases.

I noticed these as well, along with a Stephen King set. So.. I take it these are not compromised at all in PQ/AQ? Still haven't bought any double/triple/quadruple packs with this fear in mind. Hell of a deal at <$3.00/each movie, though.. curious. :)

I can only speak for the two sets that I mentioned, and purchased. The disc content is the exact same as the old individual DVD releases. So no, the A/V quality is not compromised.

Allot of times stuff is there. WM has a habit of hiding display racks. They put an entire rack of paramount horror titles in they're photo dept on time. I found transformers the movie a week early sitting in some boxes they left next to the tv sets. Sometimes you really have to look around. They do that allot and it's discouraging at times.

It's not Wal-Mart, but I just bought Veronica Mars seasons 1 and 2 + Firefly for $48 TOTAL at Target! $15 bucks for each set. Those weren't the only ones, either, but I honestly can't remember the others because I got so crazy I had to buy them instantly before someone came up to me and said it was a mistake.

The offer runs til the 17th, so I guess if you don't have those sets already and are a fan, these are must-buys!

Oh, and the 3rd season of VM was $40 which ain't to bad either ...

I finally found a Walmart with those 4 movie packs. They had the display case up in the Christmas section!?!?! Anyway I picked up the Stephen King set for my girlfriend since she's a big SK fan and at $10, its a steal. For those curious, the SK set includes: Dolores Claiborne, Cat's Eye, Dreamcatcher and Creepshow. All movies are widescreen.

Went to Wal-Mart (against my better judgment) to look for these and came up empty handed. I did find the King Kong remake two-disc edition for $9.44, so I tried to pick it up but the cashier rang it up as $15. It seems the single disc was the version on sale and someone decided to stock that slot with six copies of the two-disc instead. That's what I get, I suppose.
