View Full Version : 10 years of DVD: So what's left?

It's hard to believe that DVD has been around for a decade now, and yet there are still tons of movies left to see the light of day. Are there any personal favorites that you're still listlessly waiting to see a legit release for? Here's a few of mine:
The Boogens
Time Walker
The Children (Troma doesn't count!)
Frightmare (Troma never counts!)
Batman (60s TV series)
The Reincarnation of Peter Proud
Don't Go To Sleep
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark
Unsub (80s TV series)
La Orgia de los Muertos aka The Hanging Woman aka Beyond the Living Dead
Cannibal Girls
Incredible Melting Man (but available in R2)
*and yeah, I'm keenly aware that this type of thread has been done before.

And now presenting some of my VHS or DVDrs that I would most like to replace with the real deal.
The Children
Crimewave *The current DVD out there is just sad
Dark Angel: The Ascent
Hospital Massacre *VHS recently deceased
The Invisible Maniac
The Legend of Billie Jean
Lunatics: A Love Story
The Lurking Fear
Midnight Offerings
New Year's Evil
Slaughter High
So Sad About Gloria
Sundown: Vampire in Retreat
This House Possessed

Phantasm 2 (region 1, damn Universal!!)
The Town That Dreaded Sundown
Lost Highway (again, damn you Universal!)
And everything else that has been mentioned already
Dark Secret of Harvest Home
The Stepfather
Strip Search (HBO original movie about torture that came out during the Abu Gharib scandal, and was buried by the cowards at HBO. It quite literally came out the week before the scandal hit and HBO showed it once and yanked it from the schedule)
And to parrot a few others that were previously mentioned:
Phantasm 2
Lost Highway (seriously, it's a FUCKING DAVID LYNCH MOVIE!)
Night of the Creeps
Scream for Help (I remember seeing this once on cable about twenty years ago, and would like to see it again)

Mark Of Cain (1985) - My old Vestron tape still lives but who knows for how long.
The Alchemist (1986) - A Charles Band flick still not available on DVD.
Necropolis (1987) - Used to watch this back-to-back with Neon Maniacs all the time.
Sole Survivor (1983) - Rumor has it that Code Red will release this next year *fingers crossed*
Hospital Massacre (1982) - Long, long overdue!
Terminal Choice (1985) - Another fun "Hospital Massacre" in need of release.
Night School (1981) - Gem of a slasher.
The Power (1984) and The Kindred (1987) - Two Stephen Carpenter/Jeffrey Obrow 'classics'. The Power actually made the box office top ten back in the days!
Next Of Kin (1982) - One of the best in horror to come out of New Zealand.

I could list some movies that are MIA - but at this point DVD has reached a point where the most fun is digging through titles I've never heard of and finding some great stuff. That's probably the most fun.
Anyway - horror of the 30's and 40's would be my choice, there are still a lot to go.
I will list:

ME TOO. I'd pay $50, at least, for a decent copy of that in region 1, widescreen, on DVD. Even without a trailer.
I also want that movie: Psychos in Love. And I would buy John McNaughton's The Borrower if it was released in widescreen from a reputable company. And I'm 90% sure I'd buy Night of the Creeps. Also, The Stepfather (what in the living fuck is keeping this from being released??). And I would buy Ghost Town (1988) if that came out from MGM or Anchor Bay.
Agreed Dave. If people are desperate for a title - why not import? If you're reluctant to import, I'd guess the film isn't really that important to you.
I've already outted myself as an obsessive, petty collector. So I'll just say: region 2 looks funny alongside my region 1 collection. Most of the movies on my list are movies I've never seen, either. So, they're: I'd buy them if they came out. But they still should freakin' be out already.
There's no excuse not to be region free.
No excuse whatsoever.
Except that the DVD companies in North America still refuse to make most of their titles region-0 all-region. Plus- I don't have the money to go out and buy a new DVD player if I finally have a good region-1 only player that almost never skips or freezes on all my discs. Yeah you can get a Cyberhome player cheap. But guess what? They skip and freeze on almost every disc you put in them. Including the region 2 or 3 or 4 disc ya just bought.

You can get very good region free dvd players for less than 200$.
There are hacks for most of them circulating on the net.
Some R1 titles look very funny when you compare their transfers with the same releases in R2.
If you are a real fan of a film, for that film alone you should already be region free. No excuse, really.

Cyberhome players are cheaply built players though, prone to numerous problems. You can get a good (and affordable) Philips player at almost any department store and enter a simple code to easily and fully be region free.

That's kind of my stance. I'm region free but the only thing I own is the Phantasm sphere. There are movies right now that are only available outside of R1 but it's only a matter of time before they come here as well. I can hold off until then. In the meantime, there's still plenty of R1 titles that I still haven't bought.

That's fair enough. But if there are titles you do want - and they're out elsewhere - why not get them? If you don't care enough to bother, fair enough. But listing films you're eager for, when they're out elsewhere, seems a tad strange.
Again, there is no excuse. If you don't care, that's fine. But to say price is a consideration is just silly considering how many affordable region free players there are.
If you can afford the DVDs, you can afford the player.

Well it ain't cheap to import DVDs. Shipping can end up costing more than a single DVD. I may give Shock 'Em Dead a spin if I can get it for less than $10, but shipping alone discounts that idea.
Normally I just import stuff that simply will not wash up on our shores, stuff like the original color timing for Oldboy which isn't even available in Korea anymore.
I'd say in a majority of cases, it's best just to wait.

I'm region free, and I never order outside of R1. Some of my R2 movies (like Anchor Bay's Hellraiser Box Set) skip to hell in back in the video, but the audio is ok. Yet, I watch What Have They Done to Your Daughters and Eyeball and there's no video skips at all.
Its weird, I've had 2 DVD players and they both do the same exact things with those certain DVDs. I don't want to put more money down importing a flick then turn around have it have flickery video you know? Anyone know if theres any hacks for the Xbox 360 to go region free?

This is why I don't buy many DVDs from overseas. I got Harry and The Hendersons for $19 through Amazon.co.uk. Two months later, it came out in R1 and was $10. It pays to wait in my opinion, unless you really think you need it.

Ahhh, I've had the same problem my friend. Some companies like Anchor Bay UK sometimes use a NTSC master for a PAL release. They are too cheap to make a new PAL master so they use the NTSC one. The difference in frame rates is what causes the skips or hiccups. Sometimes they aren't too bad but other times can be really annoying. Most ABUK movies that were released after their US counterparts have this problem.
Phantasm is an example of one of the titles that does not use an NTSC master, it was released in the UK long before the ABUS disc. A good way to tell if an R2 disc is a NTSC to PAL conversion is to look at the runtime, it will be the same as the R1 disc. The will be no 4% speedup(or shorter runtime) . I use IMDB as a source to check runtimes before I buy an import.
I guess you take a chance with anything you buy. I think I'll start a thread on this issue of NTSC->PAL Discs.

I had a Philips DVP642 for about three years before giving it to my brother, which was a region-free player. I now have a Philips DVP5140. Got it for about $70 at Best Buy. It too goes region-free. You have to hack it, though. It's very simple. You can find how to do it just about everywhere online and it is a very good player. No skips, no jumps, proper PAL-NTSC transfer, everything. I've been quite satisfied.
There really is no excuse not to be region-free. Hell, you can download a program that will enable any DVD to play on your DVD-ROM drive. (I, personally used DVDX Player 3.0 Professional). You can download it on just about any torrent site. It's quite simple.
