Didn't this movie get a decent R1 release in recent times?

Anyway, it's simply superb. A real fun movie. Nothing deep and meaningful, just dumb action with plenty of arterial blood flow. Perfect!

that Vipco release is uncut, but looks terrible compared to the new R1 release from AnimEigo. make sure you get the new version.

First off Shogun Assassin is a compilation of the first two Lone Wolf films: Sword of Vengeance and Baby Cart at the River Styx. You really should watch the original films rather than this.

Secondly like RealFear said the picture quality of the Lone Wolf films in the UK are appalling. They look like they were copied from a third generation VHS, buried underground for a few years and then transfered onto DVD.

If you enjoy any of the Lone Wolf and Cub films, I really recommend getting both the Japanese versions and Shogun Assassin. The Shogun Assassin cut is really quite entertaining and the American Dub is really good. They added narration by the "Cub" part of the team and it is very amusing. And the American cut doesn't trim out the violence so much as keep it coming fast. Instead, Shogun Assasin has a bit less of the political intrigue in the plot.

The R1 releases look great, although there appears to be, either some bad cropping on the sides of the frame in the later Japanese movies or the shots are just not composed as well.

I love these films and would highly recommend them. If you think they might be interesting, then you will most likely enjoy them.
