Fango recently caught up with writer/producer Daniel Farrands, who has most recently won notice as co-scripter of the Jack Ketchum adaptation THE GIRL NEXT DOOR. However, as any self-respecting horror buff will know, Ferrands got his breakthrough penning the screenplay for the much-troubled sequel HALLOWEEN: THE CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS (pictured), 1995’s sixth installment in the long-running slasher series. The good news, Farrands reveals, is that the alternate “producer’s cut” of the much-criticized follow-up may finally see the (legal) light of day after a decade’s worth of bootleg trading.

“It’s going to be the subject of a conference call that I’m having with Miramax,” the writer tells Fango. “I’ve finally gotten somebody’s attention over there. I have been in touch with them over the years, and during the past month I’ve had e-mail exchanges with everyone from their home video marketing people to their legal affairs department. The long but sad answer is that first, no one could figure out who had the rights. The movies Dimension made at the time when they were funded by Disney have reverted back to Disney, so they own the sixth, seventh and eighth HALLOWEENs, and the Weinsteins no longer have the rights. But not only did Disney not know they had them, they did a cost analysis [once they were informed], looked at it and said, ‘We don’t think it will make any money.’

“I told them everyone who had bought a bootleg would go back out and buy [an official release],” Farrands continues. “We could do a two-disc version with the producer’s cut and the theatrical version, commentaries, behind-the-scenes and everything. They said no, and I said, ‘Well, could you license it to a company such as Anchor Bay? They have done a wonderful job with the series.’ But they said no again, and that was because they didn’t want it competing with the bare-bones version they had in the marketplace.

“However, that DVD is now out of print. So I sent them dozens and dozens of websites and eBay pages, and I finally got their attention. So we are now going to have a discussion about it, and I hope I can convince them do something.”

Currently, Farrands is undertaking producer duties on the based-on-a-true-story chiller THE HAUNTING IN CONNETICUT, which reteams THE PROPHECY stars Virginia Madsen and Elias Koteas (see previous report here). “It is the about a very frightening battle between good and evil,” Farrands says of the just-wrapped feature. “Virginia Madsen is amazing in this film, and I love her. We had a hard-working crew and a good cast, and everyone gave it their all. It’s going to be a scary and hopefully very entertaining, spine-tingling movie. In a similar fashion to AMITYVILLE, we optioned the rights to the [real] family’s story, but it’s not a documentary of the actual case—it’s a Hollywood movie.” —Calum Waddell

Wow, Weinstein's don't own Halloween 6 - 8 anymore. Interesting. I think Disney should do a 2 disc release of 6 and a SE of H20, both films are in desperate needs of a re-release.

I've never seen the producer's cut and the version I did see confused me. So A longer more understanding version sounds good to me.

I'd definitely pick up a legitimate copy if I had the chance. The Producer's Cut is far superior to the theatrical.

The producer's cut is pretty interesting, but I missed the gore in the theatrical version.

If some type of hybrid PC/Uncut version were to be created, I'd probably double-dip on this title.

This just goes to show how little studios know their own properties. They were afraid it would compete with something out of production? How can they possibly do a cost analysis if they don't even know what is or isn't out on DVD? Did someone from marketing just walk onto the street and ask the first person, "Would you buy a 'Producer's Cut' of a Halloween movie?"

You see? You see? Your stupid minds! Stupid! Stupid!

And hell yes I'd buy it.

I can only assume that when they first did the cost analysis/whatever it had been a while ago, maybe several years ago, back when it was still in print and that this is an updated attempt to get the Producer's Cut released now that the theatrical cut DVD is OOP. It's a combination of old news and new news that is easy to get confused by.

I think the PC is great. Like it was mentioned in this thread, theres a lack of gore. However, if you can deal with the whole Thorn cult issue, it's quite an interesting sequel. Now if you hated the whole Thorn storyline, then I don't recommend it. I have some clips from this version on my Deleted Horror scenes site (though the actual film has over 40 minutes of alternate footage).

I don't mind the lack of gore. I've seen both cuts, and I didn't even notice. Anyways, the original film didn't have any of the red stuff either, so the lack thereof isn't a deal breaker for me. Gore isn't an essential component of Halloween. If this were F13 then it'd be a different story.

I've never seen this cut, but I'm excited that there's a chance it is finally getting officially released.

The theatrical version is one of my guilty pleasures. I'd love to see an official release with both cuts.

I've held out on buying part 6 hoping that there would be a legitamate release of the PC. I sure hope something happens of this, especially a 2-disc.

I didn't mind the Thorn part but then a lot of the theatrical version seemed like a lot of themes and plots were running together and all over the place all at once. Again, it seemed rather confusing to me. The gore would be nice to have even if it's not in the producer's cut (maybe it can be reinserted) but a definitive 2 disker with both versions would be real nice to own. Not to mention suped up versions of the continuing 2 sequels.

The PC makes more sense than the TC, that's for damn sure! There is a hybrid TV cut that appears on AMC that uses footage from both, and for the most part, it actually works until the end, which it uses the TC and just makes absolutely no sense at all.

I think you'd dig the PC cut. It's also a fitting end to the "middle trilogy" of the Halloween series.

Count me in for a double-dip! I have the PC and it's pretty difficult to see some of the footage--a cleaned-up version will certainly get my cash.

I hope these idiots get a gander at our comments.... :)

If they wanted to go so far as to release a boxset of 6, H2O and Resurrection as SEs, I'd definitely pick that up...no question.

What I want is a special edition of Halloween II from UniversaL, complete with the theatrical and television versions. (Or maybe Rosenthal's original version.) I'm sure Rosenthal would be willing to do a commentary for the film. I could honestly care less about anything past part II (with part III being a guilty pleasure.)

I'd love to see that too. But with Universal, I don't have much hope...

There is a R2 DVD that does have a commentary, but it's currently OOP.

Just another example of how major studios have their heads up their asses. I'd buy a new SE of H6, and SE dvds of Halloween II and III would be most welcome.
