View Full Version : Blood Harvest (1987) DVD cut??
Anyone know what and how much is cut? From what I can find it seems like some of the full frontal was cut or something. Is there a difference between the retromedia release to others, the retro release says its directors cut, but even this is supposedly cut up?

I did hear that some of the DVD release had some cuts - here's a qoute from an email I received from a pretty reputable horror buff..
"The DVD is missing enough gore to make it noticable. In email communications that I had with director Bill Rebane, he stated that he thought it was too bloody (he was running for Governor of Wisconson at the time!), so he edited nearly every gore shot by a few seconds."

This movie is about to finally get a legit R1 release (and hopefully uncut) in April as part of this set that is now up for pre-order...

Sounds good if it's anamorphic and uncut. The two other films listed in the set aren't too grand, but oh well...

I've been wanting to see it for a while, so for only $13.49 (plus two other movies), I'm definitely pre-ordering it soon. :D
SON OF A! I had just ordered the blood harvest retromedia dvd. :eek2:

Heh, I got that one last year for about $2 on half.com - brand new. So far, all the flicks released by Crypt of Terror have not been the greatest quality so we'll see how good this one is.

Well judging by the quality of the one I purchased I hope its better and uncut because I would give this copy away a buy again.

Did this even come out? It seems like it's been backordered everywhere since the release date.

Was this one uncut? I have the retromedia one as well and I remember seeing it on Showtime when I was younger and it having a lot more nudity in it.

According to a review on Amazon, Retromedia's Blood Harvest is cut but the cuts don't sound too major to me. Here's what he said:
This is edited in several places, including these two key scenes: first of all, in the famous shower scene, Jill gets forced out of the shower when a "mysterious stranger" turns off the cold water. In my recorded-from-cable VHS version, an additional short scene shows Jill not only jump out, but grab a towel and flash a brief, but lovely, full frontal - and if you're familiar with the movie, you know that the actess playing the character Jill is especially gorgeous.
That's gone from the DVD. It shows the brief, unrevealing dash from the shower, then cut to Jill wearing a robe in the kitchen.
The scene of Jill's friend hung upside down in the barn, stripped to lingerie: the unedited scene where the girl's throat is slit, followed by a brief-but-gory squirting blood shot, is gone entirely from the DVD. Only a brief flash of the dead girl is shone.
I think every gore/nude scene has been edited in some way.
I think the Brentwood PSYCHOTIC TENDENCIES pack has the uncut version under its alternate title NIGHTMARE. I'm not positive its uncut but since Brentwood sources a lot of their material from VHS chances are good that it is since the VHS is uncut.
The Retromedia version is out of print, but I've upped the full DVD over at Cinemageddon for those interested. Its a great cheezy classic - nothing beats Tiny Tim trying to sound creepy by singing in his weird "Tiptoe Through The Tulips" voice.

So does anyone know if the Crypt Of Terror:Collection Of Nightmares set has Blood Harvest uncut? The rear side of the case on DVD Empire shows it as being an unrated 90- minute cut,but as most of us know,a listed rating is not always 100%accurate.I briefly owned the Psychopathic Tendencies set in hopes of the same thing,(VHS source being uncut) but it has still been sliced to Hell,as far as I can tell.
Too bad Rebane wants to tamper with his own moderately-established cult classic in fear of being ostracized by those who will likely never see it anyway. He skimmed off exactly the ingredients that make gratuitous trash like this fun for all, while offering special features to a disc no one wants .

I own both sets, and seem to recall the running time being the same for Blood Harvest in both sets, but I can check...

Okay, I've checked the running times on both sets and here's the results:
Blood Harvest in the "Psychotic Tendencies" set has a running time of 1:24:18
Blood Harvest in the "Crypt of Terror: A Collection of Nightmares " set has a running time of 1:27:24
So, it would seem that the one in "Psychotic Tendencies" is cut. It also looks like it was sourced directly from an old VHS tape as the A/V quality is rather poor. The transfer in the "Crypt of Terror" set is 16x9 enhanced widescreen and looks somewhat better...but still a little blurry.

Eek!! What? Blood Harvest was released in 16x9 and I missed it? I just ordered a copy of the "Crypt of Terror: A Collection of Nightmares" set from Ebay. Thanks for the info!! I'm ashamed of myself. How are the other 2 movies?

Just don't expect the greatest transfer. The other movies (actually three) are okay, and two are directed by Jose Ramón Larraz.

I'll appreciate any improvements on this one! I've been blessed with the original "Congress Video" vhs since around 93 when I stumbled onto a copy in K-Mart's mysterious bargain bin. Bought it blind, fell head over heels.
The film originally starts with Tiny Tim singing "Gary & Jill" followed by a shot(s?) of Jill's dad hung upside down in a barn and getting his throat slashed over a tin bucket. Is this how the "Crypt of Terror" release opens?
I also own the Retromedia dvd release. Which improves on the video a little bit, and eliminates the hollow, tin canny sound the tape had. But it crudely chops up the original opening sequence with a cheesy computer job that plays to the "Marvelous Mervo at your Service" song (which is the end credits song). It completely eliminates Jill's Dad's demise, and changes the title to "Nightmare"...very irritating! But once that opening mostrosity is over, it plays uncut with all the full frontal, etc. And I do like the supplement covering the "Making Of" so I always kept that disc.
I ignored the "Psychotic Tendencies" set because it sounded like a Retromedia rehash. But this new BCI version sounds like a gem!!

I received the "Crypt of Terror" set today. My memory was a little off on the opening (it's been years), but this BCI version shows it the way it should be!! Though, there is some extra text along with "Blood Harvest" on the title screen. And the film is the complete "Congress Video" version!! The transfer was better than expected, the best there's been! A hidden treasure I wouldn't have found without Katatonia's last post, thanks!!
Now I'll have to check out the other movies in the set.
