View Full Version : Flat panel vs. rear projection LCD TVs?

So I think I'm finally going to make the jump and upgrade from my regular old 27" CRT TV. I was starting to look at 42" flat panel LCD TVs around $1200, but then a friend mentioned that he was selling his 2-year old Sony KDFE55A20 55" LCD Rear Projection TV for $1200. Anybody have any opinions or advice on my situation?

I bought a Panasonic Plasma 50" - TH-50PH9UK, and I'm in love with it. You need a surround system to go with it because there's no speakers, but being an audiophile as well that wasn't a problem for me :D

C'mon, nobody's got an opinion on getting a new 42" flat panel LCD versus getting a used 55" rear projection LCD?!
I'm so indecisive, plus somebody here has got to know a lot more about this stuff than I do.

I'm not a big fan of the rear projection TV, so I'd say go with the flat screen LCD (I've got a 52" LCD). Most RPTVs I've seen look very murky when watching from any kind of angle. I don't know how much you're willing to spend, but you can get a probably get a nice 52" LCD TV for under $3k if you think the 42" is too small. Or some 46" LCDs are available for under $2k.
