March 31: New FRIDAY THE 13TH documentary coming
Fango has learned from producer Anthony Masi that FRIDAY THE 13TH creator Sean Cunningham has thrown his full support behind an all-encompassing documentary on the film series, which Masi is currently putting together with Thommy Hutson. Masi, who produced the similar HALLOWEEN: 25 YEARS OF TERROR and, with Hutson, is piloting the fortunes of several genre films including PRANK and NEMESIS, tells FANGORIA that this project, for which a trailer has already been cut, will be “a retrospective much like [his earlier docu] HALLOWEEN: 25 YEARS OF TERROR. But it’s going to be done differently.”
“With HALLOWEEN, the making of the movies was often more interesting than the movies themselves,” Hutson adds. “But that wasn’t the case with the FRIDAY THE 13TH films. Those productions were very cookie-cutter; they came out with seven of them in eight years. It was a formula. But with the remake of the first film about to go into production, all of a sudden there’s a renewed interest in the series.”
Masi adds that, rather than a straightforward behind-the-scenes recounting, the docu will “talk about things like body count, gore and the concept of Jason as a superhero. There will also be more of a narrative flow to it. We don’t want it to end up being just a bunch of talking heads.” An official start date has yet to be announced; keep your eyes here for updates. —Marc Shapiro

Sounds good. I'm down as the extras in the boxset are rather lacking.

 Is he serious? Why the ned to take a swipe at another franchise? I enjoy the Friday films, but to pretend they're not formulaic with some bizarre stupidity thrown in is pushing it a bit. :D

Actually I think they plan on showing alternate / deleted footage. I was reading on a F13 board that the producer sent out an email looking for any and all kinds of footage relating to F13 (be it TV appearances to cut footage from the movies). I sent an email to the person earlier today about providing some footage, hopefully I hear back from him.

Now that I'm thinking about it, here's a copy of that email, in case some of you guys may have something to contribute:

Hi everyone,
My name is Anthony Masi and I am producing a retrospective documentary on the entire series of Friday films... I didn't realize the Friday message board has been gone for a year! I found the page with all of the "goodbye" messages (http://f13forumgoodbye.blogspot.com/...bye-folks.html), and since I can't post a message on the board I figured I would email all of you directly.
I am working with Anchor Bay Entertainment and I am in need of the following things, and would be grateful if any of you have anything to share:
- Rare photos (On-set, personal, magazine, all are OK)
- Rare television clips (There are many great videos of Jason on Arsenio Hall, The Simpsons, South Park, etc. on YouTube, but I am wondering if anyone has a VHS tape or DVD with this footage on it... this stuff is golden for us at the moment so if anyone has anything, please let me know!)
- Rare movie footage (On-set, alternate takes/endings, test screenings, anything really)
- Collectors (If you are a massive Friday collector, please let me know, would love to interview you and/or show your collection)
- Anything else that you think would make for good visuals in a retrospective documentary.
Please contact me via email or at the numbers below.
Thank you!

If there's anyone who understands there is no rest for the wicked, it's producer Anthony Masi and the team behind the upcoming Friday the 13th documentary His Name Was Jason. Masi, co-producer Thommy Hutson and director Daniel Farrands have just banked 70 interviews for their 90-minute look at the entire franchise presided over by Jason Voorhees.
"It sounds funny, but it's the truth - we had 13 weeks to pull all of this together," Masi says incredulously. Interviews with cast, crew, industry reps and fans (ShockTillYouDrop.com included) took place in New York and Los Angeles over the last two weeks. Moreover, they are still going. Masi and company are gearing up to some of the key players behind Platinum Dunes' Friday the 13th.
Masi - who produced Halloween: 25 Years of Terror in 2006 - sees that as a perfect capper to their documentary. "Unlike H25, this one will have the ending that I didn't have. I really wanted to end that with the new movie, a passing of the torch. For this, it looks like we're going to get the new cast, and we may have our ending. A look at the series and looking ahead."
Jason will feature most of the men who have embodied Voorhees over the years including Ari Lehman, C.J. Graham and, of course, Kane Hodder, Masi's personal fave. Ken Kirzinger is coming close to being involved. Then there are those who have died by Voorhees' hand. "Bonnie Hellman, the one who squeezes the banana by the side of the road as she's getting killed [in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter] - she was hilarious. We interviewed her and did a gag where she's peeling bananas and answering questions. We're doing some silly things like that." Jason Lives helmer Tom McLoughlin and A New Beginning's Shavar Ross, Masi says, are other highlights.
This "epic" documentary will not only feature spoken recollections; Masi is excited to report his interviewees are bringing unseen items from the film to share. Friday the 13th: Part 3's FX artist Douglas White dragged into over 30 never-before-seen behind-the-scenes photos. "He just brought them in a box. Adam Marcus brought in an original Friday the 13th script with handwritten notes from 1980. We've got typed notes from Sean Cunningham to business associates, stuff that was going to be thrown out when they were clearing their office. He just held onto it. He brought in one of five boxes of original Variety ads and other insane stuff. "
"Marylin Poucher - she jumped out of the lake in Part 3 as Mrs. Voorhees - she brought in rare photos of the makeup application. These were just personal photos of hers," he continues. "We've got some alternate scenes I don't believe fans have seen."
Masi, Hutson and Farrands are working towards a mid-October deadline at which point they'll turn in their cut. Anchor Bay will release His Name Was Jason on DVD February 3, 2009 with three hours of bonus material; a debut on Starz follows on, you guessed it, February 13th
thsi sounds much better than that crappy (perhaps) new box set
