Yes this is an old one, but I found it to be a rather fun viewing. Even witty at times.

As most of us are rather well versed in 70's/80's horror, I think it is a great idea to go a bit further back in the timeline of horror history as some of you did. Not only I, but even my girlfriend grew up (separately) bringing slasher flicks to the likes of grade 8 birthday parties. I actually blindly rented Last House On The Left for a girl's 14th Birthday party as it was from the makers of F13th and Elm Street. Not realizing that this was inappropriately different than the makers outher outings. Ooops! Needless to say, given all of our similar interests, this film surprisingly impressed myself and my gf. So I am hoping it will do the same for all here. If not, then try watching a rape/revenge film with 14 year olds.:)

I don't know why, but everytime I've seen this DVD for sale for cheap, I've passed it up. I guess now is the time to finally pick it up!

This is a bit of a fun one; an overly familiar plot but with good execution and a nice twist at the end. The comedy scenes in this are simple enough and don't take away from the horror scenes. Movies like Doctor 'X' are really dragged down by their inane "comedy" sequences. My favorite parts of this were the banter between the English girl and the Sheikh.

The only thing I don't really like is Karloff's performance. When he's finally got the jewel, he's staring at it like an idiot for probably ten minutes, then he takes the scenic route back to his tomb before bowing again and again at the idol and then finally after an agonizing few minutes of him holding the jewel and staring at the idol he puts it in its hand. What's the deal with that? Creating suspense? Then it only takes a beat to see that the hand closes. Terrible timing. It only served to annoy the living hell outta me.

There's a lot of interesting history about this movie being considered lost, found in a Czech vault and then finally discovered uncut in a British one. I thought maybe I'd seen a documentary, but it's not on the DVD so I must have just seen screen shots of the Czech version online somehow.

Upon second viewing, I still liked it. Mainly, it started working for me about 20 minutes in once all the characters are introduced. I liked their back and forth banter. The horror element was good also. I think the way most will get around to watching it is for the fact that it is so cheap to own, let alone rent. It is a nice surprise if you have 80 minutes to kill. You just have to go into it bearing this is not an 80s slasher. I have yet to really jump into that era of films as I like them faster moving and more violent. Yes, Karloff is not amazing in it, ironically, the rest of the cast holds this movie to me.
