View Full Version : Synapse Films Preping Maniac Cop & The Image

Don May Jr. has finally opened up on his upcoming Blu-ray plans:Well, we have been quietly working on a few BLU titles already... we just didn't blast the public with the info using press releases for titles that have no release dates yet, because, well, we don't know when they'll be ready at this time.

I actually DO have a nice Blu-Ray of our MANIAC COP at home right now, sans menus, though... a beauty of a VC-1 encode with uncompressed PCM 5.1! You'll all get to experience it probably close to the beginning of 2009.

We're working on MANIAC COP, plus THE IMAGE (with a SMOKIN' brand-new HD transfer... we were even able to get rid of the green scratch during the cafe scene) as our first two BD titles.

More to come, obviously, if we actually succeed in making some money with those two. Probably STREET TRASH is the next candidate.http://www.avmaniacs.com/forums/showpost.php?p=593538&postcount=10

I'll be getting both and I'm psyched about what Don will bring to the table. Where as with Blue Underground I suspect we may end up with some DNR messes.

Well, he certainly won't be making any money from me on Maniac Cop, which is quite poor. But I guess he chose these two from his back catalog based on past sales (at least I hope he did!) so it's reasonable to assume they'll do okay.

Same here. Not a Maniac Cop fan. It was an ok film, but the standard DVD is all I want. No desire to double-dip that. Now Street Trash.....

now if synapse got the rights to maniac cop 2 and 3 and released a blu ray box set i would get it but i too will keep my standard synapse dvd and not double dip

I'm not too excited about Maniac Cop or The Image. Might pick up MC, but I doubt I'd buy The Image.

I'd love to see Evil Dead Trap. I think the old DVD has a non-anamorphic transfer, which would make the Blu-Ray a worthy upgrade.

I'd also like to see Lemora. The recent DVD was mastered in HD. Unfortunately, here's what DMJr had to say:

LEMORA "is" a good candidate but, every time I bring it up for BD, I see the huge grimace on my business partner's face... the title is beautiful and one of our favorites but... IT TANKED. Zero. Ziltch. Nada. Sales blew.

I bought Lemora because of the comments on this very board - boy did I ever learn a lesson.

Bad film. You know, I wonder what I did with it, because I've not see it in ages..... must be around here somewhere I guess.

More from Don:We have a couple HD transfers for things that NO ONE knows we are putting out yet... and, with those, we are looking into the possibility of releasing both DVD and BD on the same release date.

We'll see...

MANIAC COP wasn't really our first choice for BD, but the studio doing the project for us wanted something with a handful of extras and audio options just so they could put it together with their software/encoders, etc. and MANIAC COP fit the criteria. They wanted do do a "demo" with it for potential clients showing a few extra options available and using multiple sources. LEMORA "is" a good candidate but, every time I bring it up for BD, I see the huge grimace on my business partner's face... the title is beautiful and one of our favorites but... IT TANKED. Zero. Ziltch. Nada. Sales blew.
About being region free:That's not always a decision we can make. It's all up to the licensor and what our contracts state for any particular film. If we are allowed, our BDs will be region free when we can do it.

As a happy owner of Lemora I'm not the least bit surprised sales tanked. I'll be buying both of the announce titles. As for what I want most... Thriller: A Cruel Picture comes out on top, but I have to wonder if he even has HD distribution rights and if he doesn't I know for a fact that he'll never get it.

Triumph of the Will is reportedly Synapse Films' best selling title and was very recently remastered in HD. I would image that'll be an early contender, especially considering it's a public domain title so the only concern is licensing from the owners of the print they did the transfer from.

Now I feel REALLY bad. Lemora is one of those titles I meant to pick up but lets face it, I can't buy EVERYTHING I want. I borrowed a friend's copy not too long ago and watched it a second time with my wife. She loved it, so now I'll probably get it soon. That is, if it isn't too late. :(

Not that I am on the Blu-ray train or everything, but it is nice to see THE IMAGE getting some more love by Syanpse. As far as art-porn goes, it is one of the best.

I am just glad that this thread lead me to Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural, as I had somehow missed its existence until this thread and wow, what a beautiful, textured movie it is. I just rented it but will now be buying my own copy. Add +1 to the terrible DVD sales as I am officially hooked. I just finished and am about to just start it right back up again.
