Anchor Bay's PHANTASM OBLIVION doesn't street until August 26th, but we've got a quick first look until we're allowed to post the full review. Here's the short of it: compared to the Anchor Bay UK release, this new transfer beats it in terms of sharpness, framing and color timing. There's still the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix from the UK disc, but the DTS is missing, and most surprising of all, so too is the original stereo mix. In terms of extras, there's the same commentary from the previous release with Reggie, Don and Angus, as well as a 9-minute behind-the-scenes taken from the Phantasmagoria documentary, a trailer and an extended promo reel. The big plus here is the vastly improved picture, but the dropped audio and lack of new extras may turn off those content with the previous R2 release.

We'll give you more shortly when the full review can be posted, but for now, here's some screen caps:

The review will be up soon. It will compare the old MGM disc, the R2 disc and the new disc.

Sounds good, unlike the film itself.

I've had this disc for about a week. I threw it in for a few minutes to compare it with the print from the R2 Sphere set and without a doubt the detail is a lot crisper in the new release. However, the R2 disc is totally satisfactory for me. As a movie only ten years old it was never in the need of drastic remastering to begin with. Bottom line, if you don't own it, get it immediately (I'm one of the few people who thinks it's the second best movie of the series after the original). If you already own the R2, don't bother. If you only have the original MGM disc, then it's worth a purchase for the extras.

I didn't know Part 3 had a slip cover? I love the one for the first film.

I don't remember seeing it either. However, I do own the lenticular cover for the previous bare bones MGM release of Phantasm 4. It's really cool if you haven't seen it. Actually, when I upgrade, I plan on keeping it & using it as a slipcover for the newer one since the slipcover doesn't really mention any features.

Only the first film has a slip cover in the Anchor Bay Collection version. All the others are regular alpha cases only.

ah, I checked my III and it has NO slipcover. Thanks for confirming.
I think I'll pick up IV now, although I own the MGM R1 and AB R2, but I'm a Phan.

I own them both too, but the visual quality is a pretty big jump worthy of upgrading, if you ask me!

Mine should arrive any day now. 'Twas only $9 which isn't bad at all.

It's interesting to note that Anchor Bay USA almost always improves the transfers over Anchor Bay UK releases. Hmm...

Sometimes yes but in the olden days (before Starz bought them out and started releasing crap and ditching it's genre routes and the fans!) it worked the other way round as well, examples off the top of my head being their original Tenebrae and Madman releases and I'm sure quite a few other releases.

True it works both ways, but I mainly meant the more recent releases like Hellraiser and the Phantasm films.
