I'm surprised there's nothing on this yet. TWILIGHT looks pretty interesting, a sort of femme take on THE LOST BOYS, directed by the purveyor of indie teen angst, Catherine Hardwicke, of THIRTEEN, LORDS OF DOGTOWN and THE NATIVITY STORY fame. Kristen Stewart is probably my favorite of the neo-goth former child actor movement (which also includes Michelle Trachtenberg and Evan Rachel Wood); I liked her in PANIC ROOM and INTO THE WILD. Basically, new girl Stewart falls for jock extraordinaire who, and I quote the IMDb synopsis, "can run faster than a mountain lion". That's not all he can do though - he's a vamp, but nobody else knows his deadly secret.
At any rate, at least we look to be getting away from the sensationalism the vampire genre has been submerged in as of late thanks to the remnants of VAN HELSING and UNDERWORLD. Any step closer to MARTIN or even THE LOST BOYS is a welcome change.
It's just been announced TWILIGHT hits November 21. I'm game.

You know, even though there is obviously sub zero interest here for this one, I cannot help but notice how many other people I know that are just BURSTING to see this movie. I guess the books are pretty popular? I would be tempted to go pick them up, but nothing good can come from reading the source material so close to the movie dropping.
Although it has been quite awhile since I have enjoyed a good blood sucker story on account of them all being terrible of late, I guess I am in for this one if only to see what everyone is so hyped about.

We all know rhett is a 12-year-old girl trying to pretend she's a canadian pushing a lawnmower in his undies.
Even if the movie sucks, at least it features Kirsten Stewart. I think that's the main point Lorhetta was trying to make. ;)

my girlfriend got me onto these books about 2 weeks ago..i thought the trailer looked horrible and wasn't really wanting to read them..but..
they're actually pretty good. :eek1: I read the first book in about 4 days and i'm about 100 pages into the second one. Though watching the trailer again after reading the first book, I don't care for it.. we'll see though I guess..

So this just made 80083048 bajillion dollars opening day - those teenage girls are a real force to be reckoned with. And here a few months ago I was feeling sorry for the film's lack of exposure by posting a thread here on it. None of that. This will easily be the highest grossing horror film of the year (the $37 million opening day is already the second biggest in history for a non-sequel). I guess we can expect the move away now from torture porn to tween emo goth horror.
Emo vampire flick aim at teenage girls? erm.. no thanks. But it should make at least a few trillion dollars.

Gotta say, the movie doesn't appeal to me in the least, but I think rhett's right. This may very well be a turning point in horror from torture porn to emo goth horror.
Hell, apparently the book has already sold more copies than Harry FUCKIN' POTTER!

I did a double feature last night on the town:
Warren Miller's Children of Winter
Twilight
Children of Winter was another outstanding installment. One section focused on 3 skiers who sailed in Iceland and would raft out to mountains, hike, and then ski down. Incredible. There was a touching moment when one of the skiers let loose the ashes of his buddy, Billy Poole, who passed away last year while backcountry skiing.
Once that finished, it was on to Twilight, and holy smokes, this was bad stuff, guys. Instead of acting, the actors twitched. It was bizarre. They were obviously trying to emote and project what it felt like to be an awkward teen (although how awkward you can be when you are a cute, bunny-toothed girl and a guy who is the dream-star of every 12 year old girl escapes me), but they were either out of their depth, or were unable to cope with the vapid script. So, commence the twitching!
Edward: Hi, I'm Edward. [winces]
Bella: I know [twitch]
Edward: I was away [ducks]
Bella: I know [turns away]
Edward: Personal stuff [closes eyes, bites lip]
Bella: [twitch]
Edward: Here [pushes microscope over to her on table]
Bella: Thanks [accidentally touches his hand OMG TWITCH TWITCH TWITCH]
Edward: [TWITCH! WINCE!]
I was serious when I wrote that all the super-cute, heartfelt moments were part of montages that completely muted any dialogue. Empty. My gf, who is a big fan of the books, left the theater a little bummed. I mean, Edward was shiny and dreamy, so there was that, but the rest was dull and stilted.
The high note is the setting. Although I am biased by living in Seattle, the Pacific Northwest is a great setting for a vampire flick. When we were given wide shots of the outdoors, it made sense to couple this with Warren Miller. Lush. Otherwise, though? Big mistake.

See, that's why I think kids today should stop watching crap like this, and take a look at an ACCURATE portrayal of teenage youth, like Rebel Without a Cause. (Sure it was made in 1955, but is it still relevant today? Of course it is.) It deals with love, loss, awkwardness, conformity, and the confusion of "growing up". I know I may be a little biased here, but I think James Dean was one of the few people in movie history to successfully capture that essence of what it means to be a teenager, complete with the awkwardness and confusion that goes along with it.
From what I read in reviews, the whole movie (Twilight) tries to pass the guy's feelings off for Bella as "love", when it is merely lust, infatuation and nothing more, nothing less.

I will never understand why some some boys freak out so when there is a movie made of which they aren't the target audience.
As for me, I loved it to bits and will be ordering the books right away. At first, I was a bit put off by the vampire look but as the verse expounded it all worked for me and I enjoyed it so much more than I was expecting. The story was lovely and felt real to me, the kids were great, things were just quirky enough, and the actor playing Bella's father came thisclose to just stealing the whole movie from everyone. After I saw it, I immediately wanted to see it again, but when I went to buy a ticket for tonight they were all sold out for the next 454546654 showings so I got to wait.

I have no interest in seeing this movie. But I'm happy that a movie with "no sex, violence or stars" (http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/2nd-update-for-the-twilight-zone/) has become a hit.
I'd love to see Hollywood take more chances on horror movies that aren't defined by their graphic violence or big name stars.

I will admit that I was not the target audience. But how about Edward's "stink face"? That got a few laughs in the audience too.
Still, I hope you enjoy the books. My gf is a fan, as are several women I work with. Myers' in-between novel (not vampire related; this one is a sci-fi, alien love story), Host, was not met with as much enthusiasm, but sold a fair amount.

This whole Twilight has pretty much become a phenomenon over night it seems. Two weeks ago I've never even heard of it, and now everyone is talking about it. It's odd how vampires seems to come and go when it comes to the mainstream. Between Lost Boys in the 80's, Buffy in the 90's, and now Twilight, it seems that vampires are now the "it" thing again.
What's even more odd is that the vampire thing seems to get tamer as time goes on. :eek2:

they are all pretty good books, i saw the movie too. I was a pretty good adaptation of the book. Not perfect, some of acting was extremly laughable. but overall i give it 7/10

I swear until Friday I NEVER heard anything about this movie. I must have been out of the loop because not only did I not know about this film, I NEVER saw one single trailer.
Not knocking the movie or anybody that's a fan , but I had no idea of the apparent popularity of this flick.
$70 mil. is serious business. It made more than Quantum of Solace in its opening.

Since you're out of the age bracket Twilight is catering to (as am I) it isn't surprising you wouldn't have heard about it. I've noticed it being heavily hyped for a few months now at Walmart and youth oriented websites like myspace.

Just the mention of yet another vampire movie is enough to get me to cringe. The concept has been done, redone, dug up, staked, buried, dug up again, staked again, burnt, buried, mixed with shredded celluloid in mocking semblance of undead life and done again. Long ago has any attempt to put an original spin on the genre been abandoned, most writer/director's idea of original now means "don't know fuck all about any of the other vampire movies that have been made, so this is all original to me". At this point its like trying to get sap from a maple tree that the last generation has already resorted to shoving through a wood chipper trying to extract the few remaining drops.
But wait, its a vampire movie about pretty, alienated, angst driven teenagers? Damn, now *that* really pushes the genre envelope. Have to take back everything I said, and rush right out and see this brilliantly original take on the concept. Some Hollywood producer must have massive balls to green light this.

I'll stick to the South Park episode about this one.
I have a sinking feeling that after all the teeny-bopper craze, there is probably a half-decent movie to be seen here or at least a cute love story for those hopeless romantics out there. One day I will most likely see this movie and it's many sequels to follow. Not because I'm sold on the story, or because the lead actress is slightly attractive or because I believe the hype, but because, like the Harry Potter movies, I'll succumb to the social pressure that comes along with a sensation like this. If you don't see it, you are alienated at parties, your family can't relate to you and your friends start acting awkward around you because they don't want to spoil the movie for you but they want nothing more than to talk about it. You become a ghost that people will dismiss unless they can talk about fucking Twilight with you.

I don't necessarily disagree, but what about Let the Right One In?
Personally, I think I'll see this and I'll probably enjoy it. I have a free pass already, so why not go? I'm a hopeless romantic, so I guess I'm part of the target audience.
And although I somewhat agree that filmmakers using a well-worn formula should aspire to break new ground, it can't be denied that an old fashioned formula film is always a lot of fun if it's done well. We are horror fans. Our beloved genre relies on old ideas and conventions and is not exactly swarming with originality.

This is, ironically, exactly how the novel was set up. I don't even know how anyone can call this film a horror film, as there is nothing actually scary about it. Teenage/college girls love Twilight (70% of the chicks on my campus wouldn't stop talking about it), as well as some soccer moms and teenage boys (and a few gay men). Being none of the target audience (a single guy), I tried reading the first book but I couldn't get into it. Just boring and not my thing.
Harry Potter is aimed at all ages, and actually worth the hype. And Robert Pattinson (Edward) was a supporting character in the fourth HP film that was killed off. He did a better performance in that film than any of the previews I've seen of him in Twilight.
If I want some good vampire teenage angst, I've got the first three seasons of Buffy in my collection. No need to settle with a rip-off.

In truth, I saw this with the lady and it was passable pap. It moved along at a good clip, and like PROM NIGHT, the highlight was hearing all the teen girls and their moms in the packed audience just swoon over everything that Teen Beat pinup said. When he did his "speed run/climb" though, the effect made me laugh every time. It looked identical to the effect used on E.T., where the alien just moved on that dolly without ever bobbing his head. It was awesome. The whole episode, err, film, felt like something out of Smallville or any other teen suspense stuff from The WB.

I got dragged along to this.To say I'm not the target audience would be an understatement.I was probably the oldest person at the screening,I felt like Peter Ustinov at the end of LOGAN'S RUN (and my LOGAN'S RUN reference should be a tip off that I was WAY too old to blend in at this screening). That and my male genitalia.
Once I got past the boy band squeals of glee every time the vamp boy showed up the film was watchable,a harmless timekiller that is a tad light in the excitement department. The relationship between the hero and heroine is fine in a teeny sort of way.I can see why the guy appeals to teen girls,he's a young girls idea of sexy(truth be told he's damn near feminine). He has poofy hair,he's strong, has money, actually LISTENS to the girl, likes to spoon and WON'T actually have sex with her. He's the perfect date for the fearful tweener,a good looking, sensitive, super powered eunuch.Like a REAL boyfriend but without the unsightly mess.
Kristen Stewart is a promising actress and like I said,it's a harmless watch. As a teen romance it probably works well enough. As a horror film it's about as frightening as a commercial for Count Chocula. Then again ,what do I know ? I'm old and my idea of a vampire is Christopher Lee.Chris had red eyes and fangs,he wasn't exactly "dreamy".

This thread reminds me of one my all time favorite spews:
"You ever seen a vampire? No? Well first of all, they're not romatic. Its not like they're a bunch of fuckin' fags hoppin' around in rented formal wear and seducing everybody in sight with cheesy Euro-trash accents, all right? Forget whatever you've seen in the movies: they don't turn into bats, crosses don't work. Garlic? You wanna try garlic? You could stand there with garlic around your neck and one of these buggers will bend you fucking over and take a walk up your strada-chocolata while he's suckin' the blood outta your neck, all right?"
:lol::lol::lol:
In all honesty I had no idea what this movie was about and have maybe saw one trailer (which I already forgot completely). But the man gene inside knew I didn't want to see it, good to know that's still working. I guess that explains all the teen girls at the theater last night, I thought High School Musical 4 came out already.:p I almost snuck into Punisher (thanks to a cool fella at dvdprofiler I had passes for Bond), and my girl mentioned sneaking into Twillight. Thankfully we went to Bond like we were supposed to, although that new Punisher does speak to the man gene in it's native tounge!:D

I got around to seeing this one recently. I'm sort of digging that Vampire Diaries show that's on, so I figured I check this out.
I can't say I'd recommend it completely although I will give it credit for being what it is: An indulgent teenage fantasy. I mean that sincerely. I appreciate a story that can commit like this one does, but I realize most people wouldn't.
My criticisms would be the terrible made-for-TV effects (maybe since it was so popular they will be able to afford some decent effects for the sequels?) and the fucking terrible acting on the part of Robert Pattinson. Man he sucks. I think I could overlook the effects if this guy had at least done a decent job, but he shit the bed worse than Hayden did with Anakin Skywalker. Kristen Stewart was enjoyable though. A little over-acted but this is a teenage fantasy after all and I believed her.
As far as the sequels go, I'd give them a chance but I'm skeptical that they would be able to carry the charm this one had. I think the teenage fantasy can only last so long without over-staying it's welcome.
